There is a world of difference between how one person grows a beet, and how beets grow. It's a subtle distinction but the reason why this channel is so successful. Here we find out how beets grow, not how one person grows them. This distinction is almost invisible the closer geographically you are to the person growing- but becomes larger with increasing distance. My climate, even my hemisphere are opposite, yet this is the most relevant information because it relates to the growing habits of the plant, not the person. Its taken me months of binge watching to put my finger on why this Canadian helps this Australian while other Australians are mostly useless to me. So. Well done. See you next video 💖
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

I'm sooooooo glad you made that distinction Kerri, because its so important!! Its so true.....there's how a plant grows....then there's how each individual goes about growing it the best way they know how, often two very different things!

When it seems like a long time, just remember- time passes if you plant beets or not. When the time has passed, you'll have beets or not. But the time will pass, no matter what you do. Think of planting as a gift to your future self. A celebration of the importance of the passage of time... 💖😂

Also, I believe from what I understood.if you plant in fall time and leave over winter,then the seeds grow again in spring and believe it's year 2,even if it's only been 4months. So you don't need to plant in spring and leave for 2 entire years.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

@@cherylhowker1792 EXACTLY what Cheryl said. Like I mentioned in the video, its not a full 24 months, no matter when you plant. Its two GROWING SEASONS. If you plant late summer, you can harvest the seeds by early the following summer, taking less than a calendar year.

I somehow expedited the process. I had gotten bought some harvested beets placed in the fridge and when I realized I wasn't going to be able to make what I wanted with them in time I decided I would cut one of them up and put the cuttings in the freezer for smoothies so not to waste and then the other one I left whole in a jar of water to increase root production to experiment with growing methods as well as have greens... The one I cut up (everything but the root to stem spine section) I put outside before the last frost and had planned on putting glass jar over to keep it from freezing but a frost caught me off guard when I was dealing with some personal things and that didn't happen. I did cover it later after a few frosts and then removed it once it had started warming up enough. My beet plant is now 7 ft tall with 3 to 4 ft long flowering stems. So am waiting to harvest seeds. 😅

Thank-you for this extremely useful tutorial on getting beet seeds. I love me my beets and want to harvest my own seed. I already knew it took 2 years, but the late start and hold over winter was something I didn’t know. I do have a question….. several of our beets went to seed in this their first growing season. I’ve never had this happen. Should I assume that the heaping pile of seeds I got are not viable?
@sebasforest963

hi, I understand that keeping "bolters" seeds probably means keeping that undesirable bolting trait (going to seed in the first year) so your seeds are viable but will probably not give you a good crop.

@@sebasforest963 makes perfect sense. Looks like the seeds I bought from the seed company already had this negative characteristic. As many of the plants bolted and went to seed. I’ll look to changing my source. Thank-you for this comment.
