Being in Seattle makes it difficult to get to our first choice(Boquete), so a direct flight sounds really good right now! Thanks for a great video Marianna. I have chosen SMA, at least to begin my journey. What I will miss is the water, but I can't handle the humidity on the coast of mainland Mexico and the Baja is too far removed from Mexico for what I want. What I find disheartening when people talk about Chapala is yes, it's beautiful from a distance, but when you start talking to locals, you learn the lake is filthy - polluted with all kinds of waste. Nobody tells you that up front....

@devonhuning756 - You wrote my sentiments exactly! I found Lake Chapala too toxic as well, with the horrible smell making it impossible to just enjoy walking on the Malecón, and I left after a month. I'm now in SMA because the coastal humidity made the heat unbearable for me. SMA is fabulous, but, boy do I miss seeing the ocean! Last year, from May through October, I tried Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Bucerias, Sayulita, Lo De Marco, and Mazatlán... five months out of the year was too long to deal with insufferable heat and I didn't want to spend my days inside an air-conditioned apartment, but that's me, personally. I was surprised to find that most shops and restaurants didn't have a/c. Let me know if you'd like to get together to chat over coffee one day. Geek and Coffee is a lovely place to hang out (at the end of the parking lot for Fábrica Aurora).

Congrats! This is one of the best 10 best places to live i've seen about Mexico. Now, as a Mexican, I can't help worrying about a foreign invasion. Although Mexicans in general are mostly welcoming and respectful of foreigners, I worry about the effect your video might have on the kind of people who may be attracted to Mexico only for the weather, but not the culture, history or present world standings. Anyway, I'm surprised that Queretaro, my hometown, didn't make your top ten, since it is the perfect halfway point, literally, between the small town atmosphere of SMA and Mexico City. Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Campeche, Morelia, Aguascalientes ... there are so many other places that could have been included. You did a great job, however, considering the multitude of choices.

I was recently in veracruz and really enjoyed it. Had the advantage of being taken around by my husband's cousin who is a local. Housing seems very affordable. We are considering moving there. They don't seem to have a lot of expats which is fine by me. Is there a reason? The areas i was in were nice and seemed safe. How would you describe or rank veracruz..areas of boca del rio, puerto de veracruz and xalapa and coatepec? I know there are areas that are not as safe but seems like enough nice parts to consider. Interested to hear your thoughts. Thank you! I enjoy your videos and information!

you should be VERY WORRIED. I'm living in Oaxaca City. The lack of water feels dystopian, a harbinger of nightmarish things to come. While I LOVE the city of Oaxaca, the deeply complicated water situation can be stressful if not hellish. The city is growing exponentially but the infrastructure cannot handle the out of control but encouraged growth. My feeling is that greedy and corrupt politicians and business people have sold this gorgeous city down the river, if only there WERE a river. If you're thinking about living in Oaxaca, either visit here first to see for yourself what I'm writing about, or seek another location. Given d national water crises bordering on catastrophic it's quite shocking to me that the selling of Mexico continues without consciousness around the issue of climate change. As much as I LOVE Oaxaca, the current situation is alarming enough that I am absolutely organizing a relocation out of Mexico. Unfortunately, this particular site NEVER mentions these compromising realities. I find that to be objectionable as well as irresponsible.

Most of the Americans in Mexico are children born to Mexicans who immigrated to the US, and then moved back to Mexico. The percentage of retirees and digital nomads is much smaller, and both spend a lot of US earned dollars in Mexico. Mexico isn't even in the top 10 for digital nomads, and yet they still spend 523 million dollar per year in Mexico City alone. Half of all digital nomads are in the US, Thailand is second, and Spain is third, There is a big difference both in numbers and in the type of immigrants going to the US and Mexico.

I am currently in San Miguel de Allende visiting. Every single day so far, I’ve seen at least one (younger/millennial) black person everywhere I went just living and minding their business which was so cool to see. Of course we were always pumped to wave at each other lol. Don’t underestimate San Miguel tho. There are a decent amount of foreigners, but u need to know a good amount of Spanish or u will struggle. Some locals speak a little English, but not as fluent as you would be lead to believe. Also, it’s not cheap here. Prices are on par with the US for most things. There’s a good deal of older white foreigners (mix of Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc). They are extremely rude and nasty to Mexicans and black people. They are a non-factor in my opinion, although this seems to bother a lot of ppl. I met a Mexican-American family here visiting from Dallas and they were completely outraged by this, and I had just experienced it too. I thought it was funny. No one old and shriveled up with one foot in the grave not even in their own country can bother me that much 🤷🏽‍♀️ But overall San Miguel is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. It has a beautiful, romantic, vibe. There’s always celebrations, people dance in the street, everyone walks most places. It is deserving of the top spot in my opinion.

San Miguel de Allende is definitely not an accessible town and is actually known as a place where seniors, especially women, get twisted ankles. The elevation is significant and there are many steep cobblestone streets. That said, the footage shown in this video does not do SMA justice --- it is far far more gorgeous than what is shown. Pictures cannot capture the magical beauty of this place.

I am currently in San Miguel. It is indeed hilly and all the streets are cobblestone. Somehow the seniors make it work because there are a lot of them here. And I agree with you, pictures and videos can’t do the beauty justice. I went to a restaurant with a jaw-dropping view of mountains and homes in the mountains. It was amazing! I took a video and several pictures of the view and it didn’t look anywhere NEAR as good as it looked in person.
