🌹 Note on Grade 1 Bare Root Roses: When evaluating bare root roses you've received, please understand that not every vendor lists their roses as Grade 1. Before placing an order, ensure that you understand what size is being promised. Also keep in mind that roses come in all different shapes and sizes, and some are more vigorous than others. Own root bare root roses can be lighter and smaller than a grafted rose of the same variety, but quickly catch up once planted in the garden.
One vendor that comes to mind is my beloved David Austin. David Austin doesn't guarantee that all bare root roses shipped are Grade 1. David Austin has the utmost confidence that the quality they do send will grow into a good, healthy rose and the majority of the roses they supply do adhere to the industry guidelines for Grade 1.

I got the best bareroot from witherspoon rose! Got 2 violet's pride and 1 free rose from American rose society "Francis Meiland ". I am very impressed with the size too. I talked to them on the phone while order. They are amazing and helpful. The bareroot i got are huge!!

I got Bliss Parfuma last Fall from Chamblee's, hope for big blooms this year. I am not fan of long roots because I have hard clay soil, same reason we don't use an auger...and we tried! Manual tools and a lot of energy it is what I need when planting roses. I am glad that the roots look great. Thanks Kim.

Wow those Bliss roots are awesome. I was tempted by the auger, but we have crazy big rocks in our yard and I'm afraid of it. I'm sticking to manual tools, harder work but safer for me because I'm accident prone anyway. Great video :)

It can definitely be hit or miss. I have a bulb size Power Planter auger that I used for the first time in November to plant bulbs. I ran into tooooooons of rocks from small pebbles to brick size. For the most part, when it hit a rock it almost just stopped moving. So I would know something was up and would have to switch to manual labor to get it out of the way. On a few though, it definitely twerked my wrists some, which scared me. In that case I lowered to power (torque?) and it seemed to help

Hi Kim, I received the Belinda’s Dream bareroot Rose from Witherspoon yesterday and all the canes are thinner than pencil. I called them and let them know . I also emailed them the picture. Should I tell them to replace it?

I got horrified of the big fat bud union & left & right going gigantic roots of David Austin bareroot roses..i’m putting them in 30cm planters ..2 in each..i thought no way even 1 will fit in it..i started having nightmares as i don’t want them in the ground ( i take the garden with me as i had to take it with me to countryside from London )have a permanent house now but can’t forget the past

Wow! Looks like Ken will need to auger half way to China to plant the Bliss. Do the growers who harvest these long Dr Huy root stock do it manually? Is this Bliss going in with the ones you planted next to your driveway?

Hi Kim, I talked to Witherspoon Roses about the barefoot shipment date and they said that I have to completely mound them up with mulch after planting them in the ground. The owner said that even if I plant them in late April the bareroots should be completely covered with mulch, otherwise they will die. So what should I do? Shall I delay the shipment until April 29th( the last frost date)? Please advice.

@@TheRoseGeek Thank you Kim. Today it is snowing here in Westport. It is supposed to snow tomorrow as well. So I am thinking of giving it a little more time. Since I am in the same zone as you ( 7a), I am planning to plant the bare roots in 4th week of March. Will that be late for the bareroots to develop their root system before summer? I want to give them enough time to establish their roots in the ground. Or shall I plant them 1 week earlier? If you think there is no harm then I will. I never bought bareroot roses before, only planted potted roses and bulbs of other flowers. Did you fully covered your bareroots from Witherspoon with mulch?

Hi Kim, The daytime temperatures here are now fluctuating between 50 and 60 degrees. Tomorrow it is supposed to be around 66 degree F. The nighttime temperatures are between 37 and 40 degrees mostly. So is it okay to start planting the bareroot roses in the ground? Please advice.
