Today I want to talk about how simple a thermostat really is how the common and hot wire goes to a transformer, how you tie the white wire for the heat strip, connect the green wire which controls the indoor blower and the yellow wire (compressor) directly with each other from the thermostat in the event you have a an emergency where your thermostat goes bad, you can use the system in the heating cycle by tying the red wire, the yellow wire and the green wire together in an emergency situation or if the outdoor heat pump is not working you can tie together the white wire, the green wire, and the red wire. In the summertime for cooling you would tie the yellow wire, the red wire, and the Green wire together. If you have any questions please visit our website or check out our other videos on this and many other HVAC topics.
Thanks for watching!

Thank you David, very easy to understand and straight forward videos. I am trying to troubleshoot Goodman heat pump. Now I am equipped with some good first troubleshooting steps for my handyman to execute. You right it’s not rocket science, but many folks struggle to understand it all, simply because there are so many components in a heat pump. I think you simplified them quiet a bit for sure. There are other things as well such as pressure switches etc, but overall I think this video is solid. I like it... tomorrow I will be doing some pressure testing along with evacuation procedure and some thermostat troubleshooting. Note I am just home owner not HVAC tech. I was thinking now that I run my whole house on solar, maybe I will also install heat strip.... or maybe my 2nd stage heat... or should I say 3rd.... I have radiators in my house heating up my house with tankless water heater.... I wonder if I can hook up my thermostat to all 3 things.... heat strip.... and my tankless water heater..... I want to achieve the following.... by default heat pump heating my house with forced air... then if it gets cold... heat strip comes on.... then if it gets super cold.... my tankless water heater turns on.... Note my tankless water heater uses gas which is cheaper than electricity ....however I got solar panels now... so I don’t care about electricity usage anymore.... hence by default I want to use heat pump forced air.... and only have tankless gas water heater heated radiators to come on only if it’s a lot colder below 32 degrees for example.... So do I just hook up my tankless water heater as the second stage to w2 wire? I am a bit confused... I don’t want my heat boiler to work when my heat pump is working, and want it to turn on automatically.... when it’s colder than 32 degrees.... I kind of like strip heat since it gives immediate satisfaction as well.... when it comes to forced air.... but I don’t want to operate on it for a long time.... Only initially just to give me initial quick heating satisfaction in my 1500 square foot home.... but then have itself turn off automatically when it gets warmer and boiler used instead.... Is it even possible to do? Or am I way overboard here? Maybe I should use if this then that automation with Alexa integrated feature to program tankless water heater to turn on while having heat pump turned off.... I haven’t wrapped my mind around all of this yet.... if you have any suggestions let me know. Thank You so much.

I know this vid is old but. For you heat pump people out there the Orange (in almost All 90% of heat pump units) wire HAS to be energized to reverse the valve to Cool. When orange is Not energized it is in standard Heat mode. This is why a regular AC Thermostat does Not work for a heat pump. If you were to connect it to a heat pump it would be in heat cycle all the time do to the lack of the Orange wire connection. When he did not connect the Orange it would have fired up but would have been heating. Good vid just making a point...

It is possible that your thermostat could be at fault. Try removing the wires from the R and W terminals at your thermostat and touching them together. If the furnace starts and runs again, then it is likely your thermostat is no longer sending 24v back from W to the furnace. Replace the thermostat. If the furnace does not start and run, then it is likely that something on the furnace side of the system may be the cause. Check the furnace for a fault code at the circuit board or observe the furnace operations to continue diagnosis.

Best vid I have seen. Wish you had mentioned Rheem and Ruud and where to connect reversing valve wire (normally orange) since their reversing valve works backwards from other mfg. In other mfg heat pumps it energizes the reversing valve in the cooling mode but with Rheem and Ruud it energizes the reversing valve in the heating mode.

I had an old Honeywell thermostat; old house, old wiring. Took the old thermostat off to install new RTH7600 Honeywell thermostat. My wiring has only 4 wires; red, green, black and yellow. encapsulated inside a white wire coming out of the wall. The old thermostat was connected to the red and green wires; the black and yellow wires were wrapped around the white wire coming out of the wall. I cant get the heat to come on after reconnecting the red and green wires on the new thermostat. Any ideas?

B K, I think the 2 replies above are correct. If you have a heat pump, you would need to connect the R to the Y,G, & O. R is 24 volt, Y turns on the compressor, G turns on the inside blower, & O shifts the reversing valve to route Freon to cool the house.

It would have been nice to include short testing in the video. For example to test the compressor, connect power (red) with a specific color (ex. yellow) or for fan (G) and red. etc. I'm not that savvy, but this would help to identify what's happening with any breakdown or not.

David. Very thorough info. Thank you. But I have a question for you. I disconnected the "W2 White Wire" to Auxiliary at the thermostat because it turns on with only two degrees more in setting. When I turned power back on AUX on thermostat showed running on the display. What's going on? Please email me on this.

all the thermostats are the same but when he neglects to tell you is that the White-Rodgers thermostat.. has a 6 wire setup you have a brown wire that runs directly to the e connector for emergency heat. connector E... and you will not find that connection in most modern day thermostats. the other thermostats aren't set up like, so it's very confusing the White-Rodgers is a classic 80 series model. and that's completely different from all the other thermostats.

Made the mistake of connecting the common wire to the B terminal thinking it meant blue for B , but instead it meant black for ground ?

He does a good job of explaining the details that many other videos did not share. It is easy to troubleshoot.

Great video! None of Honeywell's documentation explained what letters are what on the back of their thermostat. This video helped me out greatly, thank you.

This video did not help with my situation. I do not have 7 or 8 wires. Like most homes, we only have 4. The issue is that heat will not come on when wired to run AC. And AC will not come on when wired to run heat. There are several factors you skipped over that could help most of us solve our problems.

David, I have a Trane T-stat Model # BAYSENS019B that has numbers not letters. #7 White (Heat), #8 Blue (Cool), #9 Green (System On/Off), #10 (not Used), #11 Black Common, #12 Brown (Communication) & #14 Red (Power). not sure what I can replace it with, I tried two different T-stats but none worked. can you explain this mess for me, what T-stat can I replace the old non functioning one with? does it has to be Trane? can it be wifi? you can use my email for reply. Thanks
