The spaceship 'Event Horizon' was launched in 2040, which leaves us 17 years from now. Considering the time to build such a vehicle, I would subtract another ~7 years (a cargo ship takes around 3 years to build, so I think 7 years might would suffice), which leaves us roughly 10 years to develop space travel and the basics of moon and mars colonization. The best part in the movie, is the captains chair in the rescue spacecraft. When he has to issue a command to his crew on the flight deck, he has to turn the chair towards that person. Takes him some seconds to turn the chair, very slowly. Good for him they never got into a panic situations where he had to issue many commands very fast, it would take him 5-10 minuts to issue 20 commands :)

1 -- They extensively tested the black hole "drive" before building a titanic expensive space vessel that could carry a large crew, and sending it off with some confidence on what was going to happen (they wouldn't disappear and/or die). 2 -- They did little or no testing, spent vast wealth for nothing, and murdered scores or possibly hundreds of crew. 3 -- The newly arrived crew know so little about their mission that they do not recognize the purpose of explosives openly situated around the ship, which are somehow meant to severe the front of the ship from the back, as if this was somehow an expected outcome or could somehow serve as a rescue system. 4 -- When the investigation/rescue mission is designed, nobody could recognize or translate Latin, but one crew member upon hearing the message for the first time immediately recognizes and translate it, I mean mistranslates it and corrects the translation later, and the corrected version just happens to be far more sinister. Somebody get Daniel Jackson in here! 5 -- At the end, of course a reason has been invented to use the bombs. 6 -- If only they'd tested the drive. Oops, too bad.

He created the event horizon to reach the stars but the ship tore a hole in the universe and the crew of the event horizon found themselves in HELL where souls are tormented, when he came back from HELL he was a different man, that's is what i get from the film.

@@ftniceberg874 more than logical, I can give you objective reasons: it might start a fire, it consumes oxygen, which is certainly a limited supply, it's dirty and it smells awful (and of course, it's more noticeable in small enclosed places). Finally, it's highly unhealthy, and these guys need to be in a permanent good shape, since we all know that being in outer space has negative impacts over the human body. Smoking will even make it worse. Do you really think that current astronauts smoke, when they are on a space mission, for instance, in the ISIS (the International Space Station)? I hope I have reasoned your concerns.

When the movie was made, smoking was seen as something trivial, but times have changed and it has been gradually banned. This came out around the time I was 11 or 12. My dad had one of those worked satellite cards where you could get the pay per view channels, and this gem was showing. I had no clue what I was getting myself into watching this in the middle of the night alone... This was the first movie I ever watched that I found genuinely disturbing. A bit too cheesy at times, but really as heavy as the movie is you almost need to comedic relief for a bit of a breather. Hard to beat this in my mind as the top of the horror genre

Don't see how that's scary. 2047 was just an arbitrary (and grossly unrealistic) year the movie decided to use. Mankind will barely be traveling to the moon by 2047. The obstacles to 'safe space travel and survival' are WAY bigger than most people know. And the cost to develop and build-up the technology are staggering.

Came here after reading, "I have a super USB drive"(MC has a USB drive that lets him open movie dimensions). the author has an interesting theory in the event horizon, the spaceship traveled in the subspace, in his story the subspace is not viewable by sight and if you look at it you will die the only way to see the real subspace is by gouging one's eyes and the subspace eats away your sanity so you can't stay there for long.

The whole problem might have been averted if they'd gotten the translation right in the first place. If he was that uncertain, surely he would have taken the time to make sure the Latin translation was right before committing the ship to a rescue? It's a great horror movie though. Haunted house in space with a Shining-style possession. It scared the bejesus out of me. I had no idea that friendly, cuddly Jurassic Park Sam Neill could be so sinister! Great actor. Good cast overall.
