With its funky design, surprising amount of interior space, powerful turbo engine, and standard 6-speed stick, the Veloster R-Spec certainly makes a strong case for itself on paper. Those of you looking for something other then your friends Civic or tC coupe may find a lot to like with this 2016 model. Just keep in mind those of you wanting the serious performance of a hot hatch, may want to look elsewhere.

I love my red seat belts and the extra HP is welcome. It is not the best car in the world, but it is one of the best at its price. The Veloster is a unique car and the turbo just adds to its fun. Test drive the competitors first and you will understand if it is for you or not. I can own many cars of more cost, but this one is the most fun I have tried. Now, on my third one, I will say it is a solid ride and more fun than shown in this video. Maybe if I didn't have a garage full of motorcycles, I might choose differently ... and if you do not plan to go into competition ... this is well worth it in so many ways.

Bike rider too. 200 hp, front wheel drive (Canadian/snow) great milage and fun to drive. I have a mini base now but looking for a bit more punch. I drove one a few years ago and had a blast. Not sure why I didn't buy it. Looking to possibly pick one up. Comments are always where you find out more about the car/bike you are looking at. Thanks for the real comment. Cheers.

You need to remove fuse 25 to get rid of the fake intake sound. You can remove a few pins in the plug to the amplifier or put a switch in the line to remove that fake sound from the speakers. I drove my wife's R-Spec VT across town recently and it was amazing how many looks and stares I got from other drivers. Ride quality is partly due to the crappy tires. I have read that new tires that have good grip really improve ride, wheel hop, loss of traction when accelerating, handling and faster 0-60 times since they improve getting power down.

My Veloster base automatic gets 38.9 MPG. I can't see how it was rated so poorly.

Your car is the base model, the turbo supposed to be 30mpg average, instead it's barely hitting 24mpg. That's kinda sad if you look up a V6 Charger or Chevy Impala nearly twice the weight and twice the engine size and they get nearly 30mpg.

Also, why do you go full acceleration while turning pretty much 90 degrees on most tests? Have you considered not doing this? It also amplifies torque steer which leads to a poor review on a cars torque steer. I'm not sure many people go WOT when almost at full wheel lock, ever.

You have to hold down the button to turn off your traction control and stability system to get rid of that wheel hop. I am up to 255 hp with my SXTH element engineering mods.

the rspec says on paper it makes 201, but dyno charts say they put down 185-189, so the rspec has more like 215-220hp. the turbo model also has 16 lbs of boost compared to 18 on the rspec

I have an R-Spec, and I installed a boost gauge. I never see it above 15-16 psi, so this guy may be misinformed. As far as I know there is no difference between the turbo and r-spec engine wise.

Just went from a 14 Si to a 16 Veloster turbo manual. Different cars but I like boost of the Hyundai and the fact that it's lighter. It's one of the few compacts on my bucket list. The Honda feels a bit more refined but the 2.4 was rather bland compared to the 08 Si I had with the K20. The Veloster is fun, you can feel the boost. Any short-comings with the suspension dynamics can be helped with minor aftermarket. I have no brand loyalty and from an unbiased position I think the Veloster Turbo is just as engaging as my 14 Si but not quite as good, overall, as my 08 Si.

Agreed Dustin. I drove a 2012 base veloster for about a year.. about 18k miles. No grip at all at high speeds, highway speeds + wet roads/rain = terrifying experience.

Fredrick Altenhoff my dct is faster then my old manual turbo veloster I had especially after the eco update. Hope this helps. It's a little jerky when cold. But most dcts are.

Yes but the Rally and R-Spec are much more sporty than the Turbo. But the Turbo has more creature comforts. The front tires are still the crappy, worthless Kumho tires? That is what we have on our 2014. Soon as my wife complains enough, they are going to be swapped for a good, performance all-season. The Kumho ones just have no freaking grip. We get snow in KC so I can't put performance summer tires on it. Hyundai claims it has the break torque vectoring to simulate an LSD like the Focus ST does. I don't ever get wheel hop unless the pavement is rough but the tires just can't handle the torque. I mean yeah we got it for $19.2K and it was loaded up as much as it could be. So it is a lot less expensive than the competition like the Fiat 500 Abarth and Fiesta ST. Drive it like my wife, normal and it gets mixed of around 29-30mpg. My driving it drops a bit.

Also they power tapering between shifts is because of the gear indicator that recommends what gear you need to be in. If you unplug it from the clutch it completely eliminates it. Also makes the throttle lag non existent.

I owned one a few years back. LOVED the look. Handling was fine. Power was disappointing even with the turbo. I would have gladly paid considerably more for a better engine. I then went to an S4, Charger RT AWD, and now a WRX.

They have a long way to go with the Veloster. I can't get over the accent chassis. Its really holding the car back. They need to make the Rally edition AWD with a bigger turbo. It definitely has the potential to be a real rally hatch. I'm tired of manufactures putting bland "upgrades" and color schemes, as if they justify the speciality of any edition of a car.. scion tc for example.

This car was a real sales failure here in the UK. Press reviews were mediocre particularly with regard to driving experience. Hyundai UK did not wait long before axing it from the range.
