Agree with you. However, the real problem was that when it was released in the USA in theaters at the time, it was heavily cut, even the ending is changed. I remember that for use you saw a better version on television than at the theaters, this all the way up to the 1980's. Only in the 1980's, did people in the USA get to see the film in its more complete version. Of course, the music by Enio Morricone, there was no excuse by any of the nominators to exclude that. Far better score than what he finally won for with HATEFUL 8.

@@petergraham8681 I love John Ford’s work, but I must admit the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. No single film delivers without some flaw or disappointment, yet there are exquisite moments and passages that deeply satisfy one’s desire for a beautiful picture or a soaring sentiment. I think of film makers as composers. They work with themes and motifs which can be wonderful individually but sometimes incompatible in a composition. Ford’s direction was both elegant and gauche.

Know who hated Clint Eastwood movies in particular and Italian westerns in general? John Wayne. Said they weren't real westerns.

I have ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE SWEST as my 5th greatest movie of all time. One of the problems at the time was when released in teh USA some 20 minutes or so was cut fom the film. Including the ending. Despite this, it could have at least goten nominated for best music. Same thinkg with GOOD TEH BAD AND THE UGLY. IT WAS CUT SOMEWHAT ALSO, BUT THAT DID NOT HURT THE FILM IN THE USA. Also many critics at the time dismissed the films of the Italian westerns as trash. the irony should not be lost taht JOHN FORD won 4 academy awards as best director, with one of those films being best picture, when it should not have been. But his westerns never won.

When Mattie Ross crosses the river to catch up with Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. That's no stunt double. Hailee Steinfeld swam with her horse across that river. True Grit indeed.

Once Upon a Time in the West is the greatest western ever and should’ve won best picture. The greatest John Ford westerns, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Searchers both also should’ve won. The Outlaw Josie Wales should’ve won in most years but would’ve been up against One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Jaws.

The Searchers was the movie where John Wayne showed the critics were dead wrong, by proving he could act. But he had to wait until (the original) True Grit for his Oscar. Well, at least he finally got one.

John Wayne had the same problem as Cary Grant. He almost always played a version of the same character. It’s entertaining but not as impressive when you have seen it before.

I think it's Wayne fault. He's outshined by Dean Martin and that was not supposed to happen. He even complained to Howard Hawks. That would never ever have happened to Cooper.

How Shane is not here is unforgivable. But did get best cinematography. John Ford’s “The Man who Shot Liberty Valence” should be here too. Outstanding performance by Lee Marvin. It did win best costumes. And “High Noon”? Well …Gary Cooper won the Oscar for best actor.

He's absolutely right. The academy for motion pictures consists of actors, producers, and directors. They are overwhelmingly liberal. They hate genre pictures. According to them we already know how a genre picture is going to end. So why even bother to ses it ? By genre picture I mean the gangster film, the Western, and others. They love message movies where there's a liberal and uplifting theme about ending racism and ending violence.

What is it about the Oscars that you people do not understand? There is no robbing. Each year the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences holds a huge party and gives gifts to some of its members. Many corporations do this. The difference between the Academy and those other corporations is that with the Academy Awards, every member gets to vote.
