The entire Little Tail Bronx series is one hell of a thing. Ever since I first discovered the game in a Nintendo Power magazine and found out about the community in 2013, I've been completely hooked on the franchise and inspired me to get into artistry. And thanks to the releases of Fuga and the announcements that there's going to be a trilogy, the fan base only keeps growing stronger, with THREE whole Discord servers dedicated to LTB and a ton of artists around the internet making fanart and even a few fanfics, to boot. Hell, there's even a Black Mesa: Source/TimeSplitters: Rewind style fan remake of Solatorobo in development titled Dal Segno al Coda. That's how passionate the LTB community is for such an obscure series. Edit: The fan remake has been put on hold indefinitely, likely even cancelled outright, since November 2023. My most sincere apologies to the few people who were looking forward to it.

Solatorobo is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time. One thing I think really deserves special mention, though, is how incredibly strong and involved the worldbuilding is. Like, worldbuilding is a big part of what the devs were doing during that ten-year interim, and while the in-game lore entries do convey it really well, it's the kind of thing that draws you in ever-deeper if you look more into it. Like, you could easily watch through that huge commercial blitz they did in Japan, and even if you don't speak any Japanese, you can understand what concepts are being conveyed just through visuals and general direction. And then you have the artbooks, which not only go into the in-game stuff, but dig into the conceptual processes that the game went through. Seeing the evolution of the pitch and the concept is just amazing. I'm not surprised it's so expensive nowadays (it wasn't rare back then, but it didn't have a very extensive print run), but I highly recommend everyone check it out. It really is a fantastic game.
@MrMarinus18 Жыл бұрын
I also like these older RPG's as they couldn't rely on shiny graphics and fidelity to bamboozle people. They had to get a strong and consistent style, make optimal use of the limited graphical resources they had and had to commit to solid world building to give life to the world. Limitations create intent, they couldn't afford to just throw a whole lot of crap on the screen, they had to choose carefully. Also catridge space on the DS card was very limited so everything that didn't have to be there was cut. I feel the DS is home to some of the greatest RPG's of all time. The cartridge size especially was just perfect. It was large enough so that they didn't have to do the padding that a lot of GBA RPG's suffer from but it also not so large that the developers could just throw in a bunch of garbage without consequence.

Solatorobo had left such a massive imprint on me as a kid, I was enthralled with it's story and characters and have always been immensely heartbroken that nothing major of the series has occurred since; no remake or plans to re-release it in some form. Though I deeply appreciate that the universe exists and continues to persist with Fuga, my heart cries out to see Red and Ehl again. There is a very very small team working on a "remake" of Solatorobo in Unreal with fixes to the combat and extra stuff, the project is small- just like the Little Tail Bronx fandom, but they're there and I seriously recommend checking em' out. Only small progress has been made, but they did show some of the concept art and mechanics on their page.

I'm one of the weird guys who actually saw maketing of that game and bought it on release when I was a kid. I feel like this game actually had a bigger push in France than in other regions (I wonder why). I remember seeing adds for it in BD and manga as well as video game related magazines, which were still somewhat relevant at the time. Probably one of my favorite DS game, and one of the rarest game I have in my collection. I don't even think I can think of a game that rival its ambition and scope on the console. Also since you were wondering the french voice acting does sound like japanese voice actors trying to speak in a language they aren't familiar with. The dialogue is clear and understandable but you can hear the japanese accent. Fuga is the same except for the narrator, which is a real well known french voice actor btw. She is the french voice of Breath of the Wild Zelda and Ellie from The Last of Us for example.

I absolutely feel Tail Concerto should be experienced first because it’s just so thematically different than Solatorobo and Fuga and that change in tone is a great twist for people who come in at the beginning. It comes off so lighthearted and detached from any of the lore and backstory to the world the series takes place in, which is such a nice contrast to the sad, backstory-laden Solatorobo and the distressing, war-torn Fuga.

EYYYY! This game was my jam! You've earned yourself a subscriber, you other Solatorobo fan! One thing that I have to say about this game is the artstyle. It looks GORGEOUS. Sure, it's hindered a tad by DS compression, but it the 2.5d look of the backgrounds? Chef's Kiss! It's so vibrant! From the training grounds of Mau, to the buggy Visla, to the mines of Shetland, there's so much variety! Probably the one thing that inspired me to be a concept artist in a... related project. Also, just gotta mention the DISGUSTING number of novels artbooks that we've got! There are SEVERAL fully translated lore books that we have lying around if you'd want to take a read! From Gren slapping Opera and Calua, to extra hybrids not discussed in the game, to Nero and Blanck being uhhh well goo goo gaga, or how Quinne's fully involved, there's no shortage of extra content that no one ever reads! (And also don't tell CC2 about Little Tail Revival pls)

I played Tail Concerto many years ago so when I heard Solatorobo was coming out I grabbed it at launch. I'm a huge fan of the story and setting for the series, and was shocked at the turns the story took, it's length, character development, mech customization, the addition of new mechs, as well as the lore added to the world. I still can't believe this was all crammed onto a DS cartridge. Thank you for sharing your review, and I'm glad you also enjoyed it.

Little Tail Bronx is a silent actor within the otaku sphere. It has been used to mobilize communities surrounding the kemono subgenre, network small devs from around the globe and challenge the incompetent whims of what publishers allow to succeed. As exemplified at 10:44 and 34:38, If there's proof that gaming is part of an information ecosystem within the collective unconscious, this would be it. As stated, the best way to propel this overlooked paragon to the heights it deserves is to support the FUGA trilogy. Also, considering that much of Tail Concerto started out as a corollary to echo the .hack series, I would recommend also putting support behind it.

Having played this myself, I have to say that Basset is my favorite island in the whole game. That theme is just so somber and melancholy, fitting for a slum like this, but the people who live there are the polar opposite. On top of how significant it is to the story on both visits, the place just feels nice to hang around in. Which is definitely an accomplishment for a slum built on shipwrecks.

If the RPG you are talking about is Xenoblade 2, there's not a chance it was inspired by this. Most of us went in expecting a twist like that because Xeno games are always post apocalyptic stories of our real world earth or universe/species. It's a bit of a funny coincidence they also used the same massive ocean trope as this game, Baten Kaitos, Wind Waker and Mega Man Legends and that this game was also post apocalyptic though. Realistically the cloud sea most likely came from Zelda (or possibly a callback to Baten Kaitos) since Monolithsoft was asked to come in and save BOW from its development hell, so Xenoblade 2 was developed as they were simultaneously immersing themselves in Zelda lore.

If you have not played the game I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. As a person who picked it up when it first came out, let me tell you that everything said in this video is true. This game feels like going into a humble little family restaurant, ordering affordable food, then being served the best meal of your life, with a drink that you didn't even know about that, after your first sip, suddenly becomes your new favorite drink. *SPOILERS* "This is it!" I thought to myself, having just beat the final boss Bruno in his final form. I thought about how dang good this game was, and listened through the entire credits as beautiful music gently accompanied the touching pictures that lingered on the top screen. I thought about how much I'd like to replay the game, what ways I could accomplish tasks faster, maybe even try to "Speedrun" the game. The credits ended on a touching note, and the screen went dark- but only for a moment. I was confused- is that the title menu, but blank? Then, my eyes went wide: "New Story Unlocked." I had no idea what that meant, my mind started racing, if it has simply said "New Game" then I'd assume it was just another lap but with harder enemies, like the Legend of Zelda staple mode Master Quest- but no! "New Story!" Could it be an epilogue? I hurriedly selected it, not knowing that I had only played the first half of the journey of my soon to be favorite DS title ever. Thank you for covering this game. A work of art like it should be- no, it NEEDS to be accessible and known to future generations of gamers. I'm thankful that I was able to get a copy when I was younger, and I've put two entire 100% runs through, WITH the New Game Plus mode where you can restart the story with the mecha you unlocked from the previous playthrough. AND IT CAME WITH A SOUNDTRACK CD, LIKE WHAT?!?!

I don't know if it's just me, but these two games draw some similarities to the Klonoa games. Not only is the graphical and mechanical parts of the game that got cramped onto a ds utterly impressive; The different mixtures of mediums, between beautiful background drawings that awoke with it's pixelated style some beautiful memories of the original FF7 backgroundart (also FF9 including some Background characters that reminded me too of some beloved characters from that era) but also, clearly drawn sprites turned into smooth not immersion breaking animations (like the little transition where the townies flee after being attacked), the impressive 3D models that also merge so beautifully into the artstyle and the background without looking too much out of place (which sadly alot of Ds games and 3Ds games suffered from and did not even closely looked as polished or as harmonic as this title while using some old industry techniques of mixing some more natural looking and especially more storagespace friendlier alternatives to pure 3D modeling without losing any quality in the creative visions and the endproduct. It's a more time consuming, production costly and especially trickier process of tweaking the game to fit onto the cardridge if you keep in mind all the little cutscenes and different codes/transcripts for each medium to function like wanted.) plus even animated cutscenes that weren't crammed into ugly 3D models instead. All of this just makes you forget that this is an DS GAME. Not 3Ds or atleast a much more modern handheld release. IT'S ON A DS. The thing that spawned us stuff like Ace Attorney that not only had those short idle animations due to cost-cuts but also because the cardridge was just a small little storage where people weren't too sure yet how too max out it's potential yet. And even with launching that late into the ds lifespan I'm still blown away that it wasn't developed for it's predecessor. Also the story...wow, for someone that is used to square enix beloved wild Settings and plottwists, it wasn't anything that I did expect nor seemed to alien for me to understand compared to many storylines and thosen twists of the FF games (as example FF10 or 9) especially if you keep in mind that it's designed for kid to teen audience, that has to somehow be able to follow the story. It came for me as unexpected as clearly and easy to follow without me feeling like it's an predictable or washed down plot. In comparison even how much I endeared and still do, the story of FF10 and its twist, it was still a bit too hard to follow, seemed sometimes to wild and alien for me to wrap my head around and understand wth is going on, especially when I used to be a child. Now as an adult I understand it more but it's still alot of crazy things going on that make it hard for me to follow and wrap my head around without loosing track. Absolutely a pluspoint and smth I did not expect when clicking on this video, especially thanks to the way of your narration without giving away anything of the unexpected fakeout (which i didn't even saw coming due to me being so indulged in it that i didn't keep an eye on the length of the video.) I'm not only baffled that I stumbled upon a sudden gem I definitely going to check out to play by myself but also a new channel I gotta have to binge through! Good sire, you just won yourself a new excited subscriber that just stumbled upon this video and especially your content for the first time! Keep it up!

I played Tail Concerto on PS1 back during it's era, and when I first saw Solatorobo, I was immediately hyped. The hype died down when I thought it would never come stateside, then rose again when I found out it was coming! I preordered as soon as I could and it still sits as one of my favorite games that I will NEVER part with. This video got an instant like and fav when I saw the title.

This game blew me away. I was binging some jrpg's a couple of years ago and it's then that I discovered this gem. Along with radiant historia, magical vacation and magical starsign. I highly recommend radiant historia, original or remaster. It has immaculate gameplay and story and became my favorite game

Some of the characters and the machines design looks inspired by the ghibli movies aesthetic

I tried to buy a copy of this when it was new. Found it in a Kmart bargain bin. Every game I had picked up was missing from the case. Still have never found another copy at a decent price.

I still have this gem with music CD and carboard box safely tucked away. I scored it at launch and it sure got super rare later. I am super hoping that the game gets a remaster treatment once they are done with the FUGA series.

i'm gonna come back to finish this video after i play the game. ever since i was introduced to Little Tail Bronx and played Fuga: Melodies of steel, i've been obsessed with this world and the characters; can't wait for Fuga's sequels EDIT: Just finished the main story. The sequence where Red goes through the simulations is my favorite part. Though the movement in this game is kinda fucking woncky, I absolutely adored playing this game and experiencing the story. If CC2 ever gets the chance to remake this and Tail Concerto, Imma grab that day 1

I've never heard of this series before but damn it seems like a banger when it comes to the story/lore. I also noticed that the prequel game (Fuga) you talked about at the end has manga adaptation! The mangaka is someone I follow on social media and he has tweeted about it few times. I only realized after watching the video that the manga was about this series. What it comes to personal forgotten/hidden gem DS/3DS games, Level-5's Inazuma Eleven- and Danball Senki (known as LBX in the West)-series comes to mind! Inazuma Eleven is a soccer JRPG and it's just as wild as it sounds. Players use over the top special moves in the field and can call out avatars, fuse with historical beings and even turn into animal in the 6th instalment of the series (that sadly never got localized) Danball Senki/LBX on the other hand is series released on PSP and 3DS about people playing with small robots in stages made in cardboard boxes! It's kinda similar to Gundam Buil Fighters and MegaMan Battle Network-series in concept. The story is also bonkers wild, the third game in series literally titled "Danball Senki Wars". Sadly only first game in the series got localized in the west, known as LBX (Little Battlers eXperience), but it's one of my favorite series. The games also sadly have kinda horrible voice acting in English versions and the fact they've changed characters names to more Western ones doesn't help.

Great video! Solatorobo is an awesome game. You say you want a suggestion..hm.. For RPGs, I’d say Legend of Legacy on 3DS and/or Alliance Alive on 3DS/Switch. Good games, great DS-style nostalgic look to them, in a way. Cool stories, interesting concepts and overall solid games. if you want something *really* experimental, play Outer Wilds. Freakin’ incredible story. Little janky to play, just give it some time. Lots of reading and putting together the dots, then trying things out. Don’t feel pressured. It’s worth playing.

Thanks for introducing this hidden game, it's really a hidden gem in the ds library. Also i really enjoyed the game a lot both from gameplay and story.

The fact that I watched this video in it’s entirety without looking away for a moment really says something compared to some other videos that have me passed out 10 minutes in.

The Little Tail Bronx series is peak furry media. Change my mind. Kinda sucks there's not more games like it. Also, since you've asked for some game reccs, I reccomend playing Magical Starsign, another hidden gem Nintendo DS RPG with the same artist as Trials of Mana and Fragile Dreams, an exploration-based anime RPG for the Wii.

I'm glad these games are reaching a wider audience, I just desperately wish Fuga stuck to the large sprawling worlds of Tail Concerto and especially Solatorobo. It overall felt like a massive step down in virtually every aspect except the "gameplay" which strikes as aggressively "above average" in the turn-based JRPG sphere, but also bogged down by relentless farming the vast majority of which only drip-feeds you generic dialogue. It's hard to feel like that game got the same love and care Solatorobo did when it practically recoils at the idea of ambition, and they're releasing a sequel hardly two years later; it reeks of copy paste and the trailer isn't reassuring... Anyways, one of my all-time favorite worlds in gaming, even if I do feel they're missing the point now.

Thanks for pointing me to this "Little Tail Bronx" series. Just started Fuga and the vibes and world from it. and from Solatorobo. Defo up my ally! Also REALLY good video!

39:57 Yeah, uh, I did a bit of research. CC Corp is the overarching villainous force of the .hack franchise and the ones responsible for its main RPG setting, and they're known for being incompetent, corrupt and everywhere in between. So if Solatorobo was a smash hit for THIS version of them… uh oh.

This game RULED. I played it when I was a kid and, even though we're not getting direct sequels, I'm happy that they're still making stories in this universe. Great vid.

DS library is amazing and this game is pure GEM. Tail Concerto for PS One is also one of the best games for the system, and even better than Megaman Legend.

Watching this was a massive punch to the face. I played Solatorobo on the DS and got hooked on the story the entire way through. I'm still playing through Fuga and knew that there was a sequel but the news about it being a trilogy is a major bright spot in my day! It's great to see more people experiencing this game and the world that's being built! Now I just have to find my copy and play through the game again!
