When Did CS Util Get So Big-Brained?

Utility has always been the very lifeblood of Counter-Strike.
But in recent years, the utility ‘arms race’ has gone sort of nuclear.
It’s gotten to the point where the 'nades people throw aren’t just optimal - they’re impossible.
So, we had to ask, how did CS become this big-brained?

With the removal of map ceilings, ability to open up a map and have a util guide provided with no external tools and also all the changes they are making to util in general, it is clear that their intent is to bring this all to the next level while also making it as acessible as possible to players who want to learn it.

If I could pick 1 specific round that changed the course of CS history, it's Astralis vs. Fnatic 14-15. People knew how to use smokes / throw grenades back then. But they made revolutionary changes to the game which brought more attention to this aspect of the game. That one round defines CS at its core.

I play in a group that mainly plays nuke, and a year and a half ago we didn't need any util to do pretty well at our admittedly lower level of play. Now we're learning lineups because if we don't use any, we're hard stuck taking insanely difficult fights while the clock ticks down. Decent utility has trickled down to even the lowest levels of CS that it's harder for someone who's naturally talented to just stomp without them being set up by their teammates.
@mark030531
@mark030531 Жыл бұрын
I think what lower ranked players haven't figured out is timing flashes both as the point guy and the flash thrower. It sounds easy enough as a concept, but the correct pop position and timing on the thrower's side and the quick decision-making needed by the point man (and aim of course) makes it arguably more complicated than simple smoke lineups and sets. Many CS:GO and Valorant players still have no idea how to use flashes that benefit their team the most and often just use them to delay enemies. Coming from a pro CS background, many of my friends from outside the scene don't realize just how much I make things easier for them by knowing the best way to utilize flashes by reading the current situation on the map.

Likely for several reasons. One, dropping utility has only been around for maybe two years, which is a short time within CS. And two, we haven't been able to measure any dramatic impacts on play. In order to effectively use dropped utility as a CT, for example, they first have to use all of their *existing* utility -- we all know how that goes (CT dies after throwing one molly and the other un-picked up utility lays around for Ts to scoop up).

Fnatic even invented the Banana smoke from CT side Inferno (i think it was before Astralis even existed). It was a spawn based decision who was the guy to throw. It gave Fnatic such an advantage and got patched some weeks later, if I'am not wrong, its been many years in the past. I think the big thing with Valorant is the use of abilities as a whole being one of the main factors of progression in the game; with so many abilities and new agents / metas coming out, people don't prioritise mastering the ones with lineup potential as there are varied playstyles with varied agent roasters for every match, too many factors going on make lineups unamusing / "cringe" but I'm sure in years to come the best of the best will prioritise these lineups and make that concept become meta. Edit: I'd like to add that smokes which are the main util used for lineups in CSGO, aren't something you need lineups for in Valorant (Aside from Harbour and Viper orb/smoke), hence why there's less lineups in general currently.

Also the fact that a lot of agents have reaction based, range limited util, the spike’s long refusal time, and the agents with lineup potential have kits loaded with defuse denial tools making it frustrating while in CS it’s mostly smokes that has crazy lineups, nades have low damage and range and mollies also have limited range and you can only carry 1 of them with damage slowly building rather than instant max damage.

@@d1ffch viper’s kit is kinda absurd for how good it is. 2 mollies that makes you take x2 damage combined with 2 decay abilities makes any maps with post plants lineups a nightmare. @dov2951
@dov2951 Жыл бұрын
@@kaeroseon that's true vipers molly and even brims molly + ult combo is crazy to come by but these mechanics have slowly been counteracted somewhat as the newer maps (like lotus c site and b site) have made lineup playstyles hard due to covered roof areas, as well as most lineups being in predictable spots that a flank lurker can catch off-guard. Although both fortunately and unfortunately in the case of Brim you'll only really see him on Fracture and maybe Bind.

Astralis are the ones to changed the utility game forever, but I believe it was more about the HE nade rather than utility as a whole. People knew lineups and how to execute sites. It wasn't just shooting and runnig. HEs used to me so underrepresented, they felt useless and Astralis manage to give them purpose. Most of the Astralis clips you put in here show that exceptional nade usage.

I think part of the reason why nades weren't as important in the earlier days of CSGO was how nerfed the utility is compared to 1.6 (idk about Source). 1.6 nades dealt a lot of damage, and could even affect players through walls like all other weapons. Flashes didn't blind players like they did in earlier games. While GO's utility is a lot more dynamic and can reach further in comparison, they need more precision to use. Hence slowly smokes and other utility evolved to be more precise and could be set better. And then Astralis used them to their full potential.

Ever since I started playing CSGO nades have been a major thing. There is a huge leap forward in terms of its usage, but I feel like you're grossly underestimating them back then. Line ups and good utility usage were prominent even in 2015-16.
@naycnay
@naycnay Жыл бұрын
He's talking about their tactical advantage. Lineups back then were fairly stale, they'd use set smokes to block off prominent areas, rotations and assist with entry. It was like a set of smokes was used to attempt a specific, pre-planned play and lots of them were the same. Throw smoke to A, B and C, flash D, run out X entrance and stick to the right, take the 1vs4 fight, find the other guy and set up camp. Grenades and fires were used primarily to defend against rushes. The game changed when utility became more dynamic, especially for the Ts. Astralis didn't just line up classic utility executions to make a covered passage to breach a site. They lined up smokes to disrupt where the enemy played and forced them out into the open, taking away their advantage (particularly CTs) of holding angles and crossfires and being more susceptible to other utility like flashes. Whilst other teams would smoke the awper's vision, Astralis used them to hide the barrage of nades aimed at them, meaning the awper didn't move from their favourite spot thinking all was good, until they were dead.

I forget who it was but the Molly to prevent the full wall of smokes on Nuke was amazing to see :) Nowadays it seems everyone does smokes from mini to garage, is this to stop the use of a molly to nullify a smoke (cause the smokes are closer together or something) ? Anyway, good vid but a pity you didn't give a shoutout to or show a short clip of NadeKings great vids, he's done so much to help everyone no matter their Rank. did nobody throw nades or sum before astralis one first major?
@kiramaticc
@kiramaticc Жыл бұрын
People did throw nades, it just wasn't optimized. They were very predictable and you didn't have layered timings of utility throughout a round. This is clearest to see if you watch an old pro inferno game from 2014/2015 and compare it to how inferno is now. Teams nowadays get the maximum possible effectiveness out of utility because of Astralis. Every team knows how to efficiently counter AWPs, teams get really good nade damage due to better lineups and more varied timings on when they throw them, the timings on when to throw smokes is way better now, etc.

As a kz player, I seriously love the dedication that monesy has put into movement. I've seen countless top players from all over the world come in and try to improve their movement and out of the all the players I saw, monesy is one of three* players who actually took movement seriously. Many pros who claim movement makes were just lazy from my perspective. They never actually learned enough to have a valid opinion.

I feel like in the future having serious movement skills like Monesy will become extremely important and potentially even something that pros might practice daily like they do aim. It'll become part of the skill ceiling getting higher, just as improved util usage has. It's just a question of when it starts taking effect. Can't wait for the "top 10 ways to get out of silver: Number 1. Do your 1000 bots on aimbotz each day. Number 2. Do your 1000 bunnyhops a day" 😂

Astralis changed the tactical aspect and nade usage. Before Them people were just to lazy and playing like mix teams at highest levels. Just sad the players never were that skilled mechanically and better teams eventually caught up, and combined good aiming with nades aswell.

Nowadays, if you're grinding MM or faceit, you'll hit a hard wall where it doesn't matter how cracked your aim is, if you didn't know basic smokes, flashes, or mollies, you weren't going to rank up.

Valve are great at bringing the HYPE back, even if it takes a long time..... if they fix the ranking system, servers and a reliable anticheat, AND introduce everything ESEA and Faceit got, well they could gather EVERYONE in one place. Nothing would make me happier, and maybe catching 99% of cheaters would do the trick alone? Hopefully they cooperate with AnyBrain Ai Anticheat to really catch'em all!
