I have a question. I just bought a house 2 months ago, and just replaced the old thermostat (Venstar T0140) with the Ecobee 5 Smart Thermostat. The old thermostat had a six wire set up; O, G, W, Y, R, C. I have a Trane/American Standard Split Heat Pump System. Exterior unit is model 4TWB3036C1000AA, and the furnace is model TEM3A0B36S31SAA. When setting up the ecobee, it asked if I would like to allow heat pump and aux heat to run simultaneously, with a warning to set it to disable if natural gas or oil is the aux heat fuel, otherwise heat pump failure may occur. That would not apply to me however as my house is total electric. The old thermostat according to the manual labels the W wire as aux heat as it is the sole W wire. But everywhere else I have looked online, aux heat usually comes from a W2 or Aux wire (sometimes brown in color). So my question would be, do I even have aux heat based on my model numbers (I have searched everywhere and can't find it) and should I leave the setting ecobee is questioning set to on or off if I am unsure? Could my system potentially have electric aux heat without having to have a w2 wire on the thermostat?

I am trying to figure out if I have a two stage system or single stage. I only have 1 Y wire and W wire. But maybe the installer didn't install a 2 stage thermostat. How can I tell besides looking at the thermostat wires. I definitely have a variable speed air handler. What is the difference between a two stage compressor or furnace and a variable speed air handler? I know that the variable speed air handler will vary the speed of the fan thus the air blowing out of the vents. Can you clarify the difference. Thanks

@OneHourSmartHome3 жыл бұрын
It just depends on your system. But if you have an R wire (Power), W wire (Call for heat) and a G wire (Call for fan) it's possible in some instances to wire up the three wires in a configuration with R wire (Power) and then change the W wire to W1 terminal on the furnace and the thermostat. Then change the G wire to the W2 terminal on the furnace and the thermostat. In this configuration you would lose the ability to independently control the fan, but it should automatically turn on whenever there is a call for heat. I would recommend the Nest Gen 3: amzn.to/3stoUKn as it does not typically require a common wire in most configurations.

Basically thermostat is a switch which is activated by temperature. One of the three wires call for boiler to start and on thermostat it is W1 for heat. Assuming C is common and red is power, the white one may need to be connected to W1. BUT do verify the connections at boiler and the power being supplied through red and c wires with a volt meter. I am just wondering why you have a C common wire for old setup.
