Zucchinis Are Best Grown Alone. I love companion planting and interspecies crop rotating, don't get me wrong. But not all plants play well with others and some are just an outright terrible choice for it.
Today, I got 3 reasons why you should never companion plant Zucchinis. Even though they are one of my favorite crops, these 3 huge drawbacks mean I always grow them by themselves.
It feels just like yesterday I started this series. Garden Quickies are hyper-focused 2 minute videos that tackle the most pressing growing questions of the day. I've compiled an entire playlist of them here, check it out!: • Garden Quickies

I planted zucchini by itself. It's away from the rest of the garden. Last year my neighbour put zucchini in with the raspberries, near the grape vines. Almost ruined all three because of the aphids and mildew. They are now growing zucchini in pots, away from most of the rest of the garden.

You sure are right about bully squash! Twice now I have had to trim back our Red Kuri winter squash vines in our No-Till garden. They wanted to take over three extra tomato plants and a third planting of beans. I stuck those tomatoes and beans where the squash has never traveled in the past three years. The darn things changed course this year. Some things you just can't count on lol! Enjoyed, take care!

Ahhhhh!!!!! I saw this too late, add yes some of my zucchini and squash have the beginnings of powdery mildew. I just planted one I traded for, it's well developed but looking a bit yellow. And a few of mine on blue boxes ( recycling repurposed) are to crowded and showing little white patches. Tried to get rid of them. Ok so why I'm commenting for is to say thank you. My husband and I are second year gardeners and didn't know to put these things by themselves. One is smack dab in the middle of the peas!!! I love my peas! Last year I lost a whole section of peas to powdery mildew at the back of my house near the tomatoes. Was that a bad idea too? Love these training videos, thanks a bunch and God bless.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
You're in the thick of it Wendy, I love it! Peas can definitely get it, but they aren't magnets for it like squash. And they can get it one year, then the next year, same spot, same soil, same conditions, they don't! Trial and error for your space is all you can do. Avoid the huge mistakes and learn from the little ones. 🙂

Love your show, but I'm not sure about my new Fig tree. A few months old & now I have some leaves that yellow & fall off... too much water - we are in a heat trend... so I thought more was needed - maybe a health issue? I do not see bugs.??? Please, what are your thoughts, & BTW, after planting, I noticed some of the leaves would dry & curl the edge tip of the leaf, then some would yellow spot & fall off...

I’ve tried to grow zucchini for years and hardly get anything for my effort. I tried them in pots but after they got all nice and big and bushy they died. No zucchini at all. Several years in a row. I was told they like cold feet. So I planted them in the ground. Same thing one year. Last year I got a few but the plant took over the garden. This year I planted several kinds of squash and the zucchini and yellow squash have got yellow leaves and stopped producing. So the yellow is indicative of mildew?!😱 I put the pulled plant into my compost bin. Did I just ruin everything? Strangely the new leaves on one of the yellow squash are coming in greener so I left it alone hoping my fertilizing was helping. Should I pull it?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about all the troubles. Yellow leaves is not mildew. Mildew comes in when the nights get dewy and moist. The leaves will eventually get a white powder on them. Yellow leaves is an environmental problem. pH, moisture, drainage, aeration, nutrients....something there isn't right. Most squash are insane growers....yes, they can have their problems and pests, but growing giant, green leaves is rarely a problem.
