This is by far the best way to grow carrots. I have been growing my carrots like this for years . One tip for everyone.For the best results growing in barrels or containers. Use carrot strip seeds .
@sherylsmiles141 Жыл бұрын
What are carrot strip seeds and where does one get them?? I guess I can goggle it. I have had several in-ground gardens with faster good results with many vegs, but was never able to grow carrots. Now I will be doing raised bed and barrels because I have dogs...I think I will give carrots one last try...

I get uneven results from raised beds. Even with same soil ingredients. I'll try containers next time.
@lindadelcamp6686 Жыл бұрын
@@sherylsmiles141 You can get them in garden store that sells seeds. They're called seed tapes and they have the seeds on a tape already separated far enough so you don't need to thin them out. You can make seed tapes by using strips of paper towels and white glue. Just place 1-2 seeds in drop of glue spaced far enough apart, about 2-3 inches. Then make small furrow in soil and place tape, cover up and keep watered till they sprout. Best thing is that you can cut tape to ANY LENGTH you want! I've been doing this for any small seeds like carrots, radishes and even lettuce! Hope this helps! 😂

Please do you apply fertilizer on your vegetables and fruits or they grow organically with only the manure ???

Everyone watching needs to consider that this is probably a tropical climate where they get good rain and their soil is most likely rich and not chemically treated. I'm still going to try this. It looks really good.

Interesting, I thought it said it was sand dirt mix, then cow dung, then sand dirt mix. That’s not great soil on its own. I’d be willing to bet that in NW Ohio I have better soil than that as stock soil in my backyard.
@tamarque17 ай бұрын
@@Andrew_Sherman cow manure is very rich in nutrients; the sand ensure the soil does not pack down around the carrots. They get deformed when having to force their way thru packed and/or rocky soil.
@Plasmafox3 ай бұрын
Carrots don't need rich soil, they love sandy soil because it drains fast and is easy for them to push down into. All growing soil is "chemically treated." Adding fertilizer is chemical treatment, even cow dung, you're adding chemicals like nitrogen that the plants need. The only likely difference is growing season and how much watering you have to do.
@GoGreenYes Жыл бұрын
When you grow carrots, soil should be a sandy loam; make sure it is well drained. Heavy soils cause the carrots to mature slower and the roots will end up unattractive and rough. Remember that when you grow carrots, soil should never be rocky because it leads to poor quality roots. Happy gardening🎉🎉

I agree. I tried various containers and the ground, and mine would grow to a small size and stop. I think I need looser soil. Also, I used starter cups, and the crowding was a problem.
@tacksscherbo7771 Жыл бұрын
And if your container isn't deep enough, as soon as the carrot root touches the bottom of the container, it causes many of the carrots to split in two and sometimes three roots!! Look for "home-made self-watering containers" for much better almost hands-free consistently moist soil! My inexpensive wicking buckets worked very well. 👍
@adriankap2978 Жыл бұрын
@@KishorTwist I just learned something about wicking buckets and just sharing in case you didn't know BUT you can get white food grade buckets from restaurants for free since they usually throw them away. It safer than the colored buckets like blue or orange. It not only saves money but it's healthier too. Try calling around to see if you can get a few or however many you want or need. Of course I'm just spouting off and get excited when I find out something new. Have fun growing.
@KishorTwist Жыл бұрын
@@adriankap2978During spring 2023, I actually asked two restaurants near my house and one said "oh we have some but we're using them for ourselves!" and the other said that they didn't have any. I did see buckets for trash pickup but I was too far from home to bring them back. At 5 CAD each at the hardware store, it's not that much of a wallet buster anyway. I gotta say that aesthetically, they aren't visually pleasing to look at! Some garden-themed wallpaper to wrap them around with or if one has artistic skills can make them look much better. I have to say my dozen buckets performed very well in 2023! An internet-suggested potting soil mix of _50% garden soil, 30% peat moss and 20% compost_ helped a lot compared to my early mix of virtually just peat moss (no nutrient). It's also much cheaper and fun to make than commercial bags! Next seasons will be even more gardenly awesome with I hope even more buckets! 👍💪🤝

After viewing this a second time, I recalled something I had read elsewhere a while ago. It then surprises me that only a couple of carrots had split roots. The article I remembered warned against planting carrots in too shallow a container because when the long tap root hit a barrier at the bottom, it caused the main root to split into sections. Perhaps harvesting them just at the right time prevented that happening.
@AJR-zg2py Жыл бұрын
That's exactly what happened here. He's probably been growing this variety of carrot for years in these containers and knows precisely when to pick them.
@Mantras-and-Mystics Жыл бұрын
Yes, the containers don't look very deep. How deep would you recommend?
@AJR-zg2py Жыл бұрын
@@Mantras-and-Mystics I have similar containers and they're deeper than you think. Just looking at them they're pretty much at least 12" deep - and honestly, that's plenty of space for carrots. Think of the average carrot you would buy from the store - not many reach 12" so a container that size would be perfect. Unless you need a bigger container where you're growing long and giant carrots for county fairs and agricultural contests, these containers are perfect for a long slender root veg such as a carrot :) Parsnips would be a good option too in these containers - they take FOREVER to grow (compared to carrots) and can be a bit temperamental to get germinated but they are worth it :)
@tacksscherbo7771 Жыл бұрын
@@Mantras-and-Mystics By now you would have received a reply that I, too, would have recommended. A 12 inch container is a safe bet. I would check the description of the carrot seeds to see how long the carrots would be, just to be on the safe side. Even in the field garden, my folks always chose a carrot that was not longer than six inches in the orange section, without regard for the tap root. This was because of the soil construction. There was a clay subsurface that was very irregular and messed up the carrot roots. But that's not going to be your problem with a deeper container. Good luck. Hope you have a successful harvest!

If you grow carrots in big containers do you need to have drainage holes in bottom? I'm going to try either the short variety or 6-8 inch one. Would I need drainage for the 6-8 inch? If you plant in July how long does it take before harvest?

you should still make drainage holes for your pot. If you plant in July, around October you can harvest carrots.

Some people have asked some good questions sir, why you don't answer? Like, the buckets has holes in it and do you water every day? Do you thin the carrots (which I am not sure what it means but I suppose do you take some mini plants out to leave some space for the others to grow)? My question is, only one seed every few cm/inches or two /three/few? Thank you if you can reply.

Thank you for helping me gather good questions. Here I will answer some of your questions. - Watering young, immature carrot shoots is done quite often every 2-3 days when it is hot. As the bushes grow, the frequency of watering is reduced: they are watered when the soil dries out, once every 4-5 days. - After 1 week, the seeds have germinated, and after a few more days you can prune the bad plants, leaving only 1 to 2 trees in each hole, to concentrate nutrients on the strongest plants. - To ensure good germination, you should sow 2 to 3 seeds per 1 cm. When they sprout well, you can prune them to plant elsewhere.

You've picked a good variety of carrot for container growing. Judging by the number of questions about the carrot seed, you would help many people by naming the carrot variety. I'd also like to know if you are growing these carrots in hot weather (Vietnam...summer?);

@@rosemaryus-ct6151 Hmm... are you being unkind? If you are it's unnecessary. Potatoes are a prime example of not having seeds, in the sense of the word.
