Nothing Beats Fresh Carrots From Your Garden! Easily one of my favorite crops to harvest, but how exactly do we know when they are ready to pull up? Carrots are unique in that they don't really need to ever ripen. As soon as the taproot colors up and swells, you can pick them....at all stages!
But if we're hoping for max size and mature carrot yields, how do we know when the carrots are truly ready? Well, in today's Quickie, I'll show you 3 signs that indicate that your carrots have reached maturity and are ready to pull! Enjoy.

I pulled one of my carrots grown in a container, and tops were at least 12 inches high. The carrot was very sweet, thickness about 3/4 " or more. So I plan to freeze the diced carrots. Am going to be happy with these carrots. 💖

I'm so happy to see you didn't overly thin your carrots. One year I did that and probably got rid of nearly half of my carrot crop. I also had more trouble with the current rust fly. I've heard when you thin and pull some of those carrots out that the scent goes in the air and draws them in.

100% correct! More space means more space for bugs and weeds. Took me years of trial and error to finally figure that out, LOL!

Omgersh Jeffe, thanks for another awesome and informative 🥕 quicky 😍I needed this one. I pulled one thinking that it was ready because the top was very long... nope, it was actually pretty small, but I still used it...because with carrots the size really doesn’t matter💗, as long as it’s orange, thanks Jeffe 🥕😘

Congrats on 500k subscribers Jeff! Great tips as always. I'm waiting for my Nantes variety carrots currently, 30cm of foliage but not much growth in the taproots. We've had a very wet and cold July and August in the UK so that's probably why they are slow to mature.

Patiently waiting on mine to grow some more . My rainbow carrots I am not holding much hope for, something has eaten all the foliage but left tall stems. Grow bags on raised legs and netted so have no idea who is having a midnight snack. Time will tell if these poor things will recover or not. Great video, I always follow the date first but still check for 'shoulders'.

@@sandyhayden-bristow1382 I found inch worms on my carrot tops last year. They are an inch long (hence the name). They are bright green and move about an inch at a time 3:11 hunching up between steps. Spinosad or BT should take care of them if that's what it is. Also they hide in the foliage, they're hard to find unless they are moving. Good luck.

I wait until a hard frost to harvest most of my carrots. I usually sow them as soon as the ground is workable, which is about mid-April for me. So my carrots are typically in the ground WAY longer than the maturity date, but I find them to be sweeter when I wait.

I have always liked to wait until the first frost or two.. they are much sweeter then. But this year, it looks as though the frost is a ways away and I have picked a few already and they jus aren’t as sweet. Will they last until the frost? Or do they start to get woody? Would they be ok in the ground until frost even tho they are mature to pick now?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
It can be a gamble. They definitely do get woody eventually.....some varieties last longer than others. Trial and error seems to be really the only way to know for sure unfortunately.
