This League of Legends Clone Got Sued But Still Won't Die

So let us tell you about a little game called Mobile Legends.
It's basically a mobile rip off of League of Legends released back in 2016 and everyone just laughed at it. It's a bit of a meme.
But it's no joke to Riot. They've been through the legal system in two different countries to stop what they see as a blatant copy of their game.
It's a strange and funny story, but what's happened since the legal cases has been even stranger than you can possibly imagine.

League pc is a potato game that can run on toasters, wild rift seems like it takes more power to play than pc league. The mobile market is different from the pc market and every league player I know doesn't play wildrift because it's a whole different game to pc. I played ML in highschool and stopped during college, and it really is a lot of fun to play, whether you pay for skins or just casually play, wanna waste time or play with your friends, heck, the best moments I had was playing it with my friends pre-covid. It really is all about accessibility and "who came first". If Riot capitalized on the Mobile MOBA craze, made Wild Rift before Moonton did, it would've been a very different case.

Two things as a ml player.. Its casual friendly. Promotes people to play with each other close irl rather than online like discord or some westerners since they are far away. And the difficulty. Since its on phones you have to understand the faster the game is the better, the mentality in regions plays too. This is just for their leisure and they wont play unlike other people. Normally only 1-3 hrs. While other games for just onematch takes 1 hr or 40mins.

The difference is even if League started off as a DotA copy, they eventually evolved into their own thing -- the aesthetic, gameplay, and characters look different. You can put a DotA and LoL screenshot side by side and you can figure out which is which. ML is currently doubling down on how close they want to be to LoL, specifically WR, which is a detriment to their game. They keep applying things that mimic WR's content and mechanics without understanding its purpose. They gave one of their marksman characters, Kimmy, a clunky marker that doesn't work because the direction of her shots is delayed when you turn. It just makes her confusing to play. There was absolutely NOTHING wrong with her old AoE display, but they put that marker because... WR did it. And they really do have a hard-on for WR. These massive overhauls of unnecessary changes came when WR came out. It's so blatant, it's disgusting. And don't get me started on the song copies, it so cringe. I don't understand how they're the "number 1 moba" in SEA, yet have THE absolute worst cinematics and graphics. My IQ dropped when an ML ad played showing 2 of their characters having a fart battle. They just seem so devoid of creativity. Say what you want about League, but you can't deny the amount of passion that goes into their music and art. ML should just stick to being their own thing. Stay casual, just keep churning out hot white babes and dudes, find their own unique look, focus on balancing their shit roster that gets outdated really fast (they revamped a character last year into an Aatrox copy only to have that character be a candidate AGAIN for a revamp because no one was using her), and stop panicking over WR because their market is different.

As much as how I hated MLBB when it was newly released, I became one of its loyal followers simply because of how they manage their community. They spend their money on the game improvement and support content creators to spread their game rather than spend much on advertisements (this is maybe why they have shit advertisements). One more reason why people are sticking to MLBB is that the game is relatively easier to play, casuals can play the game however they want and pros can focus on communication and strategy. As long as the game is still improving, there will be no reason for me to stop playing unless ofcourse if I will become busier.

However, today, the ML game itself is very different from the WR game; the lane phasing, meta, emphasis, hero balancing, toxicity. I'm from Philippines and in my opinion, Mobile Legends just became popular because it's on mobile. League of Legends is very popular in our country but it is just played by majority of people in computer cafes. Almost all people has phones but not PCs. Yeah, especially taking into account the learning curve for Wild Rift. In ML it's quite easy to pick it up, but you really have to invest your time and effort with Wild Rift. You get punished harshly for the tiniest mistakes. That's probably why ML has more players, since most of their demographic just prefers casual gaming. If Riot had placed Wild Rift earlier, then it probably wouldn't be too difficult for players to have adapted to it's game style.

I am directly involved in this market as a content creator from Cambodia. Yes, MLBB straight out copied LoL:WR but I don't see WR hitting hard anytime soon. As good as LOL on PC is, LOL: WR on mobile, Riot is doing very very very little in comparison to their photocopied game. Moonton knows how to hit the market, they jump straight in with locale language, locale content, working directly with content creators with monthly in-game diamonds as rewards. In Asia, we all speak diff langauge, so having a game setting it up in our respective countries and marketing to our "traditions" is a huge deal, as if the player feels like this game is from "My Country". Riot Wildrift on the other hard, decided to give up on some markets already still only sticking to BIGGER markets where they are not winning either. Not to mention, Moonton found a way to make it so new players can play their game with ease, ANYONE CAN PLAY. Compared to Wild Rift, you need some base understanding of MOBA or LOL. It's like, Riot made the amazing presentation for school project but don't know how to present it to the class, but Moonton is a professional salesman.

As much as I would love to believe this, vainglory killed itself for a number of reasons. Terrible marketing, the game doesn't have a lot of monetization meaning the devs couldn't really sustain it, expensive esports events which only made it more difficult for the devs to sustain the game, and finally it was just too good for its time. Most devices during the time vainglory was released were potatoes and couldn't keep up with vainglory's demanding graphics which probably drove some people away from the game. That said, I will always remember my main kestrel and all the cross map kills I've gotten with her ult.

Been playing both games for years now, TBH (from an unbiased stand point) both games are very fun to play, ML is more on the micro side and LoL is very much on macro side, ML and League has one in many of its goals and that's to bring happiness in gaming it's surprising on how ML has a lot of hate from the league community and vice versa, some are blinded by their biases and doesn't want to accept the fact that both of these games brings joy to their playerbase why not try playing the other game to see what's it like it could be fun

After Wild rift got released i already notice that most ml player who started on ml and not league of legend are having a bit of trouble adjusting to they mostly go back to ml and most player who played lol before ml are the one who sticked to wr. tldr most of mobile legend's players are more comfortable at ml because it's where they started (and probably wasted too much money on skin). That's why the community is split.

This whole ML dominating the southeast asian region is a clear reminder that its people are hungry for "attention". I don't mean it in a bad way as I'm one of its people too but what I'm basically saying is we are too under represented in almost every aspect of E-sports and any other entertainment industry to be general. Many Garena users complained when TFT mobile wasn't connected to their pc accounts, they also complained in the past of poor handling of the game like multiple server issues, login queues, poor customer support etc. Imo Riot has completely ignored the SEA scene that made SEA orgs invest into other esports like Dota2, Crossfire, and yes even MLBB. If only Riot listened to the pleas of Garena users since 2014-15 then maybe we can live on a timeline where Moonshit doesn't have a complete stanglehold of the region.
