Fall is NOT the time to prune your plants. The temptation to prune and clean your plants at this time of year is never higher. However, it is a huge mistake to start trimming your fruit trees, shrubs, and other perennials in the Northern Hemisphere in the fall. With dormancy not fully set it, you run the risk of bud break and stimulating new growth dangerously too close to the upcoming first frosts.
Join me in this new video as I explain the dangers of fall pruning inn your Rosemary, Raspberries, Roses, Grapes, and Figs. The care you take for these perennial plants in your garden now and through the winter will pay dividends throughout the spring and into the next harvest! Specific pruning and care tips for each crop I grow on the farm are going to be added every week, so make sure to subscribe so you don't miss anything!
Check out the videos below for more pruning tips, as well, I have included the US and Canada Amazon Affiliate link if you are thinking of doing any garden supply shopping this fall! I know we are all excited to get a jump start on next spring, but resist that temptation to prune and clean up those perennials until full dormancy sets in...or better yet, near spring bud break! How are your fall gardens doing and how are you guys preparing for both winter, and the coming spring!?

Thanks! Yeah, you really have to watch that first frost date where you live, plus the level of dormancy that a particular plant will hit during the winter cycle. Cheers!

Nice. It's so cool to understand the why of the cycle of plants. Like strawberries, I wait until after a few cold snaos, so they know it's time to go dormant. Then I cover them for the winter with leaves and hay. I pruned my mulberry pretty hard in January last year...it survived and flourished but I think it was a bit early. Good job on the fig!

That's awesome Dani. Have you guys already had your first frost yet? We're close. Within a week for sure unless we get a warm front. Does your strawberries come through the hay by themselves in the spring, or do you have to "unbury" them? Cheers!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I unbury them! We frost by mid nov...but it's mild...rarely hard freezes here but it did snow in early 2014 and early 2018 I think it was..

Biggest mistake I made one year was pruning one of my best lavender bushes about a week before the first frost day. Well, the plant started new growth and breaking buds. The coming winter just annihilated the bush and I ended up removing the whole thing the very next summer. Never again!

I have a beautiful rosemary bush. I missed the pruning in august according to your video. I live in Stony Brook NY. Fall is here should I just keep watering it until the first frost and put straw around it. I won’t prune it now it’s to late

What’s the last date you suggest to prune rosemary and roses? I’m in zone 6.

I have pruned right into winter, but my climate is quite mild. I would say about 2 weeks before frost and you'll be safe.

I don’t understand what bud break and branching out mean. As far as hardening off, I thought that was the process of transplanting indoor seedlings outdoors by providing them sunlight gradually so they don’t die. What does hardening off mean in relation to winter for plants that are already outdoors? Finally, I’m just curious why your rosemary appears to have flowers? I’ve only had my plant for less than a year but I’ve had it all summer. Thank you 🤗

Bud break and branching out is the sprouting of new shoots and branches off the older ones... It's how trees and perennials grow. Hardening off in this case refers to those very same new shoots that are lush, green, and NOT yet hardened off.

Rosemary often needs a vernalization period (winter) to stimulate the u following year's flower buds.
