Today I'mI'm heading away from the tourist areas in Bangkok to a little area called Talat Phlu in Thonburi. We're going to be checking out a really local Thai street food area to try loads of different Thai dishes and snacks.
You won't believe how cheap Bangkok street food is in 2024!
I really want you to see how well Thai locals treat you when you're away from the tourist areas of Khaosan and the Sukhumvit Road.
Directions to where I ate today:
maps.app.goo.g...
#bangkokfloatingmarket #thailand2024 #thaifood
About the area:
Talat Phlu is a neighborhood located in the Thon Buri district of Bangkok, Thailand. Thon Buri is situated on the western banks of the Chao Phraya River, and Talat Phlu is one of its prominent areas. The neighborhood is known for its vibrant local atmosphere, traditional markets, and convenient transportation links.
Talat Phlu is primarily a residential area, with a mix of low-rise housing, townhouses, and apartment buildings. It offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai living experience compared to the bustling city center of Bangkok. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community, with local residents often engaging in small businesses and street food stalls.
One of the highlights of Talat Phlu is its namesake market, Talat Phlu Market. This traditional market is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Here, you can find a wide array of fresh produce, meats, seafood, and other food items. The market also offers clothing, accessories, household items, and local handicrafts.
In addition to the market, Talat Phlu has numerous street food stalls and small restaurants where you can indulge in authentic Thai cuisine at affordable prices. From classic dishes like Pad Thai and Tom Yum to various grilled meats and seafood, the neighborhood offers a diverse range of culinary experiences.
Transportation in Talat Phlu is convenient due to its proximity to major roads and public transportation options. The Talat Phlu BTS Skytrain station provides easy access to other parts of Bangkok, making it convenient for both residents and visitors to explore the city.
Overall, Talat Phlu is a vibrant neighborhood in Bangkok that offers a blend of local charm, traditional markets, and easy access to transportation. It is a great place to experience the authentic side of Bangkok and indulge in delicious Thai cuisine.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this KZbin channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

I never get when people say it's expensive nowadays. I swear half the time we're eating at any street spot we can't actually believe how affordable the food is.

Actually, majorities of tourists in Thailand came from other Asian countries. Mainly China, Malaysia, India, Laos, Indonesia, etc. These tourists doesn't made as much money as tourists from Japan, SIngapore, UK or US. Especially when other tourists destinations like Vietnam and Philippines started to get more and more popular and accessible. The pricing for things like food in Thailand became more and more expensive for them.

Ellis - you are probably still thinking and comparing it to your country's value of money too. IF comparing Thai's baht to British pound/sterling and USD, then, yes, it's affordable and cheap. My son was saying that every time we bought/paid something in Thailand. But that would not be sustainable if an average income foreigner was to live there. You see/hear about young foreign guys posting how they ran out of money after about 3 months in Thailand. Living large and not adjusting is more like it.

@@alias7859 When I'm in Thailand I spend around £300 per month but I just like most locals do and could spend less. Of course I understand it's expensive for Thai people and nearby countries! But the video mentions westerners saying prices have gone up in Bangkok recently!
@nntflow7058

@@EllisWR That is because of the fact that Thai's inflation rate in 2022 spiked to 6%. The highest since the 2008 crisis. in the last decade, before the pandemic, inflation rate actually decreased to negative number. This is why prices have been surging in recent couple of months.

Love the feel of these videos, when you connect so strongly with the locals! Watching this, I'm in a virtual food coma! Forget the night market. This looks like the hidden gem. 30 baht for the first bowl. You are kidding me!! Thanks for the heads up. Might head here in May, instead of the night market. Part II, yes please!

Gary, I don't have to tell you that this is the kind of food I love to eat (and approximate when I cook) and the kind of people I love to meet and spend time with. My fear is that you might get too many tourists and thrill seekers to go there and change the whole vibe and spirit. When I was over there back in the day, I made it a point to avoid the places where the American military was changing the pace in certain neighborhoods (and we had folks in the Peace Corps and USIS/USIA who were already planning to set up the whole tourist thing as soon as the Viet Nam war was over). I really feel that I need to get over there in the next year or so if I want to enjoy the best experience of Thailand as I remember it. On another tack, I know you asked a question of subscribers about TikTok the other day. My take is this.....TikTok has so many negatives I could mention that I would not recommend spending much effort on putting your informative, well thought out, bright, interesting, educational, enjoyable and even entertaining content on that platform. TikTok is filled with quick takes, misinformation (and outright disinformation and even lies) and a lot of dumb stuff just to get followers and subscriptions, as opposed to real, genuine, worthwhile content. Were you to spend much effort with it, I feel that your posts there would become just another "face in the crowd", and not have the impact you strive for. Time will tell, but I was glad to see that the greatest number of your subscribers said no to TikTok. And I do look at clips and reels from TikTok and similar every day, but I take them for what they're worth without giving them too much credence. Anyhow, enough said, wishing you and yours once again a happy, healthy and pleasant new year, and many more to come. And now back to the rest of the episode.

I understand the concern but I feel that the majority of tourists can't be bothered to learn the local lingo, might find the food to be unhygienic just because of some prejudices and prefers to eat where other tourists or Instagrammers go. I feel that Gary caters mostly to people interested to go the extra mile in learning the language and getting out of the comfort zone.

Mate i am from Australia and in Bangkok just now . Totally agree about Talat Plu market because i am staying just 12 minute walk to this market . The food is amazing and dirt cheap. I,m surprised you didnt do a section on the crispy fried chicken . It is amazing . It is perfectly cooked , moist on the inside , crispy on the outside and not at all greasy . Topped with fried garlic or onion with sweet chilli sauce it is the perfect lunch snack. But dont forget to add fresh chillies . I had 2 large thighs and it cost me just 80 baht from one of the stalls in the large section of the food market

I really miss those classic rice noodle rolls with a bunch of fillings wrapped in a wide piece of rice noodle, topped with tofu and shrimp. Oh, and that stir-fried turnip cake at the end of the video? That's my absolute favourite! It's kinda unnerving to stroll down a jam-packed alley with motorcycles whizzing by so close, almost brushing past you.

Great vid, Gary! I enjoy these more concentrated vids over the livestreams. I like the interaction with the locals. Very humanizing. The lives just have too much "non-content" for my taste, and it's hard to set aside a full hour or more. I know this type of vid requires more work to edit, but it is appreciated. Wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year! 😊🎉

But still very affordable, most street food still didn't change much in prices at all. Stick to local street food vendors and stay away from glorified street foods stalls for tourists and restaurants here and you'll be fine. In front of a shopping mall near my house have street food market every evening and they're still mostly pretty darn cheap my favorite is dried egg noodles with fish balls veggies and sliced red pork for 20 baht. Thonburi Bangkok's west side is still holding hidden gems of great street food even to Thais.

Brilliant Gazza. You’re the one son. I remember doing that about 30 to 40 odd years ago in Bangkok. It’s been about 6 years since I’ve been to Bangkok. Used to stay in Silom area near Soi 20 market. But it’s changed so much when I look on KZbin. What do you recommend now? I’d like to stay near where I eat every day. I’d like to have the sort of stuff you did. Are there any good places to stay nearby. I could spend a couple of weeks there I think.

FYI, when she put extra sugar just in case if you want more sugar but if you don't like it you don't have to mix all together. You can just leave them on the side. Also, if you go other places if they add something extra and you don't want that you can just leave it like that. It doesn't mean rude don't worry 🙂

You used the chopsticks the wrong way around in the video where you were eating duck noodles at the second restaurant. You should hold the end that grabs the food and use the end that you hold to grab the food. But don't worry, it looked cute to Thais. 😁
