Smiling Friends ALL CAMEOS Explained!

Adult Swim dropped the first season of Smiling Friends in its entirety over the past weekend and with these 8 episodes came a TON of cameos! With creators Zach Hadel (aka psychicpebbles) and Michael Cusack having humble origins on the internet, it was inevitable they'd bring some friends along for the ride!
From well known online animators such as Harry Partridge, Dave Firth, Lyle Rath of Wrath Club, Tom Fulp of Newgrounds, to KZbinrs such as Mike from RedLetterMedia, James Rolfe the Angry VideoGame Nerd and Chills, all the way to celebrities such as Finn Wolfhard and Jane Badler, here's a rundown of everyone who made a guest appearance in the new hit adult animated series!

Grease was played by Harry partridge. The role was originally meant for Chris Chan, but the network said it would be to expensive for that short of a speaking role. So they asked Harry Partridge last minute to do a quick CWC impression. About a month later CWC got arrested.

I don't think a lot of people realize how much a big deal Smiling Friends is on multiple levels when it comes from the mere fact a lot of these people got started on the internet and have never entered the film industry, yet they got a show on a major cable channel and it's going on HBO Max. A lot of these people started and made names for themselves on the internet. We are watching a resonance of creative people, whom some have self taught themselves animation and art, come together to create shows on the internet, and those show get picked up by major channels and funded to make their shows. And they got fucking creative freedom for their show. Do you know how hard that is?

The best part about these references is that they're funny even if you don't know what they're referencing, like the Chills cameo. Even if you don't know who Chills is, you'll still think the way he talks is funny. I love how even though roughly half of the comedy of the show consists of inside jokes between their friends, Zach and Michael still wrote it in a way that the comedy is accessible to someone who isn't familiar with their other work

Watching this show really reminded me of the feeling I got watching Rick and Morty for the first time when it came out in 2013, it’s just something so fresh and creative (I know it’s hard to imagine R+M being that now but at that time it felt very original) but smiling friends could never work without Zach and Michael’s full creative involvement. It’s so much of their ideas and personality that if they did any more seasons, it wouldn’t work if those two were any less involved.

Harry is in fact puddle of grease, in a podcast Michael and Zach explained that the original pick for that cameo was chrischan, for many (and obvious) reasons it wasnt possible, so they just asked Harry to make a chrischan impression.

Chris O’Neal (OneyNG/Oney Plays) voiced a couple of characters and did some of the background music. Joshua Tomar who was the voice actor in a lot of old New Grounds games and does some work for video games and English dub anime and part of Oney Plays with Zach and Lyle. and Mick Lauer (RicePirate) from SleepyCabin we’re also a couple of voices. It’s really awesome to see a group of talented friends create something amazing and weird.
