The Right Opinion I wanted to share an experience I watched my cousin go through. My cousin C has always been beyond smart I mean doggie howser type of smart and he like the rest of our family come from hard working middle class type of family environment and his older brother A had very serious physical health and mental health issues (he was cognitively delayed and pretty much a 3 year old in an adult body) and C had to care for his brother while going to school and when he was in high school he was busting his behind even more he was working, going to school and being involved in many of the honor society type of things all while still caring for his brother while his mom and dad worked to care for the family’s financial needs. So, one day something happened and A took off on my uncle and C and he wound up literally biting someone’s ear almost completely off... which was very very bad for all involved thankfully the victim was understanding and way way more compassionate and forgiving than 98% of the population would be. That incident led to my aunt and uncle making the hardest decision they’ve ever had to make and that was to essentially put A in an institution for the severely disabled and whatnot. So, after that life slowly regained some normalcy and C continued to excel in school and he graduated top of his class. He had received a scholarship to the undergrad school he had wanted to attend for as long as I can remember and again he excelled at it and he graduated again at the top of his class. Next up med school, he applied to our state universities so he could be close to home and a few others and this was around the time universities were being pressured into being more “diverse” which meant admitting immigrant students who while of course if they are qualified and will make it through the rigorous coursework by all means admit them to attend the school but the fact that so many were simply let in so the schools wouldn’t catch any flak for not being “diverse enough” which while I can understand making schools more diverse again admissions should be based on merit and nothing more. My cousin C who deserves to be admitted to those schools for the insanely hard work he put in and the other amazing things that made him more than worthy but, did he get accepted? To one he did but he had zero scholarship opportunities and for us normal families who aren’t rich medical school is insanely expensive and grants of some sort on top of loans are usually needed and to say to my cousin that he’d have to pay out of pocket to attend blew my mind. The other university didn’t have room in their program supposedly which sucked but he didn’t give up. He worked his butt off until he found a school he could attend and obtain his degree and the only thing was...it was out of the states and located on a Caribbean island! It was fully accredited by the American medical association and it was affordable for him and he went down there and he had an amazing time and he got his degree as a Physicians assistant and he’s worked in that capacity long enough to pay off his debts and to take care of his mom and dad as well as A. He’s now in the process of finishing his education and getting his MD. It’s ridiculous that people like my cousin who deserve to be at these schools are being denied due to whatever idiotic reason that works at the time be it diversifying or whatever but being bribed to let these unqualified entitled rich kids in so they can get the accolades they didn’t earn simply because mommy and daddy are rich is just gross and brings shame to the whole education system in this country. It’s gross

Well, most of the schools weren't bribed directly as we know. It was more the guy who does the scouting and SAT which is just one employee that took the bribes. Some of them he messed with their records to make their SAT scores higher or lied about them being on a sports team. With that said, it definitely shows that schools need a far better fact-checker on those things and should have multiple people handle scouting. A lot of those prestigious schools though most likely knew about it as it's very common for rich parents to give generous donations right when college application season starts to get the family name recognizable.

as an American and a college student in Los Angeles, I can tell you that’s it’s pretty common to find people at USC that only attend because their parents donated. USC is a great university yes, but a lot of what makes it great is the fact that it’s wildly expensive, and they let generation after generation of rich kids buy their way in. For us U.S. college students, this scandal wasn’t a surprise at all, it was just a confirmation of what we knew before. It’s nice to see it getting some attention but the truth is that it has happened since the beginning and will keep happening. Money has a way of greasing even the most resistant palms given the right opportunity.

Agreed. I think the only reason this blew up is they didn't bribe the University directly with 'donations'. They used a back door way of bribing. In a way it's been a bit of a God send for the Universities because now they can all look horrified that anyone would do such a thing. That they've got their own version of the same thing makes them hypocrites but when did that ever matter?

The thing that was pretty much common knowledge was donations to universities, like money to build a library or whatever. And while it’s totally unfair, it’s not illegal, just immoral. This scandal of bribing is illegal and can be punished by the law, which is why it’s such a big deal. With a donation to the school and not a specific person in the school, there was no tangible evidence, that could be used in a lawsuit, that it was illegal, because it’s not. I tried to get a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2016. I did a summer music program that had international students from all over the globe. I worked very hard and made it into the jazz choir (with a solo) and was in the top 10 out of 80 finalists (180 applicants total) of a singer/songwriter competition. And I didn't get a scholarship. However, there was a suspicious majority of students who were awarded generous scholarships from a small town in my state, which also happens to be the same state where Berklee resides in. A lot of people were commenting on this because it became fairly obvious fairly quickly that somebody pulled some strings and there was nothing anyone was going to about it. This was an INTERNATIONAL program but some of the most talented individuals just HAPPENED to be locals? It was really suspicious and an extremely crushing blow. Colleges can be extremely political and when news of this came out, I wasn't the least bit surprised.

Another point to make - when you get a degree, you want it to mean something. You want it to represent the hard work you put in to obtain it. People can't see all those years of hard work you put in to it, but they can see this certification in the form of a degree as proof that you did just that. And when they see that degree on your wall, they can have confidence in what it represents about you. But if too many people get away w/basically buying a degree from a well regarded university, then everyone else who has that degree now has a meaningless piece of paper as far as the world is concerned, because people at large will have no confidence that it was earned the hard way. So it hurts everyone who has gone to, is going to, or will go to that university. It makes accreditation of a university meaningless. It puts your university closer to being on par w/a degree mill, if only a more expensive one. If I ran a university i'd be merciless in going after such scams for the sake of protecting the value of the degrees earned by those that actually work for them. Now, if someone wants to donate millions to the university to build a new school of architecture building, sure, that can help the university and its students by quite a lot, so by all means give them some goodies, like access to your facilities, season tickets to college football in a special donor's box, or even an honorary degree - as its very name shows the world it wasn't earned the normal way so there's no fraud on the public there, but don't sully the very meaning of what an actual degree from your school is supposed to represent by giving admittance to someone who hasn't earned it.
@jacobrandall48915 жыл бұрын
I may be in the minority, but the problem solving/ time management / anxiety management skills trump in priority over the degree. a lot of people in my engineering class just try to get by with a 2.0 GPA, yet get the same piece of paper that I do at the end
@louloudaki_ Жыл бұрын
yea and getting degrees through these means is pointless because degrees are something jobs (especially in stem) look at, so it would be fairly obvious to coworkers that you don’t know what you’re doing if you didn’t work for your degree because you don’t understand what’s happening and are wasting everyone’s time

I don't think she had any purposeful ill intentions with this. You said it well- she's used to being given things, no questions asked. So she probably figured that she'd go along with it, get the degree to keep her parents off her back, and then keep getting her allowance from them. Since when was rich people “donating” to colleges and having their children *mægįçåłï* get into that same college a surprise
@slimkt5 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is: at least here in the states, most of us already were well aware that rich kids’ parents bought their way into prestigious colleges. The only reason this case is news is that instead of ‘donating’ to the university upfront, they took a route through the back-door. It was honestly more surprising that this was considered newsworthy than to learn it actually happened. It’s sad, but this’ll go away eventually and the tradition of trustfund kids getting their degrees bought for them by their parents will continue.

I emphasize with you and relate to you greatly. I made it to the final waitlist at a prestigious university only to get rejected at the last second (a "student athlete" from my graduating class got in, his mom had connections.... hmmm...). At the time, it made me very bitter (and I'm still slightly bitter about it, to be honest). I really believe university admissions need to be equal for every candidate, whether you're an athlete or an ordinary student, or whether your parents are millionaires. I also believe universities, especially admission officers, need to be held more accountable. It is infuriating when all throughout high school we're working hard and preparing for university (admissions), only to lose to someone who had the connections. Thank you for making a video on this topic.

The argument against kicking everyone out could be that the students weren't a part of the bribery. If you applied and worked hard to get in, but never knew it was because your parents bribed, then it's them getting punished for something they had no part in, especially if they could of gotten in on their own merits. "So with all that talent in her genes, she must have success running through her veins." Actually genetics forbids this. In biology (and statistics) there is a phenomenon called "regression to a mean". Broadly speaking it means that when two very tall people breed, on average their children will be shorter than them and the other way around. Similarly if two people with what society interprets as high intelligence breed, on average their offspring will be less intelligent. It is not 100% known what exactly causes this to happen, but one of the most watertight theories so far suggest that it may be because some genes that would be responsible for someone "being tall" don't "stack" so to speak and instead sort of cancel each other out. It's actually way more complicated than that, but this is essentially why eugenics is a crapshoot. Fun fact: regression to a mean in biology was discovered by a fellow called Francis Galton, a huge classist, racist, misogynist and all around arsehole, who actually coined the term "eugenics" and so is widely considered the founding father of one of the most harmful pseudosciences ever conceived by man, as he incidentally was trying to prove the exact opposite. Get fucked, eugenicists.

I just recently found your channel with the video about Channel Awesome as I was browsing KZbin for history videos about what had happen to ProJared recently. I must say the research and editing you do are fantastic and as a man closer to my 30's I find KZbin history weirdly fascinating as most of us have watched the rise and fall of many channels ( due to various reasons) and adding context behind them that isn't just DRAMA is very entertaining and refreshing. Keep up the good work TRO, you have my sub!

You made some really good points here. Olivia Jade was presenting this chill vibe, trying to act like, "I'm just like you guys, but I happen to have rich parents." But they were illegally buying her an image that was false. I personally think Olivia Jade and her sister are victims in this. Olivia didn't even want to go, had a whole future carved out for herself outside of college already. They have ruined that for her. Her parents should do time, but not the children. I hope the girls can recover because they seem sweet from what I've seen on Olivia's youtube channel.

My theory is that she knew about this, and told them she didn't want to go to college but she didn't want to argue with her parents. What you see on the outside is completely different on the inside. Maybe her parents are somewhat narcissists or are very stubborn, who knows? Maybe they are forcing her into college. When I told my parents that I don't want to go to college (because there is no course for me anywhere nearby, long story), my own dad was kinda pissed, ''what do you mean you don't want to go to college?! You NEED to have an education!''

She didn't want to go. Her parents felt insecure because none of them have a degree, so they made their daughters go to university

I think it’s cause of her parents. People think you have to go to college. While the “she wants to party” is a good argument, you can easily attend college parties if you have friends in college, especially if you’re famous lol

Yknow, this wouldn't be a problem, if societies weren't programmed to consider people based on their diplomas, and bureaucratic "qualifications", and were instead just considered by the content of their character, and the observable capacity of their skills. If the latter were the case, this wouldn't be a problem. This would just be a family that wasted 500K dollars.

I don't blame anyone for becoming "annoyed" when they haven't got the golden spoon start some of these people do. And I doubt she was utterly complicit, but I do agree she must have known about at least a part of it. With that out of the way. I'm a 32 year old male from Europe, in a country that just voted to leave the EU (GB). Here, they are forced to pay me more due to my age if they hire me, than the fresh-faced but equally inexperienced 20~year old fresh out of whatever. I have not had a job in 3,5 years. It has lead to tremendous emotional anguish as an alive but incapable adult. I have been a burden to my loves ones for *years* because I simply can't get a job. Naturally, I *hate* that I don't have a job. Or, I used to. I don't think there's a possibility I will ever get hired for a traditional job any more. My last chance at creating something, I decided, was my Twitch streaming. If I am going to be a miserable fuck offline, I want to at least make a neat little place for people to enjoy themselves on. I don't badger people for follows or subs or bits (donations), but I do welcome them and chat with them. I grew up fairly poor, entertainment was almost always pirated, so I understand that we seek entertainment, and I don't want to be some shitbag who gates that off - despite - yes - needing that income. The world and people have done a lot to me to harm me, to leave scars that make who I am a bit - and some times a lot - worse. But I decided I want to entertain people and carry myself well. No drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes. I won't lie to someone to make them feel good, I won't put someone to my foot to stand on their back and reach a ladder that way. And I stream every freaking day. Maybe I'm not very good, I know my production isn't super professional, but this is the only path available to me, I feel like. And because of that, I have to keep trying. You have to believe in what you do to get the most of it. So for me to see these people with 0 care from the second they were born engage in this kind of shit is just the worst thing. Sometimes for my efforts and hard work, I got badly shat on. As was said, this hardly fair, but as much as I want to, telling people who run at you screaming and then block you when they get a jab in isn't really a way to do it. And yet, we need "ugly" people like those featured in the video, too. You can look to a moral guardian, a superhero, or a good girl\boy for how to be, and draw inspiration from it. But you can also look at the festering evil - the greed, the sleaze - and make a promise to yourself not to be this way. We have to be better.

I feel this FURY personally bc I was accepted into a prestigious school but I couldn’t go bc I couldn’t afford the tuition. Only to find out that the financial aid office at the school embezzled over a MILLION dollars in tuition funds. I was so mad and my parents were mad at me for not getting a full ride. All this mental anguish and ruining people’s futures so someone can have the money for a new car or go on a vacation. 😡

The fact that she says she doesn’t really care about school, it was as if she was twisting a knife in the side of more deserving people. So many people fight to have a good education, so when people like her say things like that, even without the bribing, it is disgusting. With the bribing it is astronomically worse.
