@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thats theory as I understand it. Now, this means they arent going to be a foot tall as soon as the last frost date passes, so I lose some time. But my growing season for frost intolerant plants is officially 7+ months long. So, if Im off the hurried pace that everyone else is running with, well, that makes the garden a tranquil place.

I am starting my tomatoes, eggplant and peppers today's.. and onions. I have been doing king weeks at work and have a three work day week, so here's to yummy tomatoes this summer. I'm growing loads of yellow and green tomatoes. Zone 8b here. Hello from the Netherlands. We have definitely had really unpredictable weather this week. Three huge winter storms in one week. Happy gardening.

I did winter sowing. Today 60 by weekend 10 degrees. Here's one thing I still have snow and my garden beds I put them in are frozen soild so my winter sowing jugs are cold. I checked them this evening. Agreed pro's & cons but experimenting is fun. Mostly I have flowers out & some select herbs. Saw many live by it with weather up & down cover down with blankets or plastic. It's fun to try especially for flowers

Very interesting! Watched it even though I'd be astounded (&horrified) to ever get real snow in South Florida. Some of our tropicals, though, really don't handle anything lower than 45 degrees. I know...positively balmy to Canadians! My trick for providing just a little warmth may be useful against those unexpected late spring frosts, though. I mulch, then put Christmas mini-lights around the base of the plants. Then cover before sundown. *NOTE* A whole string of lights bunched up to cover3-4 feet. (abt.1 meter).

Ha ha I'd kill for 45 degrees this week! :-)

I winter sowed tomatoes last march. They won’t germinate until there is enough heat/light for them to. I ended up with super hardy, huge, and productive plants.

I have never winter sowed. I'm not sure what seeds besides garlic need the cold so I just sow and pray. LOL
@TheRipeTomatoFarms2 жыл бұрын
I agree Bev. Some wildflowers do need the chill....but its also about convenience. There are positives to it other than stratification of the seeds...

Hi there!! I have an onion question. I am zone 7B Southeast US. I tried planting onions in the fall as an experiment. I’m using the correct onions for my area. Three different varieties. One of them is looking really good. The other two look dead. My question is, the two that look bad (like some aren’t even looking like they’re there), will they still grow or are they a loss? I have more seeds starting inside as I need hundreds to suit my needs for the year, so I’m ok, but I’m curious now. Lol.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes onions can go dormant (like say garlic does), and it doesn't hurt... In fact it can help bulb formation... But it's not guaranteed... Especially if you have other specimens with the exact same conditions growing just fine
