Thanks for the video. My folks attempted to install a new stat today but ran into alot of problems. Their old wiring is as follows: White - W2, Green - G, Red - R, Yellow - Y, Black X, Blue B. The new stat has L, Aux/E, G, O/B, Y, R, RC (jumper). They have a heat pump system.

Thank you so very much. My background is electronics, way back to when vacuum tubes where still in popular use. This is by far the best explanation of a thermostat, the wiring and function of the components. Now if the field techs would adhere to a consistent color code, life would be simple. I wish you would have included the color code as part of this excellent presentation. Thank you again.
@cspark9186
@cspark9186 6 ай бұрын
Yep, nobody seems to give the whole story. For single heat/single cool systems... "Typical" color codes... (W2/Aux > Orange >> Electric Strip Heat).... (G > Green >> Fan)... (W/OB > White >> Changeover Valve or Reversing Valve)... (C > Black or Blue >> Transformer Common)... (Y > Yellow >> Compressor)... (R/Rc > Red >> Transformer Hot). NOTE: Not all technicians use the same color codes The thermostate terminal connections match the terminal connections at the air handler. If the new thermostat is not wired like the above, you will need to check the connections at the air handler and use the same color coding. Make note of the changes.

My 1st two heat pumps at my home were Rheem/Ruud. The reversing valve energized in the heat mode. Had a new Trane installed and the installer mentioned the reversing valve would now be energized in the cool mode. I agree with him that all brands of heat pumps should energize the valve in heat mode. Then, if the valve malfunctions, you could switch over to emergency heat until you could get unit serviced. A malfunction of a R valve that is energized in cool mode will leave the resident without AC. There is no emergency cool on a heat pump .

Good point. I will say that a reversing valve failure is pretty rare, though.

I just noticed the blue wire is hooked in the "y" yellow spot. Been working for yrs until now and i just noticed. Is that common? The problem I'm having right now is my thermostat says cool when it's turned on heat, but heat is coming out. The set temperature isn't correct though. I have no idea what the heat is actually on. Once it gets warmer enough, i just turn it off or it will continue running bc the temperatures never match up. Possible problems?

I am trying to upgrade an old Honeywell T7350 commercial tstat with a new Wifi enabled TH8321WF . The wiring requirement appears to be different on the new therm. The old therm is wired as follows .. Orange Wire -> Y2 Green Wire -> G Yellow Wire -> Y1 Red Wire -> Rc (jumped) White wire -> X My question is... what wire do I use to power the new therm on the C terminal? This therm is part of a system that is in a 10,000sqf corportate office. It is only used for AC. No heat. Our HVAC provider wants $3400 to replace 4 thermostats. That seems kind of insane to me as its just 5 wires. Any help would be GREATLY apprecaited!!

The wires can only be secured in the top screw openings. The slots underneath are where the leads plug into when the thermostat is put back together.

I am going to replace an old Dayton thermostat, it has no C terminal, but I'm installing a new Honeywell which I would imagine does have that terminal. This is standard gas furnace and central A/C. I see that I have one wire (black) coming from the wall which was not hooked to anything before. How would I find out if I should connect that to C? Thanks much. ps, I just used my voltmeter and I show 15AC going from R to C wires. R to Y is 27AC.

Get a battery Stat and you will not need c. You get 15 volts because the black wire is disconnected or not the common on the other end.

+Talyn875 PRO You are totally right I traced it back and it's not hooked to anything at the other end. Can't I just now hook that un-used wire to C on the transformer and also on the thermostat? Obviously with the power off, but do you need to do any sort of power drain from the transformer to discharge it after power is off to make sure it's safe? Thanks again. I haven't even picked up the new thermostat yet, just planning in advance.

I just moved into a house and I believe that a new thermostat was installed right before I moved in. The fan won't shut off even if the heat and ac are off. Is there a possibility that a wire is installed wrong, or something else?
@graucho12
@graucho12 8 жыл бұрын
It is possible that a wire is jumped from R to G (blower tied directly to power). Sometimes DIYer's get bad advice from Home Depot staff. There would be no reason to jump R to G because that would permanently energize the fan causing constant running of the blower, but it could be done. Take TStat off and look for a wire that is plugged directly from R to G. If so then the blower is jumped on.

Yup usually W and R *for two wire millivolt system* (left the jumper with R2 in mine) and itll just create a close circuit on a millivolt system when set to heat and a temperature is lower than set point, causing the heater to turn on.

Great video for anybody that doesn't know anything about how to wire a thermostat, I wish I had it when I was first learning about them. But I am trying to find out what is wrong witha thermostat from the same series which is the TH1110DV I run the maintenance shop for our Apt. complex and have been replacing old thermostats with said thermostats, and I have run into a problem I've never seen or had happen before and can't seem to find anyone or anywhere that speaks of it either. But I've'had it happen twice, both with brand new thermostats and both with the same Apt. which makes me think that something is wrongwith the system that's causing it to happen, the first one I installed had been working just fine for at least a couple of months, when the tenant complained her heater wasn't putting out any heat even though the fan was blowing, which was nothing new it usually meant their filter was probably dirty and had triggered one of the many limit switches and needed to be reset after changing the filter. Only this time an additional problem had occured, when I went to turn up the thermostat and get it to call for heat it wouldn't do anything in heat mode but show the current temp, but when switched to cool it worked just fine move the switch back down to heat nothing but current temp. tried everything removing batteries, installing backwards for five seconds nothing in heat mode, so I took the cover off of one I had just installed in another apt. and stuck it on the sub-base of the one with the problem and woolah got hewr heater running and then the next day the tenant she's not getting any heat again and upon checking it out the same dam thing had happened it did nothing but show the current temp. in heat mode but worked as it is suppose to in cool I've looked through the manual for the heater and the manual for the thermostat, googled it, but no mention of that particular problem nowhere not even on this site, can anyone tell me what's going on or maybe an idea where to start looking. Sorry this was so long but I had to explain it in detail so youy would know exactly what's going on. thanks

Step down transformer is not integral in the TStat. It is wired in series before the TStat as part of the low voltage control circuit. I usually find them inside the air handler next to the control board.
@graucho12
@graucho12 8 жыл бұрын
These systems will usually be running a step down from 240VAC to 24VAC. They are getting power directly from the distribution panel. If it is running 110 volts (which is rare) then it is plugged to a wall outlet like an appliance.

I don't understand with the o/b. It's going to be either energized or not. How are they sharing the same terminal? When it's in Cooling, O needs to be energized. And in Heating B needs to be energized. So how does that work when they share the same terminal? Are you supposed to go into the thermostat on the digital part and program that part of it?

Useless to me. You kept saying, if it is not a rheem blah blah, if it is other than rheem blah blah. I have a rheem and didn't follow you at all.

This video is typical of 99% of KZbin do it yourself videos. The producer talks in expert language! Singing to the choir. I don’t get it. Experts don’t need help. Average, non technical people are the ones turning to these videos and yet the video is way over the heads of the very people it’s supposed to help. This one is just like all the rest. I was lost in the first minute. Why bother going to the trouble of making the darn thing in the first place? If you cannot “dumb” your presentation down to the level of your viewers, simply ask an average person to do the video for you in language your viewers will understand. Thank you.

This video is no more complicated than most plumbing videos for the average Joe. Hot is on the left... Cold is on the right.
