Great review! I'm sort of perplexed by so many people that consider the pump type such an issue. If you want a Rotary pump because you want to plumb in your machine than I suppose I understand but, there is no difference in cup quality! I have used and owned both Vibration and Rotary pump machines and the espresso is awesome in both! The pressure seems to be a bit more consistent with Rotary pumps but with a public so enamored with Flow Control and varying pump pressures, I can't see the very small pulse of pressure from a Vibration pump of any issue. Rotary pumps are a bit quieter but Vibration pumps are getting less noisy all the time. So, really the largest reason I could see needing a rotary pump is if you are gonna plumb in the machine or expect to use it for A LOT of drinks a day! That's why Commercial machines use them, they can handle high volume! By the way, I am the happy owner of the Pro 600. As I said before, I have owned machines with both styles of pump and really they all made the same great shots as long as you had great puck prep and good grinder!

I've had my Pro 600 for over 4 years now, and it hasn't missed a beat. Fantastic build quality, espresso tastes great and plenty of steaming power (up to 2 bar steam). I'm actually a fan of the vibe pump as it gives a slower ramp than a rotary, so it is a bit more forgiving as it doesn't blast your puck with the full 9 bar instantly, and if they fail, they are very cheap to replace (~£15). Definitely would recommend Profitec to anyone wanting a good quality home espresso machine.

Hi friend, 3 problem-free years now with my 600 w/ flow control, reliably averaging 2 shots a day (so wow… 2k+ shots pulled). Not a single bug in the water 😂 Flow control knob at full close still lets some water drip out, which turns out makes for a simple pre-infusion routine. Start the first 10s of the shot with valve closed, and then open, you’ll have a brighter more complex shot. WLL sells an in-tank filter, and with the ECM naked portafilter I’ve had nothing but reliable performance. My only regret is not getting a 700 and plumbing it!

My main issue with the Profitec is more of an issue with the E61 group head. I recently upgraded from a 16 year old Expobar Office Leva heat exchange machine and decided to pay the extra for the LaMarzocco Linea Micra. I dislike immensely that the heat isn’t stable enough for perfect repeatable consist cups throughout the morning/afternoon. Nothing like the temperature drifting slightly from the boiler to the group head and making a noticeable flavor impact on my second cup of coffee 40 minutes later. Now on the flip side you have the repairability if you know what you are doing to make it last and last and last so give and take I suppose. Great video.

I’m with you. The E61 is not my ideal group, and lacks a lot of the stability of the saturated style groups in LMs. But I think in a lot ways the reason is a lot of manufacturers don’t modify or adjust the 61 year old group design to save in parts and cost, as well as keeping the machine a little more affordable on the retail side. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and for watching.

Question for those that own the 600. I'm torn between the Pro 600 and the new Drive (the 700s replacement). I will never plumb it in so don't need that, however with all of the new features on the Drive it seems to be an "end game" machine. Something I'll never want to upgrade from. I know never say never. The question is will I get the extra $1000 of use out of the Drive to justify it? The 600 seems to have everything it does minus the auto pre infusion and a few other tiny things. With the flow control added I can do a manual pre infusion on the 600 I guess. The steam pressure is the same on both machines just a smaller boiler on the 600. It's just me and maybe 2-3 more from time to time and I'm slow so I don't see myself running out of pressure on the 600. I think I'm answering my own question and if I go with the 600 I'll have more left over to get a Ceado E37SD to replace my faithful Mazzer Mini doeserless modded.

Most e61 DB machines are quite similar. In old days, benefit of rotary pump was providing consist pressure. I used to have one E61 DB machine with vibration pump. My experience with this machine was not good, namely inconsistent. However, the flow control system may improve the issue. To me, it is more worthy to have your grinder upgrade. Unless you upgrade your espresso machine to something like Slayer, KVDW, GS3 (basically different group head technology)… Otherwise the different between E61 DB machines are not significant, even no different.

You’re pretty much on the money, the more you spend the more functionality you get. I have grown used to a machine being equipped with a Smart Espresso Profiler which I find useful when dialing in a pre-infusion pressure and grind size.

@@TomJones-tx7pb I'm not sure you're getting how an E61 group works. It's just a continuous system. The pressure gauge you read on the machine is pressure at the pump, the gauge installed with flow control is pressure at the group head. I will almost always default to the Bianca V3. It’s such a pleasure to use, it looks great in the white or black finishes, it has a lot of programming options and most importantly a vibration pump. My Bianca is actually my daily kitchen machine. Paired with the Mignon Libra it’s a perfect kitchen combo. The only kicker is it’s at least $1,000 more, at least here in the states, than the PP600.

@sprometheus thank u sir. I'm more than willing to spend the extra $1K for the extra features and rotary pump. Funny enough I was also eyeing the Libra to with it. Seems like I was on the right track to greatness! Again, I appreciate your response. You're my fav coffee reviewer/enthusiast. Stay caffeinated, ponyboy.. lol!😂

What’s the difference between ECM and Profitec?

I sensed more passion about the AeroPress than the machine you were reviewing. Nothing wrong with an E61 machine review, but I hope you can find topics that are more fun for you to explore.

Am I unreasonable in thinking a vibration pump doesnt belong in a $2400 machine?

Otherwise it would be 3k. So still a good price. And nothing against vibration pumps.

I have a pro 500 and agree about the lack of tank cover - I frequently have to rinse it out. Walls of the tank get slimy otherwise.

Can anybody confirm if the Profitec 600 produces better froth milk than the Profitec 500 for cappuccinos?

For the price point that vibration pump is a foul for me
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get that. Moving to the 700 which had a rotary takes it up to Bianca V3 range and that for me is best E61 bang for your buck out there.

@@Sprometheus I agree, especially because you don't have to upgrade anything, flow control already build in etc

Hi Spro, I have a question regarding the temperature control, when I was researching for an espresso machine I noticed that Profitec tended to let you adjust the tank temperature but not the brew temperature so you had to go the manual and make converisons of "120C is 98C while brewing" and that sucked for me. Is that still the case for the 600? Thanks
@aureliocastro6478 Жыл бұрын
Hey in the pro 600 you can adjust both boilers independently
@hokie85ee Жыл бұрын
I think you are referring to the conversion needed for most PID Heat Exchanger machines - like the Profitec's. Some Bezzera PID machines I've read have the brew temp adjustment estimate built into the what the PID displays, e.g. the Aria. This is a concern for me as well when trying to decide to upgrade from a Lelit Glenda PID to either HX or DB. I don't want my PID display to not show the actual brew temp that I'm so used to on my Lelit.
@pspfreedom Жыл бұрын
@@hokie85ee that is exactly what I mean, and I was hoping for that to be mentioned during the review :(
@hokie85ee Жыл бұрын
@@pspfreedom since this is not an HX machine it doesn't have this concern/issue. You set the brew temp just like a single boiler machine...and the steam boiler temp....I suppose the display alternates back and forth?
@lowfuel6089 Жыл бұрын
Genuine general question: why have a bigger steam boiler than brew boiler? I would think the amount of water used to steam milk is a fraction of the water needed to pull shots.
@chrisdturner Жыл бұрын
A bigger steam boiler will lose pressure less quickly than a large one as you seem

Great review! I'm looking to move to the next step beyond the Gaggia Classic. I know I can do the mods, but also looking for better capacity boilers so shot temp and pressure stays more consistent. Ideally want stable temps with PID, even if not adjustable at least stays consistent, stable steam pressure, ability to pre-infuse, stable 9 bar pressure, adjustable would be nice but not required. would like to stay under $2k, any recommendations? I'm kind of doing the hacks/work arounds with the Gaggia by timing the switches and lights, etc. but not very consistent.

I just upgraded to the Profitec Pro 500 from the Gaggia Classic and I’m loving it so far. If you do decide to make the jump, I can assure you, you won’t regret it :) If however you don’t upgrade, atleast get yourself a PID on the GCP - it’s a game changer
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
Thank you, and the Gaggia is a great machine but definitely requires temp surfing and lots of patience. As the other comment said the Breville Dual Boiler is a popular option that does what you mentioned. You can also look at the Rocket Appartamento or ECM Classika which are in the $2k range and solid machines.
@noControl556 Жыл бұрын
To be fair you can't totally seal the water tank as it needs to vent to prevent vacuum lock, but I agree that way too open and should be some sort of vent line ideally with a basic air filter.
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
That’s true, not like air tight. But most machines have a least a cap or something that blocks most of the possible contaminants.

Very will made machine, but E61 for SD/DB PID machines has no logic whatsoever.. Best for these machines is a brew boiler sitting above the group.

This makes me feel really good about my Expobar Brewtus 4 which cost me €600 secondhand, and has all the same functionality as this, including easily adjustable OPV and PID, but has an even bigger brew boiler and thus better temp stability and performance. Both great machines, for me it is endgame. Only possible upgrade is the flow control kit 🥹
@AL-gi5xj3 ай бұрын
I am still considering the Expobar, even though everyone trashes it as a cheap Spanish machine. How long have you had it?
@emmanuelvanderschelden94742 ай бұрын
@@AL-gi5xj not that long, like 1,5 year ago I bought it second hand. It is a no frills machine, built like a tank with thick metal all around, and it serves me right so far. It is much cheaper than comparable machines, so it does cut some corners. For example there is no way to know if the water is running low. You might start your perfect shot and suddenly the low water levels switch opens and the whole machine turns off 😅 but I think if you can find it for a good price, it is a awesome platform. It really has crazy stable temps, even compared to machine several times the price I paid for it.
