Espionage ideas are no joke in the HRE. I often tend to pick them as either first or second group. AE reduction is the most important thing, siege ability helps with taking all those capital forts and advisor discount is a nice bonus to it all.

Espionage, diplomatic, and influence are basically the only first idea groups I pick, they all make expansion much faster.

I think espionage is like a more aggressive diplomatic idea option and it also helps with generating points with that advisor cost and obviously the points you save with claiming areas

You can also conquer more before aggressive expansion causes a coalition and diplo annex quicker with a straight up +15 reasons.

Unfortunately the modern Parmesan (Parmigiano Reggiano) is a community of factories between Parma, Reggio Emilia and Modena. It isn't a exclusive of Parma anymore. If you want something exclusive of Parma, it can become the color of the Parma Ham

Espionage is even better when you realize the power of spy networks. Obviously they are used for claims but additional having a high spy network with a country decrease siege time, reduces AE, helps with tech costs (if they’re ahead of you) & that having claims reduces autonomy and cost to core.

majority of try hards in eu4 that are doing stuff like world conquests and fast blobbing never take espionage, because there are far better ideas for fast expanding.

You should make more vids about the mid game. After watching you and some of the other fellas that chonks these vids out im confident in starting with pretty much every nation there is. However i still struggle midgame. The management just fails me i usually drown in riots no manpower and i mess up the balance of things so i end up either poor or silly rich (which sure might not sound like an issue but its usually indictive that i went tall by mistake). then ofcourse due to this there is time for coalitions to form and sometimes i can work around it but its obvious im doing something wrong. Even when i do things right. (doing an austria run that went awesome to 1650 or so clocked over 4000 dev at that point) Now ive barely been able to move for 100 years due to being absolutely swamped in riots and i got this really big alliance on one side and a perpetual damn coaltion in my arse. I also never get the imp points as high as people seem to do nor do i get the quests to trigger. (used your austria guide to the letter yet it never plays out the same) was also abit "unlucky" since i very rapidly inherited bohemia, milan and poland so i lost alot of my offensive chonk.

I think it’s really funny how when I started playing, espionage was considered one of the worst idea groups in the game while defensive was considered top tier based off the morale. 5 years later, I never pick defensive while espionage is one of my top picks for a first idea group. Funny how both the meta has changed both from balance patches and from the community’s knowledge of the game.

Espionage really isn't as bad as people think anymore

It's not. The yearly corruption reduction makes corruption a non-factor (including unbalanced techs) for the rest of the game, and gives more estate reform opportunities which the corruption would make unviable. Furthermore, it is the only idea which gives aggressive expansion, and thus makes poor decisions less punishing to new players, and weakens the primary limiting factor for expansion in strong players, coalitions. It gives +10% siege ability and in the late game it protects against sow discontent. Lastly, it makes that sweet sweet -10% CCR from claims easier to get (whole states at a time), which is great for nations without mission trees. Not a waste of points. edit: I used to play when espionage was bad, but if you are basing it off of what it was 5 years ago, I would encourage you to play with it now. If you have played with it now, I guess we just disagree. Also, what cav bonuses does it give outside of policies? There are none.
