The term #StationWagon has such a long history in the US and was once the family car of choice for many Americans about 40 years ago. Subaru took a risk about 25 years ago when they added some cladding and lifted a Legacy #Wagon and what started out as an experiment, grew to become the best-selling model in the Subaru lineup with nearly 200,000 units sold every year. The latest #SubaruOutback fills a cool niche between a compact and midsize SUV in terms of size, yet offers more off-road capability that most of those crossover SUV's without the "uncool" look of the station wagons you remembered riding in as a kid.

I drove pick-ups for 30 years. Never really towed or hauled so I dropped in and bought one of these on a whim. Best thing ever. I only had 2wd trucks and this thing has gone further than they ever could. Great fun.

As an owner of an outback and a legacy. I did not buy either for the off-road capability. I bought a subaru cause it has amazing visability, cost to own is very good, insurance is affordable, have TONs of space, standard roof rails, smooth, awd for snow and decent gas mileage

Subaru has really improved over the years. And especially the 2020 Outback and Legacy models, the interior is second to none in the non-luxury class. I'm impressed for that amount of money.👌👍

my dad bought a outback in 1995 when his new legacy was destroyed in an accident, ever since we've had every single generation of outbacks, one from 2002, another from 2008, then 2012, 2017 and finally 2022. as a regular passager i can say its very comfortrable, awesome for snow, and bad terrain and the design is beautiful, i havent drove one yet but i was basically born in one:)

From my own experience I know my parents can trade in a year old Outback for practically what they paid for it and buy a new one so they just keep trading them in due to the high resale. They always get the same model though, not a base but not a ton of options so it’s right in the sweet spot. I can’t say I blame them!

Good history review and very fair, but most reviewers forget that those faithful Subaru lovers are older too. You have just reviewed the exact 2 cars we just bought within a view months of each other. We live in the NC mtns so love the CVT and paddle shifters. We just replaced a WRX with a Legacy XT Touring and a Forester Touring with the Outback XT Touring. We have had an Audi A4(great 4 wheel drive!), Mercedes 240 D. Porsche 944, WV Passat wagon with turbo, a Honda Prelude, Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi, Jeep Wrangler and a BMW 318 of varying years and swear by Subaru now. We are 71 and 72 years old. So all owners are not young👍

Never discount the impact of having Crocodile Dundee advertising for you. Seriously though, when it first came out, it was more spacious than the CR-V & RAV4 at the time. That was a big feature.

I bought a 2008 Outback in December, with just over 100K on it. I’ve been very happy with it so far. If find the base 2.5 with 170 horsepower quite adequate, as it has no trouble passing someone at or under 60 on a two lane road. I like the way it drives, and it’s not a bad looking vehicle for being 12 years old.

Totally agree!!! I just very recently purchased a '11 Outback with the 3.6R, 5 speed auto (with 140K on it). Silky smooth transmission! And I love its acceleration!! I also enjoy that it does not have all the crazy tech. I figure that means less things to possibly break/fix. The ride comfort is also amazing for a lifted station wagon!! Plus this vehicle has just enough of the bells & whistles that I need: cruise control; heated seats; leather seats; AWD (among others). Although it does not have ventilated seats, the previous owner installed a remote starter. Nice bonus!!! I am absolutely loving my Subie so far!!!!! (Well, except for the front face. I don't particularly like the look of the grill. But hey, can't have everything.) The only thing that is going to make me love it more......getting LOTS and LOTS of snow this coming winter!!!! Looking forward to the adventures!! LOL!!

Andrew.Woolman AWD is the best selling feature of almost all of the Subarus. It add car stability. It avoid slippery as your car will have traction on all the wheels all the time at all conditions, not only when snowing but when raining hard. You need to do a deep search. That’s why Subaru adapted the CVT transmission to make them gas efficient. Any Subaru will match on gas saving their own competition in the same car category.

Eric Pizarro not many people buy cars with AWD, in southern USA, where it never snows, I see more 2WD on the road than AWD, even my Pilot is FWD. some people would prefer FWD to save more on gas. Even if I buy AWD, I’m probably never get to use AWD system to get out of a mud or sand. I think at least they need to put FWD on sedans like legacy and Impreza.

Our Volvo XC 60 was destroyed in an accident and in June of 2023 we replaced it with a new Outback Touring XT. We’ve owned several BMWs, a Honda Accord and a CR-V, a Nissan Pathfinder, a Volvo XC60, a Saturn, etc. Never a Subaru, for some reason. But honestly, we’re very impressed with the build quality, utility, the technology, and just the overall design and drivability of the Outback. Not sure about the reliability as it’s only been a month, but based on current ratings, I expect it will fair well. So far, it seems like an excellent vehicle.

Here in the Pacific Northwest Subaru owners comprise a near cult-like group. (A polite and friendly cult but a cult, nonetheless.) :) If you don't own a Subaru you know someone who does. Even minor criticisms of their vehicles are likely to cost you invitations to neighborhood parties and family Thanksgiving dinners. To say Subar-ites are loyal is like saying Seahawk fans are loyal. And none are more loyal than Outback owners. So when Subaru introduced the Ascent I wondered about the future of the Outback. With the 3 row Ascent and the fact that the more conventional Forester crossover seemed to grow each year like a HS football player, I thought the Outback sales might be squeezed both from above and below. Obviously, Subaru is doing its best to be sure that doesn't happen. And judging from 2019 calendar year sales it appears they were initially successful. The Outback outsold the Ascent by about 100,000 units and outsold the Forester by a few thousand units despite the Forester's best sales year. Unfortunately for 2020 the picture is dismal for the first quarter and likely to remain so throughout the year. Sales of the Outback are down 22%, the Forester by 20%, and the Ascent by 18% from January through March compared to 2019. Of course, Subaru isn't alone. With rare exceptions the entire automotive industry has surpassed a "recession" and is in "depression" territory. But on the bright(er) side when sales eventually recover Subaru's cushion of customer loyalty will be a significant asset. As far as the Outback vs the Ascent and Forester is concerned, it's worth noting that the XT version of the Outback has the same engine and drivetrain as the Ascent in a vehicle with over 650 lbs in curb weight savings. If one doesn't need seating for six or more, the better performance and handling that stems from the Outback's weight advantage is a significant advantage. And as far as the Forester is concerned, the fact that Subaru doesn't offer the turbo version of the 2.4L four banger in the Forester provides an advantage in that comparison, as well. When we shopped for a vehicle in 2012, the KIA Sorento narrowly beat out the Outback for the family road trip vehicle and my wife's daily driver. When we decided to replace the KIA last year the new generation Outback wasn't yet available and we gave the last generation only a cursory look knowing it would soon be retired. If we were in the market now, however, we'd look much more carefully at the Outback.

I still liked the 97 Outback with its 2.5 Liter engine with 163HP. I had that vehicle for 13 awesome years. My Grandson has a 2005 Outback XT with the 5-speed manual. That is probably Subaru's best looking Outback with lots of performance. It makes me want to buy the 2020 Outback XT that would probably be an upgrade to my 2014 Outback. My 2005 Baja (Non-turbo) was a fun vehicle to drive because it was so well balanced and the pass through was surprisingly useful for when I had to move long pieces of wood when I used to help out with Mountain bike Trail maintenance/trail building. I could go on and on, but I will stop here.

I had the 2009 Outback 3.0R in black. Loved that car... as you say... very much the sweet spot for sporty... and was not frumpy like the later generations. I did a cubby replacement so I could get Apple car play. It sadly got to a point where I had to replace it (issue with a mechanic rather than Subaru... but once it was running again it was time to trade in). I went with the Outback Onyx XT in charcoal.... man its nice. More power, more torque, more towing, and better MPG. The new platform is really nice too.... its definitely stiffer and more responsive. Definitely liking it.

We are on our 3rd Outback. The ‘08 was by far our favorite. Yes, it was definitely more raw, suffered from significant wind noise, had only a 4 speed automatic, lacked stability control and no rear window tint. It was rugged, looked great and performed flawlessly in the long WIsconsin winter. Handling was demonstrably more linear and predictable. The fatal understeer on our ‘18 is troubling. The CVT transmission mated with the 2.5 does drone and whine, Sofyan. The OEM tires are suited more for Florida rather than the regions for which Subaru markets the Outback. The seats are immensely comfortable, visibility is fantastic and the wagon swallows an amazing volume of gear, however, our public tryst with the brand is coming to an end.

I think one reason that legions of people buy the Outback is the combination of capable AWD and ground clearance for snowy winters. I just bought a 21 Outback Onyx XT after driving nothing but WRXs since 2002. I got it for the winter and off-road capability, cavernous cargo area, soft suspension, direct handling, reasonable acceleration, and I also think it looks cool. A lot of auto journalists who don't seem to understand this car say that it sells well because Subaru has successfully hidden the fact that it's a wagon disguised as an SUV, while other manufacturers haven't figured out the formula for fooling people. I think that's ridiculous. Personally, I don't give a rip if you call it a wagon, SUV, car, or whatever--it's functional, it's versatile, it looks cool, and it just works.
@panzer_TZ
@panzer_TZ 4 жыл бұрын
Quite simple: People like the practicality of a Station Wagon, but people hate the image and word “wagon.” All Subaru did was make it look as much as an SUV as possible by adding cladding and ground clearance, and markets it as a crossover. Average Joe or Jane gets to enjoy the benefits of a wagon without having to call it or deal with the image normally associated with a station wagon. Absolutely genius move by Subaru.

I bought the outback XT touring in March 21. For the price $40K, the fully loaded car is at least $20k cheaper than any other brand .. I wont be using It much for off roading but living in a desert climate, the internal luxury, STARLINK remote start with aircon, safety features, awd, comfort, advanced adaptive cruise, voice commands, turbo engine .. oh and 5 yrs 0% and no down payment !! .. Hoping the CVT will not give issues in the future and is not the easiest drive train to be smooth under harsh acceleration. Unless you use “manual” paddle shift and “change” around 4,000 rpm resulting in a 0-60 around 5.7 seconds raising eyebrows as this sleeper out Accelerates most cars from the traffic lights when i am in the mood !.. So far I am extremely impressed and happy with my first Subaru purchase

I had a 4th gen Outback, I think 2012, in Premium trim. I never liked how the front looked, but it was a terrific family car. I’ve always said I’d buy another one if I needed a vehicle in its class. And you’re right about the Legacy, it’s very bland. We had a 2012 Legacy, too, in Limited trim, and I really liked its looks. I think that was the last time the Legacy was even slightly quirky. The only reason to buy a new one vs. any other car in its class is if you simply must have AWD.

I have the same Outback, but in the Limited trim. The car is very frumpy and conservative, but it conquers northeast winters and holds a bunch of junk very well. While it doesn't have a single frill, it just gets on with the business of the day without a hitch, and I think that is really what makes it great. It's not flashy but I find it to have more personality than the Ford Edge, CRVs, and RAV4s of the world that all just blend together into a sea of shapeless hunks of moving metal.

I have the XT limited and agree with most of your comments. What Subaru does not have right is the head unit. There is apparently a fix for the slow performance of the head unit (freezes, slow to respond), I have to get that, hopefully it will help. The start stop does not seem to wrk right, at least in my car. It never lasts an entire red light, even when hot and no accessories on. The heated steering wheel does not heat between 10 and 2 on the wheel. Other than these picadillies it is a nice riding car.

Wanted a wagon a few months ago n crossshopped the subie, vw, n Buick . The subie just looked chunky it’s styling was to elegant as the tour x. Even with knowing that Buick was on the verge of being cancelled it’s styling was just so elegant and the outback just looked clunky. On top of that Subaru had no buyers incentive while we received a 10k discount plus a 750 Costco card ( I know because no interest in the model) but all wheel drive plus built in Germany for us it was the obvious choice. And we love the Buick and are happy with the choice we made and we never see another around!

I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of why the Legacy doesn't sell in greater numbers. I've owned a Legacy and liked it but the whole time I owned it, I was wishing for an Accord or Camry AWD sedan. The Camry and Accord, especially the Accord, have superior driving dynamics. Even the new, milqutoast Altima drives better. Now that Camry and Altima offer AWD, there is really no reason to get a Legacy.

The third generation is my favorite outback. Next is the fifth generation. I still haven't warmed up to the current generation due to the excessive cladding; however, the interior looks great in the Touring XT.

good info video Sofyan, agree need sportyness back for sure, i'd like to see a 2.4 turbo option in UK/EU Gen6 when they decide to launch it and a heated steering wheel, which is not an option in our regions (even cold Scandinavian's cant have it)! Still loving my 2019 Gen 5, and first auto gear car. Eyesight has saved my arse several times in last 9 months! Levorg looks great but has the same crappy 2.0L NA rev hanging engine in the XV. Even a Levorg with Outback default 2.5 NA engine, would be better.

Actually, the minivan killed the station wagon after Chrysler introduced the Dodge Caravan in 1984. Mass-market SUVs (like the Ford Explorer) didn't appear until 1990, and quickly replaced the minivans.

Nice review. I think you meant to say 2 million, not 200k in the intro. Unless you were talking about one specific model-year. Well I do wish it had a traditional stepped automatic, we own a 2015 with the six cylinder, and are considering this the I new 2020 model with the turbo. Nice stop at 24:01 😯

I love wagons and I'm cross shopping the outback and forester right now. I prefer the shape of the outback and the turbo engine, but I prefer the smaller footprint, lighter weight and better fuel economy of the forester. The outback is a bit too large for my needs and the reduced fuel economy is a major issue since I commute almost 100 miles a day. I'll probably wind up going with the forester since it is the right size for me and gets significantly better mileage, but I do love the outback.

Ps , love the subarus , I live in the Sierra Nevadas, we get a lot of snow, these wagons plow through it w ease, had a 2012 that I loved , it got totalled by a huge huge chunk of ice, was going to get another in q 2015 or up, then I saw a decent deal on the doo doo brown 2020, so I grabbed it w only 15,000 miles , full 100,00 miles warranty, free oil changes for the ownership of the car and took the plunge , so far I've loved it, super nice, but will say its so nice im not wanting to beat it up lol, w the pups and off roads , but I'm sure come summer I'll be taking it to the backroads 😁

I just bought one yesterday. My opinion as to why the Outback sells so well is because it is the only vehicle in it’s class. For us, it was replacing a Volvo V60, and if my wife yadn’t selected the Outback, our second choice was an Audi Q5. The Audi Allroad would have been on the list, except they do not exist. So for a 5-passenger AWD vehicle with cargo soace and “outdoorsy” features, only the Outback satisies the criteria.

We went looking to replace our long in the tooth -12 years - HHR. A wagon. We have almost owned ‘wagons’ consistently. Two Volvo - a 240 and a 740 - and only replaced the latter with our first Silverado. In our research, we looked at a Chevy equinox and GMC clone, Jeep Cherokee, and briefly at other SUV. We wanted ground clearance, excellent AWD/4WD performance, decent fuel economy, good maneuver ability in town, and a strong safety suite. The Outback met all those criteria without being much longer than our venerable HHR. All the others lacked one or more of these features. Equinox lacked ground clearance and good AWD, Cherokee lacked creature comforts and safety suite, etc.. Fair enough, we did go for the Touring XT because it featured creature comforts only available in other high end cars for much higher cost. At the end of the day, we thought it proved best bang for the buck. And we have not been disappointed in the least.

When you peel the onion to its core, isn't an SUV a wagon and vice versa? What makes a station wagon not an SUV?
