@@coruscant100From playing World Four, the only one I will say annoyed me is the bat stage. Least with a majority of the Rocket (and to extend, minecart) stages, you can at least learn the track better & know where to go & pick up collectibles along the way. With the end of the bat stage, it can be easy to fuck it up for both getting hit and/or miss collectibles. I really enjoy the rocket & mine cart stages, but that one I can say is the only one I did not have fun in. Imagine my grin seeing that SAME BAT frozen in Tropical Freeze; just that detail alone makes me thing the devs knew we hated it, making it feel that much funnier.

@@alvaroperez2349 One of the first videos I ever saw on KZbin was of Rainiac’s DKC2 LP, specifically a compilation of his top deaths in the LP, and the number one death was him (or rather the guy he was playing co-op with) dying right before a continue barrel in one of the marsh levels. If I had to guess they didn’t save at Kong Kollege except in the previous world. The pained “Noooo!” as they failed to make it and Rambi leapt into the water still lives with me rent-free. Right there with another clip from that compilation of them dying right before the end of the last below deck stage with that angler fish thanks to that one porcupine marching back and forth.

Ah, yes, Peaceful Pier, a great example of exact words at play. The pier itself is perfectly peaceful; it's when you leave the pier that things start to get wild. Missed puzzle pieces: 8 (1 new) 2-3 Right at the very start of the level; blow on the grass to find the puzzle piece.

I played some of this game with my brother but I remember at some point we just started playing it on separate files individually... I remember why now, Tim and Jon were having some trouble with Tim jumping ahead and leaving Jon no room to navigate, I suppose a split-screen functionality would be weird especially with how certain obstacles work but it's unfortunate that this game just isn't built all too well for multiplayer even though it's really fun individually. I also remember the rocket barrel stages, this one always gave me trouble and it's only the first one... props to Emile for beating it in one go.

Don’t let the fact that Colosseum is next week distract you from how unforgiving Rocket Barrels are in this game. With Tropical Freeze you can take more than one hit even against the environment while in DKC3 you’re allowed to hit maybe one wall or two tops and still not be screwed out of making it to the end of that level. Here, it’s one and done.

1:30 Emile talking about DK being the worst in his own series (both here and episode 1) highlights an issue I have with the DK series in general- there's no reason to pick certain characters (besides DK64 which forces you to use them all, especially for 101% completion) because some are just objectively better. With the Mario series, Mario himself typically has no special abilities, but that's balanced by other characters having their own drawbacks- he's not the best in any given situation, but he's not the worst, and he's a safe choice if you don't know what the game will throw at you (or if the game throws multiple things at you). That's generally the case with jack-of-all-stats characters; they're the boring option but they're a reliable option. The DK series on the other hand gives every character nearly the exact same moves as DK with even more stuff on top. Their only drawbacks are extremely situational (or in Diddy's case in Returns, nonexistent). Anything DK can do, the others can do better. I know he's not even playable in 2 or 3, but if he's being outclassed by KIDDY KONG then something's wrong. Wow, that got long. I guess thanks for listening to my TED Talk?

I think in the first DKC the developers thought they balanced the 2 characters properly because DK has no problem jumping on big enemies. But then that is a rare need whereas Diddy can often dispose of them in other ways. Then DK holds the barrel in a way that is worse and then his slow speed makes some platforming unnecessarily hard. So for the sequel they must have decided that DK wasn't a very good character to play as, so instead of changing him up and potentially make the game too easy or something, they instead decided to try again at the balancing thing with Diddy and Dixie. However they sorta made the same mistake there too, as Dixie is really good to use with her propeller hair whereas Diddy is only barely faster and has nothing else going for him. So the Main DK character was the worst of the 2 in both games. Then DKC3 seemed to reverse that. For the new games it feels like Retro decided that DK is SUPPOSED to be worse and that playing with JUST him is the hard mode. Whereas I never felt that Rare intentionally made him worse off. I kinda like the idea, since Diddy now acts like Mario's Raccoon suit, a power up that you carry with you but lose if you take too much damage. It's only a problem because of this game being multiplayer, though they expected it to be the scenario that someone was playing with their younger sibling so the younger one would need the better abilities while the older one was slowed down by not having them, so they cooperate better. Obviously that isn't the case most of the time so its usually 2 people of similar skill levels playing, and one is having a harder time.

Both this game and Tropical Freeze have this weird quirk, wherein one of the best of the few original songs in the game only appear in a very small section and thus are overlooked. Sloppy Sands is this game's one, but to make it clear the song you hear throughout the stage IS NOT what I'm talking about, otherwise it wouldn't qualify because its just the stage's music and not anything obscure. What I'm talking about is the short section where the Letter G is and has the bucket platform and spinning platform. This very short section before the end has an original song that is probably one of the best in the soundtrack. Yet you are very unlikely to pay attention enough to remember or take notice of it because its in a short section that is the easiest part of the level, so you blaze through. Tropical Freeze also has one that is even worse because its really nice but exists in only 1 level at the VERY beginning, and the song changes to the rest of the Stage's theme after you jump into the water that exists 2 feet from the start. So the only possible way to enjoy the full song is to purposefully not play the game when you start the level. Very sad that these 2 songs don't get more play, especially when songs will sometimes get reused a couple of times so there isn't any reason not to reuse these underused songs.

To me the optimal way to play the Retro Studios games is not only to ignore the puzzle pieces, but ignore all the weird little collecting setpieces they scatter around the levels in general. It's a little agonizing watching them move through the levels super slowly pounding every little thing they see, playing every little get-all-the-bananas game they come across, all for a bunch of basically worthless collectables. I'm Team Chugga, the only items that really matter are the KONG letters. The original trilogy didn't have all these awkward little diversions scattered everywhere, or at worst was much more focused with it, so I really don't understand why the Retro games do (or why it wasn't tightened up at all in the sequel)

Its kinda like in Mario you usually only get 2 hits, though its 3 with a powerup nowadays. Though it should be noted that in single player you still keep Diddy's health, so its 4 hits total which is plenty.
