In one of my PhD applications I had 3 interviews (I applied for a PhD in Applied Math). The fist one was with a research scientist in the research group I wanted to applied for. Prior to the first interview they first asked for a bunch of info about my courses and my publications and so on. On the first interview they mostly helped me with my statement of purpose and asked me if I had any questions of the research group and how they work. The second interview was with a professor of the math department and it was a test. They gave me a list of subjects and a week for study. On the day of the interview, the professor shared her screen and we discussed the solutions to problems and basic definitions. They just wanted to verify my math level. The third interview was administrative, this uni is in Saudi Arabia, so they wanted to know if I could fit living in their campus.

@@KaelynGraceApple It was!! Specially the "academic" interview where I was required to ask math questions. It was a 30-45 minutes interview where I had four test with five questions each. The subjects were Calculus (one and several variables) combined with differential equations, Algebra, Probability and Statics and Discrete Math. I had to review around 8 books for preparing.

@@sebastiangutierrez6424 That's weird. Why would you ask a math major trivial high school kinds of questions? That's not what university level mathematics is.
@sebastiangutierrez64242 жыл бұрын
@@schmetterling4477 I'm not sure what you mean by high school mathematics. To be fair, the questions could have been answered by a physicist or maybe an engineer with a serious interest for mathematics.

Sometimes the case is you don’t get to choose who to speak to. They assign five profs to meet you, then they decide amongst themselves who wants to take you on.

Kaelyn, Thanks for making informative videos for graduate admission! I liked your later part of the video(after the fifth tip). I have two questions-1. Do the biological sciences have admission interviews(if yes, who conducts the interview( the admission committee or the faculty)? 2. Is it better to communicate with the admission committee or the faculties?(since the admission committee always asks to submit the application(regardless of the greater chances of getting admitted).
@KaelynGraceApple4 жыл бұрын
I personally do not possess knowledge on whether biological science programs will require interviews, though often interviews are required by specific departments and not by others. As for you second question, it depends on the question. If you have a question about your application, ask the DGS. For program questions or specific questions related to you potential advisor, you may email them - though be cognizant of the timing!
