I'm in the Vancouver, BC area. My lilac is in a good spot I think, but I've stupidly over-pruned it and I've got no flowers. And I KNOW they thrive on neglect. I'm an idiot. I'll get it right next year. I haven't ruined my wisteria though, tons of flowers and stunning scent. Best ever.

Thanks and welcome to our channel. Don't be too hard on yourself....., look on the "bright side"..... because now that your pruning will have initiated strong new growth, your plant is likely to be bushier and have lots of flowers NEXT YEAR. So, all you've done is delayed the flowering for 12 months! Then when it them finishes flowering, you will know that, that is the time to prune it in subsequent years, so that from then onwards, you can have lots of beautiful flowers and a healthy, vigorous and colorful plant 😉😊👏💚 Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. Thanks! Lilacs are great - they love the cold, don't need fertilizer, grow in poor soil, and the deer don't eat them! The new shrubby types are a lot different than the old standards. I had one at the old place that was like a multi-stemmed tree. I would go in each year and saw off a third of the stems (the oldest ones) to get new growth. Most of the bush was too big to do any hair cutting. The ones I planted here at the new house were pretty small, and have just reached blooming size this year.

Thanks for letting us know. Now once your little plants begin to grow out and finish flowering you will know what to do to keep them bushy and not bare and "woody" at the base. By pruning them early in their life and consistently, you will be able to enjoy bushy, well shaped plants that you won't need to tackle with a saw. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. My home came with a lot of massive old lilacs in the yard. A couple of years ago (before I fenced my yard fully) a neighbor cut down a row of my old lilacs, because he couldn’t tell which were on his property and which were on mine. Now most of them are growing back with new shoots out of the old stumps! I’ll prune these to keep them a manageable size.

My mom's advice from her family, which puts it back into the 19th century, was to always cut out the largest vertical shoot each year. I don't do it regularly, but it seems to be working. I like your idea of reducing the size to keep it vigorous. I have a dwarf lilac that was a gift about 10 years ago. It's amazingly full and lush this spring, but is starting to get a bit too big for the space it's in. I think I'll use your method on it because it doesn't seem to have that tall central cane structure of my other lilacs. Thanks for this video and sharing your knowledge with us!

Yes, most of these types are grown on their own roots, so any suckers or "layered" shoots that have rooted in, will come true to type. It's always wise to be a little cautious of "pass along plants" because often they are vigorous spreaders that well-meaning people share because they have a lot of it! But, it this case (especially of its really good variety like David's 'Red Pixie') it will grow into a welcome and very beautiful addition. Have you subscribed to our channel? This year I’m going to cut everything to the ground to re set it due to only growth on top & very leggy. There’s suckers that grew from my previous cut backs which I’m hoping to take its place. Otherwise another great content. TY.

Sounds like the pruning work you've been doing during the last two years is beginning to pay off. David says, spreading the rejuvenation / renewal pruning over 3-4 years is good practice, it is less drastic and risky and gives the plants a chance to replenish naturally, and of course means that the plants look better too. Thanks for letting us know.

My question is whether it's possible to cut it back and transplant it somewhere sunny--it's currently under a large coniferous tree (not sure what kind) and a cherry tree. Yeah, our back yard is a mess. lol

@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
We understand, we see this happen fairly frequently, which is why it is important to start pruning them early in their life, so this doesn't happen. Essentially, the "renewal pruning" principle is still the same for your big plants, just look to try to try to encourage some shoots to sprout from lower down by taking out a few of the older branches each year over say a three or four year period. This gradual approach is less traumatic on the plants and eventually will get it back to being healthy and bushy nearer the base. It would probably be a good idea to fortify the ground by topdressing with a layer of nutritious soil or compost and maybe adding a little fertilizer too. Hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? David, I wanted to ask a question about another plant. I know that you would fertilize Hellebores in the fall, but exactly what fertilizer would you use?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Any well-balanced formulation that supplies NPK and the micro elements in proportion will do the trick. We are determined to maintain our independence (not be beholding to any one brand or corporation), so we are hesitant to name any specific brands, but if you check with your local garden center experts they will be able to guide you with the ones that they find are best for your local conditions. Also, in checking with David he tells us that he prefers to fertilize his Hellebores in very early spring, before growth starts, doing it is the fall is good too but some elements might get leached out during winter and snow melt. If you use a slow release formulation this is less likely to happen. Have you subscribed to our channel? Thank you, with a lot of plants (especially Roses and Perennials) that's a good point. By removing the old (spent) flower heads, you will usually stimulate new growth and flower buds and channel that energy into new rounds of flowering, and here on this channel you will find several videos where David shows how to do it - we call it "dead-heading".

Deer normally leave them alone (at least in David's garden). If they are absolutely starving they might have a go, but normally they will pick on other things. That "vase" shape is more likely to be caused by lack of vigor and declining light levels at the base, which is why if you want well furnished there, means doing the renewal pruning that David was describing. It maybe the variety, some are shy flowering and take quite a few years to reach the flowering stage but it is more likely that perhaps they are getting too much (unintentional) nutrient from say lawn fertilizer or perhaps not enough sunshine, because they flower better in sunny spots. As you can probably understand it is difficult to diagnose the situation without actually seeing and evaluating everything, so a lot of this is just speculation, your local extension service or perhaps a knowledge master gardeners might be able to help better. David, how and when do you prune the dwarf re-blooming lilacs?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Now! Like we show in this video.... immediately after flowering! The principle is exactly the same, except that the new flush of flower buds will appear on the new growth this late-summer and Fall. By pruning them now, you will get a better more concentrated flower flush. Just shorten them back by about 1/3 and if its an older, "woody" plant - do a bit of the renewal pruning too. That will keep them producing new fresh shoots from the base and lower down the plan. Have you subscribed to our channel? Yes, that's part of the idea behind pruning it. If you look again at David's plants you will see that they are flowering all the way from the top to the bottom! Mind you, we suggest that you prune it back in stages - perhaps over a three to four year period. If you care to rewatch this video, you will see David explain about this "renewal" pruning. This is when you would take out about 25% of the older stems each year, eventually getting it back to having flowering stems that are closer to the ground and eye level. Want to know if your lilac bush is tall and the blooms are coming in but it’s tall what do your do to shorten it
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 6 ай бұрын
We have some sorts that are taller. And with these, the principle is pretty much the same as David is advocating with this wonderful, smaller growing variety. So, when you get a chance, rewatch this video a couple of times and you will see how David prunes it after if finishes flowering. He starts by taking out the dead, damaged and any diseased wood, then thins out the center and shortens back some of the older branches. With your larger plant you could start by pruning a proportion (for example about 1/3) of the larger, taller branches taking them back to the desired height. Then next year, repeat and take out a second 1/3, and then finally in the 3rd year take out the remaining older branches. By this stage you should have younger growths sprouting from lower down and a more vigorous, free flowering plant. Then when you feel more confident, you can get the pruning saw out and take out the older woodier, basal branches to achieve a plant that has strong growth sprouting from near the base of the plant. An annual dressing of a well-balanced fertilizer in early spring will also help to encourage good productive growth. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. But now that you've mentioned it, we will try to focus in closer. We don't know if you've watched the whole video right through to the end, but at the 11.13 minute and 12.07 marks, the camera does show in closer detail how David was making his pruning cuts. And if you need a bit more clarification, you might like to catch another of David 's videos where he was pruning a Panicle Hydrangea: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGe2hXiwqbKUd7M. In this video, the plant has less branches, and they are thick and sturdy, so it is easier to focus in on what is going on! We hope this helps explain a little better. Red Pixie is a smaller, growing variety but the same principle applies to taller growing ones too, and that's why it is good to start pruning them as young plants. If they haven't been pruned they can get tall and "leggy', and it is possible to get them to replenish near the base again by taking out the proportion of older wood over a three or four year period, and if you are unable to do this on your own, you might have to bring in some outside expertise. Small pruning cuts like these callus over and heal quickly, and if you noticed David was talking about trimming them back at leaf and branch joints, because that's where there's harder, lignified tissue which helps to ward off any issues too. it is interesting that years ago arborists used to seal large pruning wounds on trees, nowadays then general consensus is to not seal them either. Yes, but if you rewatch David's video, you will hear him explain how he likes to take them back gradually by thinning out the major branches and doing that over a 3-4 year period. Its better to start doing that when they are young plants, but with older woodier plants taking out a proportion (a third or a quarter) works well too, and is less traumatic on the plants and you still get to enjoy flowering each spring while the new shoots replenish from lower down the plant. We grow most of our plants from cuttings and in this video David explains the process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmq0fKmniLWfadEsi=g2HcV_U9aLRUo30B. In this video he is filming it inside one of our "state of the art" propagation greenhouses and he is taking cuttings of a perennial, but as you will see that the principle for woody plants is pretty much the same for you at home. Thanks for asking. Sounds like you may have missed the part in this video, where David mentions that the best time to prune lilacs is after they finish flowering. You see, because calendar dates vary according to the area and zone we all live in, that could be almost any date in spring or early summer (in northerly parts), so by pruning them immediately after they finish flowering, it leaves the maximum amount of time for them to regrow and set new flower buds for the following spring. The main thing will be try to provide good growing conditions, so watering during prolonged dry periods and if you haven't done it already put down a layer of mulch, this will help to keep the soil cool and moist and ensure good root growth. Pruning it (like David demonstrates), will help to keep it regenerated with new growth coming from the base, and like David mentions, the best time to prune is soon after it finishes flowering. It's important when removing suckers - especially any that come form rootstock on budded or grafted plants, that you dig down and tear off the sucker at the point where it springs from the base of the plant. Many times people just cut them off at ground level and then they resprout with extra vigor and come back even stronger. One of these days, maybe, we can get David to post a video showing the best way to deal with these suckers. So stay tuned, and we are wondering have you subscribed to our channel? That's where planting a selection of varieties that flower at different times is important. Early, Mid-season and late flowering ones will keep the color going over along period and then if plant the reblooming ones, you'll get flowers in the autumn too. Will lilacs grow in Florida?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
The Lilacs we grow here in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are very hardy, selections that require a period of chilly winter dormancy to perform at their highest levels, and since our experience is limited to this region, we would defer to the knowledge of your local garden centers, so if would be best to check with your local experts. We know that some selections are rated in zones 3-8, so it may be possible to grow them in some parts of Florida, but local knowledge is always worth checking on. I have a tall..about 15 feet or so but all the flowers are on top. Can I cut it back to about 6 to 10 feet tall?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely, but rather than "chop off" the top, we suggest you take David's renewable approach by thinning out and shortening back a proportion (perhaps a third) of growth. David's approach is to use this same principle to your taller growing ones too. If they haven't been pruned they can get tall and "leggy', and it is possible to get them to replenish near the base again by taking out the proportion of older wood over a three or four year period. my lilac is full of leaves with some flowers now... its good for privacy from the neighbor so I dont really want to prune it now, is it ok to prune in the fall when the leaves drop off?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Yes, it can be pruned in the Fall. But remember, the shoots you trim are likely to have flower buds, so it will grow out in spring but may not flower so well. Trimming it immediately after flowering leaves the longest possible time for it to set the buds for the next spring. Have you subscribed to our channel? Can you make cuttings from Lilacs if so how?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
It is possible to root Lilacs from cuttings... that's how we do it. This link to another viewers question about another plants will show you how: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmq0fKmniLWfadE However, they can be tricky, so don't be disappointed if it doesn't work. Established plants will often have suckers that sprout from the crowns, that can be removed. This might be a better, more reliable way, to get a new plant. But of course, you have to get an established plant first, so maybe a visit to one of our partnering garden centers is on the cards. And then, in a few years, look for an offset that can be separated and grown out. Have you subscribed to our channel?
