Ranking The Halloween Films | SPOOKY SPOT 2017

1: Best) Halloween (1978): It is a horror classic. One that notably popularized the slasher subgenre of horror and spawned several imitators. I can watch this at any time and to this day it still gives me chills. The cinematography is extremely well done, Michael Myers is an effective villain, the acting has aged a bit but for the most part it still holds up and of course there's that score by John Carpenter. It really is the best. 2) Halloween (2018): Yep, this is going pretty high. This was a film I remember being excited for... but also extremely concerned. Halloween is one of those interesting franchises where to be quite frank? Most of the sequels aren't that good and feel extremely unnecessary and when coupled with what happened to the franchise with films like the Rob Zombie remakes and Resurrection? I've been of the opinion for most of the 2010s that Michael needed to be laid to rest and so when it was announced we'd get a new film in 2018? I had reservations... and then the movie came out and from the opening credits onward? I was hooked. With the choice to ignore everything except for the first film? It did something bold and for some people I understand the disappointment for it but I have to say, I'm glad they did it. With all that erased, it helped to return Michael Myers to being exactly how John Carpenter envisioned him in the original film. He is not a man but a mere shape, a soulless monster who kills without any remorse and for that matter, pleasure. He's a psychopath through and through. I also love how Laurie Strode became a sort of Sarah Connor-like character and that the film does what horror doesn't seem to get these days and that's putting the focus on some genuinely likable people who you don't want to see murdered which are backed by great performances. The direction is also solid, the music is great and it ends in a way where it's the perfect conclusion for the series while also providing a good jumping off point for the sequel. 3) Halloween H20: This is pretty high but I can explain. H20 of course was pretty much the 2018 film of its year except instead of ignoring everything except for the first it ignores everything except for the first and Halloween II, basically acting like a sort of third Halloween that actually had Michael Myers and really it works quite well. It's a movie that came out post-Scream so of course there's quite a bit here that reflects that and like that film, it doesn't forget its horror roots and knows how to be pretty damn scary. The acting is great in it, Michael is intimidating, there's plenty of good tension and the music while at times being inappropriate in terms of timing is pretty good. It's not the best film and in some respects it has dated but overall it's still a fun romp. 4) Halloween III: Season of the Witch: Obvious out of the way first, it of course doesn't have Michael Myers but honestly? This is a great movie and it really only suffers because of its name. Had this film either just dropped the three or the Halloween name? This would've been much more accepted in my eyes which would've been great. The atmosphere is great, the acting on display is nice, I love the music, the villains and the plot, it's all so unique and well done. 5) Halloween II (1981): Oh boy this will be controversial. Yep, I don't really like the original Halloween II. Now to be fair, it has its moments and is still a fun watch. It's cool to see it continue on from the same night as the original Halloween, I like the hospital setting, Michael is still scary, the kills rock and it has a great ending that would've been amazing as the conclusion to Michael's story... but it also has quite a few problems. It trades in tension and suspense for instance for more bloodshed and nudity which to me doesn't fit Halloween, there are tons of ridiculous moments like the scene with Ben Tramer and I just gotta say it. I was not at all a fan of the big twist and felt it was just a cheap and tacky way to give Michael more depth. It really doesn't do a lot for me. 6) Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers: This movie is fun. Is it good? Just gonna be up front about this, it's not really. For the most part it's basically the first film again with one twist at the end and different kills but all in all, it's still a fun time. For a film that aimed to win back crowds after III? It did in my opinion what it set out to do and gave us more Michael and it's in a film with good music, good atmosphere and some great acting from people such as Danielle Harris and many others. 7) Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers: Film stinks. Just gonna be upfront about that. While it has some fun kills, great gore effects and Danielle Harris and Donald Pleasance being awesome? Nothing else really saves this. It's just a run-of-the-mill Halloween sequel all things considered. 8) Halloween (2007): This film has sort of grown on me over the years but that isn't really saying much. Rob Zombie's Halloween, to give it credit is a brand new take on the franchise and one he made his own which I can greatly respect... it's just a shame that's all I can say because WOW this movie was terrible. This remake to me commits the biggest sin a horror remake could manage and that's demystify the killer. The whole first half of the movie to me is not only boring but it also shows too much of Michael and when coupled with how the family and quite a few other characters are quite frankly the most stereotypically... Rob Zombie-type group I've ever seen? I stopped being afraid of Michael and wanted him to kill them all. Speaking of killing, while it provides some enjoyable kills? It trades in suspense and tension in favor of senseless excessive gore. Doesn't matter if it's the director's cut or the theatrical version, I can't stand this movie. 9) Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers: I'm gonna cheat and put both cuts because really, nothing enhances this movie's quality really. While the producer's cut fixes some parts of the theatrical version by providing more explanations, having more suspense and actually following through on this cult storyline regardless of how stupid it is? It still has that stupid cult storyline, it has the ugly friggin' rape idea included and it overall is still the same terrible movie, it's just one is a more coherent terrible while the other makes you question what drugs the staff were on. 10) Halloween II (2009): I just can't with this movie. On the one hand, Rob Zombie at the very least did something original and unique for the sequel, I will grant him that and there are concepts I like such as how Michael's mask is rotting away and his change in apparel but dear lord do I just hate this movie. Regardless of the cut, this is a confusing pretentious slog that in my honest opinion doesn't feel even remotely like Halloween. 11: Worst) Halloween Resurrection: Screw this movie, screw this movie, screw. This. Movie! To kick things off, I have a beef with how this film completely undoes the great ending of H20. It's cheap, contrived and it reeks of a studio desperate to milk for cash. Next off, I absolutely can't stand the ideas this movie presents since it's so unnecessary and foolish and then there's the Busta Rhymes bit and right then and there I clocked out of the movie. It's just insufferable.

Halloween Resurrection and Halloween 2 Remake are the kinds of movies you see in the theater that halfway through leaves you plotting your escape through the closest emergency exit to avoid the embarrassment of showing your face in the theater lobby. One thing that is weird to me. I can't even make it through rewatching Rob Zombie's Halloween remake, but I've watched the 4 HOUR, yes 4 HOUR, making of documentary for it several times. I really enjoy it. Killing off Rachel in H5 was reboot suicide for the Halloween series.

I like Halloween III, I thought they should've tied this into the Michael Myers mythos, it would give a kind of reason why Michael is always coming back, like he got hold of an experimental mask from Shamrock, so it wouldn't discount that he was a psychotic but would give an explanation for what makes him supernatural.

Number three Rob Zombie's Halloween H2 I love Michael Myers in this Michael one of us brutal cinematography was amazing and most of the active performances were good number 2 Halloween 4 Michael Myers is great Jamie was amazing All actors were great in the storyline was great number one Halloween 6 the Curse of Michael Myers This Michael Myers is the most brutal he has ever been this movie goes by super quick third Act is amazing and you cannot mention this film without mentioning the great soundtrack especially the main theme and and full Shine On both of those tracks are some of the best music I have ever heard in this entire series and also extremely rewatchable and that's a big factor for me but anyways have an amazing day

It's really just too hard for me to make a list of my favorite Halloween movies but Halloween 3 has been my go to movie for Halloween night surprisingly. You seem to really like part four of a lot of the horror movies.

I look at the Halloween series as I do the Legend of Zelda series. We have the same central characters, heroes villains and settings but almost NONE are related to each other. Except the rare one or two games that connect. It’s like a Legend or Folk tale that’s told over time and varies differently between retellings. I don’t look at all the films being connected. There’s the first telling of Halloween and Halloween 2. Then Halloween 4 and 5. Then 6. Then H2O and Resurrection. Then the remake 1 and 2. And now finally Halloween and Halloween (original and most recent). It’s just a tale retold and changed over time from retellings.

Least to most favorite: Halloween 2 (2009) Halloween (2007) Halloween: Resurrection Halloween H2O Halloween 5: Revenge of Michael Meyers Halloween 4: Return of Michael Meyers Halloween 2 Halloween Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers Halloween 3 My final 4 are only ones I rewatch on a regular basis. Of course, 1& 2 are classics, but I love 3 for the pure strangeness of it. As for Curse, I wish I could edit together the 2 versions together. The Producer's Cut flows better, but the ending is so much weaker than the theatrical version. H2O is so low on my list because, well, Michael Meyers comes off as a bit of a chump. It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember Michael getting his ass kicked throughout the film. And the Rob Zombie movies are just awful.

My system for ranking the Halloween films is a bit different from most. For starters, I leave Season of the Witch of the list completely. I enjoy it for what it is, and I think it's a great classic slasher romp. I think it might have been far better received had they just dropped the "Halloween" from the title and just called it "Season of the Witch". Also, I separate the Theatrical Cuts from the Director's Cuts when it comes to Zombie's outings. For many reasons, they come off as completely different films from one another to me, so they each get their own separate entries. I apply the same ideology to Halloween 6 as well. This brings my list count to 13 (minus one, plus three). That said, my list is as follows: 13. Halloween Resurrection (even with new additions to the list, it's still the worst to me LOL) 12. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers 11. Rob Zombie's Halloween II (Director's Cut) 10. Rob Zombie's Halloween (Director's Cut) 9. Rob Zombie's Halloween (Theatrical Cut) 8. Literally everything in this movie capital S SUCKS! #10: Halloween: Resurrection: This movies only saving grace is the scene where Busta Rhymes just bossed Micheal Myers around. #9: Rob Zombie's Halloween: The first remake was a very interesting movie, but the only thing that is bogged down by trying to give Myers a horrible backstory. #8: Halloween 4: The Return of Micheal Myers: The mask. That is the only thing I need to say. THAT FU**ING MASK!!! #7: Halloween 2018: This movie is one of the best Myers ones I've every seen, but the family drama was a little too much for me. #6: Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers: This movie was a bit more fun then the others. Also, I hate the Curse of Thorn. I just hate it. #5: Halloween 3: Season of the Witch: Hey, I appreciate the franchise doing something different. #4: Halloween ll: This movie was just a little too slow for my taste. It was also an okay follow up to a cult classic. #3: Rob Zombie's Halloween ll: This is just really fast paced movie, and was a great experience overall. #2: Halloween 1978: The original just did not age to well. Back in '78, I bet it was just awesome, but now it is a little wonky. #1: Halloween H20: Just the best. Its only hiccup is not having Jamie return as Laurie's daughter. Like, wow.

Also; I agree. I hate rape-scenes, especially if it's not necessary. But I disagree on gore. One of the most memorable elements of the original movie was the fact that it WAS so bloodless. It's a masterpiece of minimalist-horror.

The fact that Mike Myers has a dysfunctional family in Rob's movie has 0 to do with him being a sociopathic murderer, Zombi was just showing us a different family dynamic, his mother still showed him a lot of love and attention, yet Mike still was what he was, killing animals and then on to people. I think Rob Zombi told an amazing story and people were drawing the wrong conclusions on a lot of the plot.

Zombie told the story of how external enabling triggers can cause someone to finally snap. Carpenter told it as Michael being a normal boy who simply was evil inside without anything externally affecting him. Zombie wanted to pose the question to the viewers, if you had enough enablers horrible people and conditions around you, would you go down the same road that Michael did, there was intention for his Stepfather to be a slimeball, his mother a stripper, his sister a whore and being bullied at school...it accumulated to the point where the switch in Michael turned on and he didn't snap but he channeled his inner rage killing those around him, not remembering anything happening afterwards

My ranking from worst to best: 13th: Rob Zombie 2 Halloween (The only good part about this movie is the dream sequence, that’s it. This movie sucked balls) 12th: Halloween Ends (This movie is pointless but I do like the fight between Laurie and Michael in the end and Michael’s death but that’s really all I can say that’s good) 11th: Halloween Resurrection (I don’t mind the live show part but when Laurie got killed in the dumbest way possible pissed the f**k out of me) 10th: Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch (Not great, but not bad either) 9th: Halloween 5 The Revenge Of Michael Myers (Killing off Rachel in the beginning is stupid, but I find the movie to be pretty good) 8th: Rob Zombie Halloween 1 (Not a great construction of Michael’s character but I love Michael’s size in this movie) 7th: Halloween 6 The Curse Of Michael Myers (I love this movie’s t. cut more than the p. Cut, because I don’t like seeing Michael as a pawn, and I absolutely love the smith’s grove scenes in the t. Cut. It’s scary, intense, epic music and atmosphere and mostly, Michael Myers since he’s a monster in this movie) 6th: Halloween Kills (Like Curse, Michael in this movie is an absolute badass monster with an absolute badass design. It’s very good and I don’t care what you say about this movie but this movie is amazing) 5th: Halloween 2 (A great sequel, and especially the music. The music is honestly the best out of any in the franchise. The kills are very gruesome and it has definitely the best ending to any Halloween movie) 4th: Halloween H20 (Say what you want about the music but I loved the music and especially the credits. It’s epically orchestrated in a very gloomy way and Dr. Loomis’s quote echoes through it. My flaw is the 3 masks in this movie, especially the KNB one it sucks so much like it’s made from Area 51 or something. The CGI mask sucked balls too) 3rd: Halloween 2018 (There’s really nothing I can say that’s bad about this movie, I just find the last two to be a slight better) 2nd: Halloween 4 The Return Of Michael Myers (This movie is perfect from top to bottom. But the two mask in this movie aren’t great but really it’s a minor issue and besides the music and atmosphere made the masks looked creepy) 1st: Halloween (Ofc it’s the best)

I too was going to try and watch all the Halloween movies this year starting with the original but I only made it thru Halloween 1. Last year when I bought this set I watched all the movies ending with Rob Zombies terrible remakes. I think next year I am going to start with the remakes and watch the films in reverse order so I can end with a good movie.

Brilliant, interesting video. I agree with ALOT of your points here. For the first time ever, I managed to watch all 10 this Halloween and I absolutely love 4 (atmosphere is perfect) and for some reason am drawn to Halloween 6 like you are. Halloween 5 is better than I remember but still not great. Halloween 3 is so unique , I always enjoy it. Resurrection has zero redeeming features. Hate that film. RZ H2 is just nasty and ugly although I always enjoyed Halloween 2007 except that disgusting rape which I fast forward everytime. Halloween is a classic, H20 is great but almost too warn and cosy. Its a tame horror film and you're 100% spot on about Halloween 2. It has serious pacing issues.

Least to fav 11. RZ H2 - saw it twice; Once in theatres and it sucked and then again when i got this 15 disc boxset to remind myself why i didnt like it. Never watching it again. 10. H ressurection - I actually tolerate this crap BECAUSE of Busta rhymes, lol 9. H5 - I enjoyed H5 alot back in the day, but now its just meh. Donald pleasence makes it watchable. Love dr loomis in this tho. 8. H 2018 - decent, but hate that it does not count H2... 7. H4 - I like this film, but the mask is horrible for me. It keeps me from enjoying the movie more. 6. H20 - first halloween movie i ever saw. During that time the 'Scream' moviea were big and it reminded me of the Scream movies. So it was enjoyable. 5. RZ H1- I saw it in theatres and i must say i liked this film overall. It felt like a remake, but i didnt care for this white trailer trash upbringing, but it made sense.... 4. H3 - i never gave this film a chance, and i regret it. This was a good halloween(as far as the season)movie! Just shouldnt have made it a sequel of the franchise. 3. H6 - theatrical cut was legit scary for me at one time. Infact i thought it was the scariest one. Didnt care for the DC version. Sure gives more info, but gore is cut too much. 2. H1 - the classic. Best myers( mask, motion, whole 9) because its the standard all others have to meet and well...havent. Only issue is pacing and kills weren't all that, but i enjoy the fact that just when u think they got him, he keeps coming back. 1. H2 - probably my fav. It continues right after h1 and it establjshes fully that myers is not human and he now just appears that way from his walk, his kills etc. Both theatrical and tv cuts need to be put into one. I watch H1 and H2 back to back.

This has been my sentiments for the longest time about Halloween Resurrection. I felt that they cut too many corners, it was cheaply made. Make no mistake, there are many great horror films that were made on a shoe string budget. In the case of Halloween Resurrection, the execution of it was poor.

ANd to be fair the whole Myers was decapitated thing? That was going to happen all the way back when H20 was made. It was planned from the beginning ya know? No bs. They didn't want to kill Myers. Jamie Lee actually asked them not to show that till Resurrection because she wanted it to seem like she finally beat Myers. But yeh, not added after the fact. Was in the original H20 script.
