Derrick Head I grew up in little Italy from 1990 to 2004. It was a horrible place during that time and it was the only place I knew. It was only Italian people, Mexican people that lived in that area you'd get your black or white people here and there. Most of all the close knit families that lived there started moving out cause of new buildings and white people moving in. We moved from little Italy in 04 to North Park and the same shit happen with North Park a bunch of white hipster people and their bars. In city heights you can see it happening slowly. I'll see some white people running in the morning I'll be like what the fuck? Haha city heights isn't as bad as it used to be. Back when I moved in 06.

I am a native San Diegan. Most of my childhood was spent living off 51st and El Cajon Blvd. Let me tell you, you want to know about the streets, ask an older person who remembers. Not these young kids who don't really know anything but stories they may have been told. North Park, East Dago, those were places you did not even want to walk down the street at night. You could not wear certain colors. West Coast Crip, Rollin' 40's, East Side Piru, and so many other gangs roamed freely, practically unchecked. The police were overwhelmed. And crack was the name of the game. Home values decreased because of the gangs, and the danger, not to mention the graffiti and trash. Schools were ridiculously underfunded. It was bad. I think it was a GENIUS move to renovate that entire area, raise rent, and push the criminal element out. Homeowners saw huge rise in the equity of their homes, businesses boomed and grew, and now look at that part of town, it is beautiful. Otay Mesa, Chula Vista, South San Diego, National City, all the way to Barrio Logan were next, and so on and so forth, raising the rent, and pushing the criminal element out, and reclaiming our cities. One kid in this video called it gentrification. No baby, it is called reclaiming what is rightfully ours (the citizens and taxpayers) and taking back the streets from the gangsters. I know that the job isn't finished yet, but the city is a whole lot safer, cleaner, and prettier. Those of us that are old enough to remember the mess the city was in, in the 80's and 90's, are so glad to see it improving today.

Im from the bay. Lived in SD for 5 years. Live in Baltimore now, and frequent southeast DC and Brooklyn all the time. I definitely can tell the difference. As far as hoods go the east coast used bricks as its foundations. Thats why there hoods look fucked up. You cant really restore brick to my knowledge cause all of these cities out here have not been restored. Cali uses stucco. It looks like a different country out here compared to the east. Now mentality wise its different. Streetlife has much more influence in the West than the East from what I observe. I think thats because of geographics. For one, on the East theres cops everywhere! In California there's area's where cops wont go alone and because the areas have been owned for generations by families or people rather than government owned projects, they developed differently. In the West, you can establish rules and regulations or basically a culture within a culture. Ive been pressed way more times in the short amount of time that I lived in SD compared to living on the East Coast. On the East coast you can be away from the bull shit.

I’m from the VA and I was out Daygo for about 4 yrs living out Palm Beach near Coronado. I ventured out to the hoods I visited Lincoln park and I chilled on skyline for a bit. The homies showed me hella love. I hated it when I moved I even had hella fun out lemon grove. The west coast is definitely better than the East coast

I Iive in SD for 5 years and just recently left. They are really over doing it the shit ain’t that bad and I’m from East St. Louis so take my word for it. SD is a candyland. Not saying SD ain’t got a hood they definitely do but so does every other city in the US. Now take another 10 min drive and go to Tj Mexico, now that’s a different story. And SD crime is mostly theft/car vandalism. Especially since they legalize weed for rec use
