Great video man, glad to see the German chemtubers together again! I do have a different explanation for the thermite explosion though: I believe it is a coulomb explosion, similar to sodium in water. Essentially, in some cases when a reactive liquid metal contacts water, the water will solvate some of the metal's electrons, causing the metal to develop a net-positive charge. This causes the liquid metal to basically repel itself, blowing itself apart! Thunderf00t actually has a great video on this phenomenon, which explains its relation to thermite in much greater detail. I personally find this theory more believable, since an oxy-hydrogen detonation would require a very large amount of hydrogen to build up around the white-hot metal without prematurely igniting or blowing away.

Most likely from molten and unreacted aluminium.

Also thought about it maybe brimg a coloumb explosion. Happens super darn fast. Wonder if you could observe it in high speed like TF did it with alkali metals. Another mystery to solve I guess.
@argoneum
@argoneum Жыл бұрын
Yep, just like (molten) alkali metals exploding in water. Or molten zirconium exploding in Chernobyl. Still theory, but a good one, and this kind of explosions are more powerful than just hydrogen, especially in open area. Not only a loud BANG, but also coming from within metal itself (rapidly losing electrons into water), causing it to splash around.

Whatever the mechanism is for the explosion, it cannot happen without a process that can exponentially increase reaction rate. Since ice is solid and iron is liquid it must involve some mechanism of creating more and more reactive surface area. I think the iron directly reducing the water is probably a component, perhaps the main component of how it happens.
@ai_serf
@ai_serf Жыл бұрын
ice goes to gas, lots of oxygen in that gas, you now have oxidizer and fuel(thermite). i guess we go boom now.
@That_Chemist

I think it's more likely the metal is reacting with water, forming metal oxides + H2, and that reacts with O2 from the air
@THYZOID

That is another great theory. Would explain the massive amount of released energy
@LabCoatz_Science
@LabCoatz_Science Жыл бұрын
I think the metal definitely reacts with the water, but I think the main detonation comes from a coulomb explosion, similar to sodium. The hydrogen would be formed far above its auto-ignition temperature, and it would need to build up and mix with the oxygen in the air to detonate.

Thermite, you love to see it! Great work, guys! If that method of ruby formation didn’t work out, I know when I was doing chromium thermite (chromium oxide + aluminum + a little potassium nitrate as the regular reaction was too slow) some parts of the slag were fluorescing bright red so maybe if you want to continue down the rabbit hole of thermite rubies that may be a good next try! I have a feeling I posted this in someone’s comment section before some years ago so ignore me if I’m repeating myself here.

Could it be that the iFe is reacting directly with the water similar to Na with water, the explosion from Na & water is due to a build up of positive ions in the metal, I don't know if I'm remembering that right but a channel called Thunderf00t did some videos on alkali metals reacting with water!

What about remaining super heated aluminium reacting directly with water could this be responsible for the explosion? (similar to a flash powder) burning magnesium also explodes in water and burning magnesium can even use CO2 as an oxidizer

Educated guess: I'd say water vapor and aluminum caused that big bang, as H2 evolved and burned later with O2. Dehydration of sugar didn't do the same thing, as C is pretty good at quenching free radicals.

May thermite be used to speed up the barbeque process? Can the radiant energy be harnessed to flash cook barbequed chicken? I believe this could lock in that chicken barbeque flavor without excessively drying the meat. I have not been able to find anyone with experience in thermite cooking or cuisine. I would like to obtain any relevant details for thermite cooking eg how deep should chicken be buried in thermite, what flavor of thermite is tastiest?

When I hit aluminium foil on a rusty steel surface with a hammer, it exploded. I can't confirm it, but it really sounded like a detonation shockwave - although I managed to create a small shockwave just by hitting the hammer at the right angle.
