I would add another tip. In some cases, if you are in a urban area, you will have to do manual polinization of the flower when is ready, or the fruit won't appear. There may not be enough insects for polinization to happen.

Not sure if anyone in the comments mentioned acidity of the soil, strawberry plants prefer an acidity of about 4.5 to 5.5, where most other vegetable crops prefer 5.5 to 7.0 (neutral). Great video and tips! 👍

I started a batch of strawberry plants in containers 2 years ago. Same soil in all the pots. All of the pots produced berries but one. The one pot had two plants and did not produce a single flower or fruit. However, the two plants did produce runners...a lot of runners, like 35 runners. Can't complain, those runners let me make a nice 4×4 strawberry patch.

Jeff explains very well in his video why some people get very few strawberries. I would also add that the type of soil is also important, strawberry plants like a light and acid soil between 5.5 and 6.5 pH, if your soil is too heavy and chalky, it is not good for the plant and for the strawberry production. Concerning the age, a strawberry plant will give a maximum of strawberries the first three years, after that the production will decrease. Concerning the heat, the ideal temperature for the strawberry plant is 22 degrees Celsius during the day and 18 at night, with a humidity level between 70 and 85%. If temperatures exceed 28 degrees Celsius, production will decrease significantly. Regarding fertilization, it is necessary to apply an equal amount of NPK fertilizer, 5-5-5 ...10-10-10 or other.... at the beginning and throughout the growth of the plant, once the strawberry plant is adult, increase the potassium and decrease nitrogen and phosphorus to stimulate flowering and strawberry production. As Jeff explains perfectly, strawberry plants don't like to receive too much fertilizer, the reason is that the minerals build up at the roots and the strawberry plants suffer. If this is the case with your strawberry plants, water them thoroughly to wash the soil and remove the accumulated salts from the roots.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Perfect synopsis Pierre...and spot on about the pH. Alkaline will lock up nutrients, making them unavailable for strawberry plants. Great stuff man! :-)

So well explained thank you. Here in Manitoba we have had some drastic temperature changes of late. So much so that most of my plants are struggling. Windy as all heck, cool nights, hot days with zero precipitation. Tap water is ok, but it is still not as good as what falls from the sky. My rain barrels have been dry for 2 years now. Sure I leave some water to gas-off for a day or so but it still is not rain water. As I mentioned earlier, Peaceful Gardening.

I have been loving your strawberry videos! I first planted strawberries as a ground cover. I had moved into a new house that had an aggressive weed patch. After I dug it out, I was looking for something to fill the space and discourage their return and a local grower was seeking strawberries. I just planted them without any consideration. That was four years ago. Since then, I’ve been spreading them around the yard. Thanks to your videos, I’ve been trying to clean up the patches. Anyway, I’m thinking of transplanting most of my plants to beds that are easier to access. I see that you plant in a variety of containers. Is that something I can do in zone 6?

if potted, methinks you need to examine your roots,. pop the plant out into your hand, if you can see roots all over the place, you're good for fruit. if it looks like there's only traces of roots around, pinch the fruit and runners for another season. I was able to get many red berries the issue was sweetness. Last year, seemed to be very sweet but this year bland. I am wondering what caused it. The plants are 2 to 3 years old. Thoughts?

Okay so I've got a really pretty strawberry plant with about 8 to 10 runners that are about 3 or 4 ft long. The plant is only two or three months old. I'm just trying to understand how the plant produces the fruits. Should I cut off a majority of the runners and start new plants with those runners (of course after letting them root). I've just been a lot of time taking care of this thing and want to do it right, thanks for any advice!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right Jeremy. The runners can establish brand new plants for you, expanding your strawberry patch.....plus, they take energy from the mother plant's production, so they should come off anyways. :-)

I could really use your help . Please answer 😭. So I’m new to gardening and I’ve been trying to grow strawberries for at least 5 weeks now. They are still baby sprouts and having been growing. I’ve repotted them and I used banana water to boost their growth but that hasn’t been working either. Is there a reason I don’t know behind this ? And mind you I’m new to gardening. The only thing that’s going good right now are my onions and watermelons . Please help me 😭

Hey CJ, sweetness in the berries seems to be a function of the soil. Drainage and nutrients specifically.

Temps have been lower than norm, but they're in full sun. Should I pull them into more shade? Container planted. Thank you in advance. 😊

More light, better drainage, higher organic content soil, slow-release nitrogen.....many factors. Hard to say without actually seeing the plants or conditions.

My strawberries are not doing so well. I was told using 1 cup of vinegar and 1 litter of water would help boost my berries. So I tried it n it is working so far but I want to do more 4 them. I need to add mulch around my plants and water them more often. We live in SC and it gets pretty hott during the summer. Any other tips you can give me please Food wise. What do u think about the vinegar and water method?

Oh, my dear ... vinegar is good for killing weeds, not so good for the garden. I would mulch, and try a diluted 10.10.10. They may be damaged for this year, but if they're not too bad, I would try to baby them through to next year...and save the vinegar for weeds only! 😅
