Riquelme was my favorite player of all time. I watched him play many times alive and I thought the world of football was over when he left Boca for the 1st time. I remember skipping school so I could listen to the Intercontinental game vs Madrid on the radio since it was mid morning. Thank you Roman for what you brought to my world!

For some reason Román is the closest player to Zidane’s style of play. Slow zero pace with tactical dribbling ability & a brilliant footballing brain with unbelievable vision on the field. Can dissect a whole team with one killer through ball pass while standing looking disinterested for less than couple seconds. A set piece specialist from a direct/indirect free kicks & cheeky corners. Both footed with good long range shooting power type goals. Juan Román Riquelme is arguable the greatest Boca Juniors player of all time if we agree that El Diego belonged to Napoli ?

Yeah world class that Argentinan team in 2006 in Germany I watched him live in that quarter final argentina were the best team in the tournament he was the best player peckerman made a huge mistake tactically to take him off he controlled and bossed the game he was the kind of player that controlled the tempo of the game a true artist.

@@kadarabdi90 couldn’t agree more as I was back then thinking the same & believed Riquelme was player of the tournament & pulling the strings before Zizou flourished & got the award. Haven’t not been substituted by Jose Pekerman did the biggest mistake of the tournament by not only taking off the leader/player of the tournament but also didn’t introduce young sensation teenage Messi to toy with the German defence & win the game🙄

Hit the nail right on the head! Roman is criminally underrated. When people talk about the greatest number 10 in Argentina, people forget about this man. Such a shame that he never got the recognition he deserved when playing.

Thought it amazing, too. Not that I know all the facts, but I do like the unjudging voice that let's you decide for yourself. It's not that simple, of course, thanks to rhetorical trickery, but I think it's a job well done. Giving credit where it's due, focusing on the football than anything else!!

@Stephen Greenhorn however, the game was changing to a more fast paced, defensive-minded way. Juan Roman is the last true 10, but could not fit to the new playing styre, nor did he want to do so. Maybe the main reason he only had a couple of good years in Europe, while being the king of America. Being a 10 is more abundant there.

A very old fashioned phrase in football is the best way I can think to describe a player who even during his career seemed like a very old fashioned type of genius and that phrase is that he is a player I would have paid good money to watch. There will never be another like him again, because a player like him simply would not make it to the professional game these days. The best I've probably ever seen at slowing a game down to the pace that he wanted to play it at. Truly the last of his kind and sadly misunderstood by many particularly here in Europe.

Since i've been watching football i have never seen a player before or since that played like Roman. A genius at control and protecting the ball, not even Zidane (the closest i can think of) played like him. A true one-off and a joy to watch.

He never won a world cup or copa, so these kinds of players often go into obscurity. Baggio and Riquelme were two players who sat on Zidane's talent level in my opinion, but by never winning major titles or playing in CL/for a big team they just fade into memory of football connoisseurs. I've never seen a player like Riquelme who you simply could not get the ball off of.

I think one of the reasons I find myself slowly falling out of love with football, is the lack of pure creativity you see from Riquelme. If you’re not an elite athlete these days you’re discarded no matter how much skill you possess. Take me back to the 00’s when it seemed every side had someone who could put their foot on the ball and create magic. Just discovered your channel, excellent work! Appreciate the amount of work and research it must take to find relevant footage.

I think of Riquelme as a player who had a great "radar". He didn't need pace because he could immediately sense any player closing him down from all angles as well as picking perfect long distance passes. The Bulgarian Yordan Letchkov was similar. Slow speed but a great football brain.

I don't know about the whole "not reaching the next level". You've got to understand that plenty of us don't really care about European football. For many South Americans La Copa Libertadores is greater than the Champions League, and our favourite club comes first (sometimes, even before the National team). Riquelme did everything for Boca. Riquelme is Boca. That is more than enough.

explains the celebration Messi did on Louis van Gaal....it was for Riquelme. Justice served

Many Argentines were likened to Maradona not just Riquelme. Ortega, Aimar and Saviola are just some who were said to be the new Maradona, all incredible players in their own right.

Loads of young Argentines were called the next Maradona. Apart from Messi and Riquelme, I remember Ortega, Saviola, Gallardo, Aimar and d'Alessandro also being called that. If you were promising, Argentinian and could play as a 10 then someone would proclaim you the next Maradona. Only Messi has matched him but that's a high bar for anyone so no shame in others not reaching that level. Argentina have had some incredible players.
