In the second version, you'll insert your hook into the back loop, plus two loops from the previous row, so you're working through three loops. In the first version, you're only working through two loops. This creates a different texture. Once you get started, it will make more sense! :)

So I got the written pattern, but I don't understand the color changes - on one side it's part white and part green but I can't figure out how to do one color on the back vs the two different ones on the front. ( hope that question makes sense)

That's great you got the written pattern! Hope you like it! In regards to the colours - It's two different potholders you see on pictures, one is using the green and white colours and the other one lilac and white. You start with one colour and change halfway through to another. Hope this helps! Let me know if any more questions :)
