I agree with the caller about calling women "Karen". I find it to be nearly as misogynist as calling one's wife "hysterical", as an excuse to throw her in an asylum.

cheese has addictive qualities to it so it can be difficult to give up completely. when i went vegan it was the most difficult part for me and i slipped up several times. now i'm at the point where the thought of cheese or dairy of any kind is disgusting to me and i don't even consider it food. it might as well be snot. i do appreciate that you're honest about it and still trying your best.

I had been a vegetarian for 20 years when I finally gave up dairy. Cheese was hard to let go, but there are now many amazing vegan cheeses thankfully though mostly only for at home, diaya is the only one I've seen at restaurants on pizza & I don't love their shreds. Though almost an hour north of me in NJ is a vegan deli with the full range of deli plant based meats & cheeses I hope to get to sometime.

I agree with the woman who mentioned "Karen." Think Sarah needs to give her comment more thought. It seems like a term that is used to dismiss any white woman out of hand. Believe it or not, caucasian women, sometimes, have a reason to be upset.

Would you be comfortable with an equivalent of Karen for any other minority? What about casualing telling an entitled male muslim "don't be a Jamal" ?. What about a term for entitled rich gays "don't be a Kyle", or for entitled straight jews "don't be an Adam"? I don't feel at all comfortable with any of these. But I really don't see how they are different from picking a surname that is typical of a minority, the minority of being a woman, "Karen", and using it in a pejorative way with the excuse you are thinking about a intersectional priviledge of white women, if you would not do this for other minorities that have an intersectional priviledge, like rich jews, male muslims, non handicapped transgenders, etc etc. Besides, seeing women's advocating for their rights as "entitled" or "bossy" while we see men as simply assertive for the same behavior is still a huge problem today, and Karen has just became a synonym for the sexist term bossy in the way it is often used, as if it was ok to tell women they are bossy cause they are white. It is not an ok term, it is a sexist one, and that should be very clear.

Aww hugs. It's ok to end up eating animal products sometimes. I have once in a while in a "scavenger" way. I am mostly vegan as well (I get eggs from a local farmer & I'm ok with honey). The important thing is you care about animals & their well being and you are not causing more to be treated poorly.

I've been doing that off and on for years because I'm fascinated with linguistics and culture. I'd mostly get side eyes from men and accused of emphasizing a feminist agenda right off the bat. I try to explain that I just use it because that's my personal default, but it comes off like I'm trying to make a point. So there is definitely an awkwardness when folks are not expecting it, which is kind of annoying. It gets old because then the conversation would shift to be about gender all of a sudden a lot of times. Reminds me how those used to having the world built around them can't handle it when anything changes, even something as innocuous as using womanpower instead of manpower, etc.
@MadAboutBrows3 жыл бұрын
I've been seeing more and more that Karen gets thrown around, especially by doods, any time they dont like what a woman is asserting, or arguing against.
@myroncope53 жыл бұрын
Karen is a euphemism for c-word and it sucks that both are used improperly
@myroncope53 жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed that, but i don't doubt you. But out of all the karen viral videos, most of them are about everything from rich white WASP women disrespecting retail employees to rich white WASP women putting black people's lives in danger by calling the police on them. The last "karen" video i saw involved a white woman who tried to hit a black woman in a store, who then proceeded to throw a toddler level temper tantrum, then called police, and the police did what they usually do, protect rich white women from black people. Most people who have the problem with the term karen (not you) are themselves rich white women who are afraid of losing their power to start a tulsa style massacre of black people by blowing a false rape whistle on a black man. So karen karen karen, unless it's being used in the way you suggest

While I understand your point I think your language experiment is a product of cultural bias in modern English speaking feminism that confuses linguistic form with one’s own feelings about that form and it replaces the meaning of the form with one’s own feelings which, in point of fact, have no connection with the form. In other words, your imputing the meaning of your feelings inappropriately on the form of the language. People who feel excluded are simply ignoring the actual meaning of words like mankind which are universal or even fireman since fireman is specific. Until relatively recently that job was males only with very rare exceptions. Even now there are not that many firewomen but nothing stops anyone from using the term. I don’t think other languages have this kind of complaint because people have a better understanding of the actual language itself.
@pia_mater3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your comment but your last paragraph is unfortunately incorrect. I speak Portuguese and I've heard my whole life that Portuguese is a "sexist" language because it favors the masculine gender more than the feminine one (all words are gendered)

Great pod but do you really need to run so many ads!? Just do 1 at the start and 1 at the end - the amount of advertising spoils it. Plus you're already a millionaire innit!
@VeganTrove3 жыл бұрын
I have a thought experiement: folks, just imagine all the ads, the references to heteronormativity in movies, books, in life and replace it with LGBTI references. Imagine if everything you watch and read was lgbti references. See how it feels. That's what most lgbti folks have to endure everyday day all day 👀🙂
