Fun fact: The old man who keeps Gizmo is played by Keye Luke, one of the first Chinese-Americans to make it huge in the Entertainment Industry. He starred in a lot of film and television roles, he helped found the Screen Actor's Guild, and he painted the murals in Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Pretty impressive resume, if you ask me.

ps watch the deleted scenes. It tells alot more of Futterman why he got fired, and what is really happening between Mrs Deegal and the bank manager, PLUS it shows what happens to Judge Reindhold which is hilarious ! the dudes lost his mind!

Ahhh, not sure if you missed it, but one of my favorite easter eggs of this film is when the Dad is at the convention and the original Time Machine is behind him-- you can hear the pilot powering it up, and when it cuts back between the conversation's shots, the time machine is definitely gone and EVERYONE is like, "WTF JUST HAPPENED" behind the dad lol.

Chris Columbus is like the king of Christmas Holiday movies. Gremlins, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Christmas With The Kranks, and The Christmas Chronicles 2 were all helmed by the director. Not to mention Harry Potter is sort of an honorary Christmas movie.
@joneljustbecause
@joneljustbecause 9 ай бұрын
While Chris Columbus wrote this film, it’s really Joe Dante’s direction that makes this movie what it is. You can tell once you see other Joe Dante directed films such as The Burbs, The Howling, Small Soldiers and of course The New Batch. However, Chris Columbus did direct my other favorite Christmas movie, Home Alone. I have to watch both films every year around Christmas or it simply feels like something’s wrong. Also, Die Hard! It’s 100% a Christmas movie 😂

We had a smokeless ashtray at an old job I used to work at. There were many times where one person was the only employee in the store and the manager smoked. So we had this ashtray in the back room, where you could still see the store, but the ash tray had a fan that would suck all the smoke in from any cigarette that was laying on it and pump out clean air. When you blew out smoke, you blew it towards the ashtray. It wasn’t perfect, but it got a good amount of the smoke. This was during the early 90s though, so smoking indoors wasn’t banned yet.

It's clever how the failed inventor Dad is a metaphor for the entire story,.. i.e. He gives his son a 'Gizmo' for Christmas and it's dysfunctional just like all of his inventions/gizmos lying around the house. There's commentary about holiday consumerism, too. Obviously I didn't notice any of this as a kid, but it's made me appreciate the movie a little bit more as an adult.

I'm sure someone else has already said this, but 'gremlins' did exist as a word for general machinery failure prior to this movie - although I don't think many people thought they were actual physical beings. In my opinion Dick Miller's character isn't referencing the creatures in the film when he refers to gremlins early on - he is drunkenly recounting his superstitions from the war in a way that coincides exactly with the creatures in the movie, which pays off perfectly when he encounters them and they become the embodiment of that superstition. It surely is then a post-modern revision of The Seven Pillars of Mythology - all archetypes ultimately coalescing around the central concept of self. Gizmo also drives a small car. Ultimately, it's a film about loss, the unknowable, and the gremlins inside us all.

I don't know if anyone already pointed this out: "gremlins" are a WWII legend, as the veteran in the movie said. They were said to be unknown creatures that were cause the fall of many planes, they were jokingly accused when unexpected accidents or engine failures happened. (Remember that at that time, engine planes were much less reliable than nowadays. Cheers to the courage of these pilots and crew members). There's also a famous Looney Tunes cartoon of the 40's where Bugs Bunny is desperately trying to repair a plane he's flying in while the gremlins are tearing it appart - they already have more or less this same appearance, except more cartoony obviously.

Fun Fact: Originally, Stripe and Gizmo were gonna be the same character. This changed when Steven Spielberg insisted one of the Gremlins be a good guy with whom the audience could identify.

They're they same genre though lol. They both have 4th wall breaking comedy horror. The 2nd one just leans a bit more into that 4th wall breaking comedy while still keeping some crazy fun horror kills.😆👍 Love them both.

I was six when my Aunt and Uncle took me and my cousins to see this in theaters....lol. It sparked a lifelong love of horror and comedy. It dared me to push my own creativity to the level that tiny, clueless kid saw all those years ago. We were very lucky.

Hey Rox, Johnny, looking good Rox ..glad u both got to see this Spielberg 'Christmas' classic...when i watched this as a kid over 20 yrs i loved it even though it was an 80's movie.. i think we were a little scared by the Gremlins but i get as an adult its just funny, Stripe was an evil bad ass..never felt sorry for the Gremlins though...Gizmo is the greatest, when i first saw Grogu i was like this cuteness is familiar..Definitely should watch every Christmas, such an under rated movie, should be talked about more...

Red letter media made an interesting pitch which i believe joe Dante approved of.

At not quite eight years old (6, for my brother), Gremlins was kind of horrifying. Scary isn't a problem for me, but disgusting things really stick with me, and Gremlins has plenty: The blender, the microwave, the mucus-covered eggs and the squelching noises they make, Stripe melting, and any time the Gremlins are eating. The REAL scary part is that this was out at the same time as Ghostbusters, and my mother didn't want to take us to that, because she thought it would be too scary, so we went to see Gremlins. Yeah... I was born under a bad sign. Temple of Doom was also out at that time and, together with Gremlins, was responsible for the PG-13 rating becoming a thing. "Gremlins...Mega Madness" was written by Michael Sembello, who also wrote "Maniac," from Flashdance. Gremlins, Ghostbusters, and Temple of Doom were all huge at the time. As a kid, if you wanted anything with Gremlins or Ghostbusters on it, you could get it. I don't remember as many children's products with Temple of Doom, though... I definitely had a Raiders of The Lost Ark coloring book.
