My wife passed away unexpectedly at 39 just a few months ago. While going through some of her things, I found this song on one of her playlists. I vaguely remembered the original, but had never heard this version by Luke Evans. I cannot make it through without shedding tears, but I wouldn't change that for the world. This hauntingly beautiful rendition is the song of my broken heart to her as it tries to mend. It captures the intimate memories shared with my beloved wife, almost as if I am reliving them, if even for a brief moment, every time I listen. I frequently find myself putting it on repeat and just savoring the memories. For that, I am ever grateful that Luke Evans recorded this. Thank you, sir.

It happened 21 years ago. We saw each other in a club. We were both in our early 20's. We were dating for about 2 weeks. We both wanted more but there was one problem though, his religion prohibited him from being gay. We ended the relationship but kept the friendship alive. He went on and got married. His wife knew about our past but she accepted the fact that we closed that book. I was his best man on their wedding and became the godfather to both their wonderful children. Fast forward 21 years on. I woke up to a call from her that he suffered a heart attack. Two days after we were all at his bedside as he sadly passed away. He was the love of my life that I never had but the best friend that I always had.

Have you ever heard the original version by Roberta Flack? His version gains from the video of him singing. Roberta was unseen, but her amazing voice alone projected the emotion, love, and infatuation of the song. Clint Eastwood seldom gets the credit for changin a so-so song into a legacy song. He had her slow the song down, and give it the characteristics I listed previously.

My beloved soulmate, my best friend, my wife, my Irene, passed away from cancer this past Feb at the age of 50. This song kills me. I cry so hard. I just discovered it a month ago. I try to listen to it every day. I love her so much. She loved me more and harder. I will never be loved like that again. We started dating when I was 18 and she was 17. Married 9 years later. 34 years together. We grew up together. Built an amazing life together. Raised 6 children. 3 biological and three of my nieces who we call daughters. We had such wondrous plans for the future and then she was stolen from me. Friends said they could see the love we had for each other every time they looked at us. They said we were writing the greatest love story ever told. Then it was over. I am left to carry on and build something from the ashes of eternal grief. A number of years ago, I saw the video of K D Lang's performance of "Hallelujah" and I wrote this about it: "No one in the USA will ever out-perform Whitney Houston's "Star Spangled Banner" and no one IN THE WORLD will ever sing "Hallelujah" better than that performance by K D Lang. " That was the last time I was really blown away by anyone...until this. I don't have a special man in my life, yet this rendition brought tears to my eyes....I could "FEEL" the song! Once again thinking that you couldn't beat the original and then, WHAM! You're an amazing talent, Mr. Evans! Now I have a special man in my world :)

Growing up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Roberta Flack will always be my favorite version of this song. She was an original, one of a kind. She made you feel every emotion that the song was meant to do. And then "The closer i get to you" brings back wonderful high school memories and Valerie. Our favorite song to each other at the time. I keep my truck radio on 70s music most of the time.
