Did you remember to tie the end of the chain on when you finished with a short length of rope
@TheSailingBrothers Жыл бұрын
I connected to the end of the chain to the shackle in the bottom of the locker 🤙
@grahamlongley8298 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSailingBrothers I was told by an old blue water sailor, to use a length of rope. This is so that if I had to cast off in an emergency, I could lash a fender to the chain & just cut the line (Which would be long enough to reach on deck) Then go back for the chain later on. I do not know if this has ever happened to anyone, or why they would need to dump the anchor. But as I sail SH if I did not have time to grovel in the locker I can see the sense in having the rope.
@kevinktthomas8916 Жыл бұрын
@@grahamlongley8298 Yes, this is correct. If a storm comes up you might have to let out all your chain to avoid dragging the anchor. But if that still doesn’t work and you’re on a lee shore you’re going to want to motor out of there, very possibly without enough time to gather in all your chain (against a wind that might be too much for your capstan/windlass). So if your ‘bitter end’ - this is where that phrase derives - can be cut free and left recoverable floating on a couple of fenders you’ll be able to get away much quicker than trying to undo a shackle in the bottom of the chain locker. youtube.com/@TheSailingBrothers well done on another great episode!
