Akz1 . His teachings are designed for children to think for themselves. He does not demand the children have to believe a certain aspect of science, He always talks about testing certain beliefs. @@raysalmon6566 If judgement exists and hell isn't a fairytale, I don't suppose I'd care. When asked about the prospect of being damned to hell, Christopher Hitchens puts it this way: "The most amusing people seem to be bound that way". I guess I'll have to spend an eternity with very interesting individuals? Alternatively and also borrowing from Christopher, if you're right and I am presenced by the divine entity known as 'God', wouldn't he forgive me in all his compassionate wisdom? After all, he didn't supply me with enough evidence to believe in him. Better to live my life honestly than if I were to be a hypocrite all my life.

I do know, as a personal anecdote, that one morning in May of 2017, the extreme anxiety I had been suffering from for almost 14 years, shut off, just like it was on a timer. I bent down to pet a cat anxious, and I stood up and the anxiety had vanished. POOF! It was so remarkable I wrote it on the calendar. Similarly, at or around the same time, my bunions appeared to be asserting themselves. Quite remarkable. I always blamed it on my picking up the mood my husband had at work. But I truly believe I am particularly aware of my biological clock. As far back as I can recall, at 1 1/2 (because I can recall a particular incident and how my wet diapers felt). My dad was astounded I could remember details about something he felt that a toddler would have totally never noticed, let alone remembered.

A professor is a person doing a job. A student is paying for an education. This is a transaction. Professor being the provider and student being the customer. If the employer (university in this case) says jump through hoops to the professor and the professor deems those hoops "against his academic freedoms" he has every right to find another teaching job. Universities seem to be under the impression that the people that keep paying to be there are the ones that deserve the attention, not the professors and their "academic freedom".

@@Dr10Jeeps I would first like to point out that the apparent problem is minor at best... out of some 4000 universities in the US, there were only 60 incidents in the last several years. A lot of those were against right wing antagonistic trolls. People who deliberately do and say things just to annoy people. Students are paying a lot of money to be in these institutions of learning. I don't see how deliberately antagonizing the student body helps with their education.
@Dr10Jeeps
@Dr10Jeeps 4 жыл бұрын
@@adam346 I'm not so sure the problem is "minor at best." As a social scientist university professor (now semi retired) who has been teaching at various Canadian universities for 45 years, I do not like being placed in a position whereby I have to measure every scientific piece of evidence before talking about it in class lest I offend one or more students. Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying. I am all for discussing emotionally-charged data in a sensitive and constructive manner, but to feel that it must be suppressed because of a few students who may take offense is not the purpose of a university.

@ady nails I strongly suggest you look into Buddhism's terrible truth of the 'nothingness'. What you don't seem to comprehend is dills like Dawkins only focus on the hardware (the body ) and not the software (the mind/soul/true form of existence) This is why he is so far off what really matters if anything actually does.

I just watched an interesting documentary about bones and it showed how human jaws have gotten smaller in just centuries because of how our food has changed. So an average person has - sometimes quite a lot of - overbite. This came to my mind when someone asked what is the next adaptation with humans.

There seems to be a key difference between those talks that people boycott or when the speaker gets uninvited. Saying 'religious belief doesn't deserve respect or rights' and saying 'this group of people doesn't deserve respect or rights' is the key difference, I believe. No one should be bothered by the first - all ideas have to be discussed and all ideas are up for scrutiny, but the second one incites hatred and possibly violence towards a group of people.

Epigenetics is not only about embryonic development. It also happens during an adult life but only with bio chemical shifts and not with Lamarckian shape shifting of course. Dr. Bruce Lipton writes about it in depth. Dr. Barbara McClintock is the discovering scientist of epigenetics.

I know the debates about the culture of offense, so no need to school me. But what are the offenses in British universities that they were talking about? What are the cases that Alice maybe had in her mind at that moment? Also, why did everyone (in particular, Alice) laugh when Richard asked to quote Fry and quoted him? Btw, Fry said that in a considerably different context. And, did Alice mean in general that she doesn't let anybody know the contents of lectures in advance, or in the context of the question of Richard? So many questions...((

Many Religions do promote peace, helping others, harmony between different belief systems etc...so in general i respect religious people who strive for peace. Whether or not a supreme god/heave/hell exists is unprovable. Yet the belief in god helps people cope with death and grief. So be it, if you want to believe and are a peaceful person i consider you a friend. No one can ultimately prove one way or another so lets respect what others believe even if we believe differently.
