@@jackstamford9937 Wouldn't call it weird. We all saw how qualifying for the Champion's League affected Newcastle's league form and it's the same story here again. The stupid FFP rules didn't help either, our "reward" for achieving UCL status was having to sell one of our best key players last season (Douglas Luiz) to avoid a points deduction/financial penalties. Hardly a level playing field, that. How are we supposed to build when rules force us to sell our stars? I don't think we'll achieve UCL again this season, but another European spot is the aim. We're not quite at the levels we reached last season but that's still very possible - and the UCL campaign itself is going unbelievably well, so there's that too!

Not having Szoboszlai was a big blow. Curtis Jones has one good game every 5 games and people always remember that because he is Scouse. Szoboszlai literally drops a 7/10 every week and is the most vital part of our press. These are our results when we focus solely on him: Drew vs Arsenal (Szobo didn't start) Drew vs Newcastle (Szobo didn't start) Drew vs United (Szobo didn't play) Drew vs Fulham (Szobo single-handedly kept us in the game with 10 men) Loss vs Forest (one of our best players) Win vs City (Szobo MOTM for me and bullied their midfield) Win vs United (Szobo best player for me, bullied their midfield) Win vs Spurs (Szobo involved in 5/6 goals) All the plaudits will go to Macca and Ryan, but for me, Szoboszlai is the crown jewel of our midfield.

Regardless of how we end up ranking at the end of this season is, I’ll be proud of our run. In terms of “playing the game out” or “bad game management”, our biggest weakness has been fitness in the last 5-10 minutes

I think the penalty given against Arsenal was a reaction to the player rolling around. I’ve been elbowed in the face and the resulting crack from my eye socket to my teeth needed plates. You just hit the ground in pain, you don’t roll around trying to get attention! Also, I saw many players carrying, nudging and kicking the ball away from where a foul took place and not a single Ref gave a card or saw it as an offence, yet Rice was penalised. Why?

I’m not sold on the arsenal incident being a penalty , but I do agree with Alan , it’s a distinctly unique case and not a 50/50 because Pedro quite clearly has the ball completely under control and has intentionally flicked it up to header it and in real time it looks as if he has been completely taken out with a head butt which is a foul no different to if the contact came from another body part. Also in real time it looks like a penalty and if you need freeze frames and for it to be slowed down to 0.1 of game speed to discern the slightest of potential touches of the ball from saliba then it’s not a clear and obvious refereeing era so hardly a really egregious call. But arsenal fans are sports greatest victims , the spurs one is significantly worse. ( West Ham fan )

As a Liverpool fan I think that Trent has been outstanding for us and will still respect him if he decides to leave for Madrid. However, yesterday he was the weakest player on the pitch for Liverpool. I got the feeling that his heart wasn’t really in the match, passing was off and defensive work was poor (I am sure that Virgil was giving he the evil eyes a few times). May be he was making sure he wouldn’t get injured and scupper a deal, only he knows. I thought that Connor Bradly should have been given more of a chance. He has been impressive in the same position and he doesn’t mind doing the defensive work.

I agree with Gary on this. I am an Arsenal fan, and I hated what happened at Brighton. The PGMOL should introduce a system like the review system in cricket. It only goes up to the third umpire (VAR in this case) when the team reviews it, this makes the game way faster and don't have to wait for every stupid decisions. Plus, the third umpire correcrsts the on the field umpire if it's a no ball which could be used for offside decisions for goals. PLEASE PGMOL GET THIS!!

The EFL should really start something every month, with an independent journalist, or football professional (not tied to any teams) as well as someone who is responsible for VAR Decisions/appeals, and finally someone who is responsible for Referees and their decisions. This supposedly already “happens” behind closed doors and maybe if you are lucky you get to hear the radio chatter, or maybe if a decision been changed. But wether it is actually changing the process or not, it does not matter. The SFA have the VAR Review, posted on Scottish Football Association KZbin channel end of every month, to play back each controversial decision made, where they play back the full audio from the Referee, and VAR officials, with the full video and all angles captured as well. Posted by the Scottish FA, and presented by Gordon Duncan who is probably the biggest Scottish journalist for football, alongside Head of Refereeing Willie Collum. Who has had his own record of dodgy decisions made in the past for both sides of Glasgow. Ultimately, it is for the fans and for training to be used moving forward, if a mistake is made it will be admitted, and as much clarity as possible be given, as well as next steps to prevent it happening again! It’s no where near perfect, and SFA has lots of stupid decisions, and obvious mistakes made too, but I think most people do truly appreciate this. It gives some answers, and at least shows what’s being done to prevent, or correct errors moving forward.

I am glad Alan enjoyed his day at Ibrox, however, its a pity he never highlighted that a celtic player was injured by being hit by a coin in the face. Rangers get a free rein and the media needs to highlight it. Recently Celtic had a physio a scared for life by a flying glass bottle. Additionally Joe Harts had his penalty box sprayed with broken glass at half time all at Ibrox. Just a sample of the vile atmosphere created, it might be noisy but to just say it was great is ignoring what happens there. Also Celtic fans sing songs for freedom and justice. Rangers fans just sing songs about killing Catholics. A major difference. So many issues skirted over, that Rangers are never held to account for. They sang horrendous songs at the match Alan attended. I feel it should be called out more, or at least educate oneself on what they are calling great.

Amorim has gotten roughly one training session between matches since he came in. They had most of a week ahead of Liverpool, and he’s got the same going into the Arsenal match next weekend. The ideas are getting across to the players, they need repetition without it being a live game all the time. After the Liverpool match both Martinez and Fernandes did interviews and they were both disappointed with the result on the day. They know they can achieve better results and their exasperation is real. The Latin players in the team show this more visibly both on and off the pitch. But I think there is a togetherness there. Cut out conceding from set pieces (United collectively saw off TAA on Sunday with his fabled delivery) and the results look much improved. There’s no Saka next weekend on corners due to injury. Those variables matter, and a bad performance from a key opponent or an injury can have big effects on the overall narrative.

If a percentage of the player wages are performance based then you would see a positive reflection of that on the pitch.

Mr., G. Linekar: "But, I think Manchester United fans, and ... my friends, are saying the same thing, 'How can they get themselves up for a game like that and look incredibly committed, yet in other games ... particularly in recent weeks, they've almost a lethargical approach that is totally different?'. I mean, football is strange that way; you can lift yourself for a certain performance. But, ... when you are at a club of Manchester United's stature, you expect that sort of commitment(sic.) week-in, week-out. And now I suppose they'll be saying. 'Right, okay, that's a really good performance. Now, what are you going to do? Follow that up and let's have a run. And, obviously that's all dependent on circumstances and stuff. And I think, ... we saw the same thing when they won at City. I think it suits them a little bit--I mean, playing against teams that are really good, er, in attack. Because they are almost a counter-attacking team, (yeah?) In some ways--that's what we've seen in the last two three seasons. I think, United fans will be saying, 'That's the commitment we want to see, week-in, week-out.' Fair?" Yes Mr., Linekar, you presented a useful and yes, "fair" complete analysis of the Man United situation--which yes, is comparable and useful in understanding the "historic" "rise and fall" of "performance" or "results" of teams and players, past, present (and future?). You including the "motherlode" of the cruciality of certain (most) difficult to articulate and often unrecognized factors which comprise what you smartly expressed as "... obviously that's all dependent on circumstances and stuff." Just that, "circumstance" ... "and stuff" covers the hidden factors which one really never hears discussed in the detail and depth which they need to be, since this is addressing the factors that make or solve the "problem/problems" of "the ups and downs" of player, manager or team. Well, it's not a matter of "only" football; only affecting football. And this wanting to "see ('that') 'commitment', week-in, week-out" is a cliched, over-sold expression which is (I'm afraid) lacking in depth of understanding when it is often used just by itself, as it all too often is. And if used on a person (say, a footballer) will only leave them in confusion; will only wind them up. I mean? What the hells does that cliche mean: "... that commitment"--it excludes the part or parts to be "played" (those other things that need to be done, in contribution (to the player/players/team), to "again" succeed in "producing" "that" particular and very desired "result" or "performance". Asking blandly and in a trite manner for repeated "showings"/"demonstrations" of some (pointed out) "commitment" is neither fair nor a demonstration by one (or more) that they understand all that is concerned in the production of such performance and results which they are then demanding of another to whom they factually need to be explaining in a clear, detailed and understood manner, what needs to be done to obtain the desired/needed and wanted future result/results. It's almost an offensive (certainly a psychically hurtful) statement (thing to say); a pre-shovelling of all and any blame to come--onto the feet of the hapless player/players or team. "Hapless" because most footballers are not the "masters of their own destiny". They do not have the full knowledge (and experience, but, this is an "over-used word". People never know what they mean when they use it, so, neither does the listener--he knows it is a "passing of the buck" but, onto him!) to analytically, "knowingly", "with open eyes and full understanding" ... footballers do not have the ability to direct or drive their own performances, never mind the team as a whole's performance, to achieve with certainty, manager or fan or club required desired results and performances. [Now, go to Part Two, please.]

Yes the penalty against Saliba was not a penalty but the whole discussion avoids the central issue that Arsenal have: not being able to score against teams that park the bus (Everton) or more than once against teams that play and are actually good (Brighton). Many teams have already brought in players they need, but Arsenal won't which makes one better understand why Edu left.

Man Utd don't lack effort for the most part, but when you don't know exactly what you are doing or what your team unit is doing it affects your intuition. Those extra 0.5 seconds of thinking are the difference in outcomes at the top level. Amorim already said in an interview he wants the players to think less and that will take time to be able to do. 2 months is nothing.

Gary in cricket the players on the pitch take the review without any outside influence. In football the bench will see the replay and tell the captain when to take the var call or not

Love the pod but a little disappointed they spent the entire Brighton-Arsenal segment talking about VAR. No mention of Brighton stopping Arsenal from having any shots at all in the second half, or Arsenal timewasting in the first half when they went up. Neither of those are things title challengers are supposed to do against a team like us.

Video evidence works much better in cricket and rugby. Lineker and the others are right that too many VAR decisions are so marginal. As a Forest fan I was disappointed with a VAR decision to exclude a goal against Villa as a single leg of an attacker was ahead of the last defender. That was impossible to detect with the naked eye.

Saliba makes contact with Pedro before the ball proceeds to bounce on the back of his head. This is a clear penalty by the letter of the law. Whether it was deliberate or inadvertent is also irrelevant.

As an Ipswich fan again really frustrated. Yesterday, Bournemouth, Brentford, Leicester, should have taken 12 points and took just 2. McKenna setting us up to get points but individual errors killing us. We are still in the fight hopefully we get to 2 or 3 games left and still there with the chance for survival.

I'm still fuming so my opinions are still heated but how does a scouser play like that against United? Amad looked like he cared more than Trent and he's not even English, let alone a Manc. Getting beat 1v1 isnt what annoys me, its the effort after that annoys me, just joggjng back. Genuinely curious how he thinks Madrid fans will react when he plays like that, he'll be getting booed off every game.

The whole “it’s a howler. It’s not enough” all that bollocks is what makes it so much harder. Get rid of the grey area and make it very simple, it’s either the correct decision or not. It’s a foul or it’s not. A foul is a foul

regarding VAR: shouldit be like in rugby where the Referee requests VAR for a spacific point for them to look at. Other than that VAR will only get involved if there is a serious potential sending off offence caused, This way the referee remains the only authority in the game, as it should be

Saliba touched the ball because Pedro got to it first and it brushed off Saliba's head in the process. I'm pretty sure Arsenal got a pen v Brighton last season where Lamptey got a touch on the ball but he wiped out Jesus so it was still a pen. Can't believe they spent so long talking about that and no one refuted Saliba getting a touch on it.
