@@TheSwollenOne Me too man, great mentality. Today I tried surfing for the first time. Like on a beach. Every day is a chance to grow. Got any thoughts on vocal delivery for artists? Much different than mixing, but producers likely think about things artists don't even know about. I've rhymed for a long time but never recorded until recently and as a result I never really thought about delivery.

Thank goodness somebody is out here who finally says the TRUTH about EQing vocals. Thanks for spreading the good word, I mean dang, it's like frequency sweeping with an extreme boost and low q bandwidth will make ANY frequency sound bad so you'll end up destorying the whole vocal! Glad to see you make an example of simple broad boosting. That's really all we need to do to get professional sounding vocals, and honestly this is what all the pros do. Great video!

I teach so many aspiring engineers that you should completely get rid of that sweeping method. They force themselves to isolate specific frequencies and turn down what “sounds bad”, not realizing that mostly all frequencies sound “bad” when you do that. Only take away what’s distracting you from the musical elements of the vocal. I tell them often to do this in context of the instrumental because you could take away key frequencies in a vocal for the specific key or style you’re in. They gotta learn how to hear frequencies and discern what’s good or bad in different situations.

Big fact spoken on Compression! That's a very big problem with street producers! It's crazy! And I will end by saying, if you wanna be a producer / sound engineer, make sure you have knowledge with music itself 1st, then be aware of the different tools you use and how they were supposed to be used. Killing the sound first, then trying to revive it later! It's non-sense. A few effects are needed for vocals: gate, eq, compressor, autotune, reverb, delay and de-esser. The rest are useless! Use them knowing what you wanna achieve musically! Music has some universal rules that must be followed. Your creativity is allowed but within the rules. Thanks, brother, for educating this home studio so-called producers

I’m a fan of both styles of mixing depending on the context. For example blonde by frank ocean apparently used no compression on the vocals. I’m sure they automated and saturated them though, if I had to guess. My only push back about your info about heavy compression is the energy you lose in dynamics you gain back in other departments like loudness, compression artifacts, and distortion that create an in your face character. On top of the consistency you mentioned. You def coulda turned the compressed vox up to match the uncompressed vox peak volume and the compressed vocal would’ve felt like it had more energy. Either way I get what you mean though it’s definitely a less “real” sound. Great video, thank you!
@TheSwollenOne
@TheSwollenOne Ай бұрын
I'm not opposed to either style. I'm just sharing this information so people know what they are doing and have a why attached to it. I like songs with heavy vocal compression and songs with out. But the why and the intent is what's most concerning to me. An over compressed vocal is a cool sound for sure. It's appropriate for certain situations. Just not all. I can compress a vocal turn it up and it'll feel like it has more energy. I could level it out with automation turn it up and make it feel like it has even more energy. I can add a little parallel to it and make it feel like there is even more energy than that. There are many different ways to get an in your face character. Or increase the energy. I'm sharing this so people are aware of the trade offs.

Please make the static mix for everyone to understand how much more interesting a dynamic mix is over a bricked waveform mix. @@TheSwollenOne That's the complete truth. One thing I figured out while watching your videos and others is that the vocals which are mixed are already sounding great. Relatively balanced no crazy resonance from poor setup not too much of a dynamic range. So my approach is I use vocal rider, then EQ all the tones due to poor set up out of the vocal and then compress very light 1-2 db as if it was tracking. Multi compressors aren't the worst, it's just all about purpose. I have 3 max, but all different (a light glue RComp, then multiband for tonal control, and rvox for presence). Then again I mix mainly trap songs where dynamic vocals aren't as important as present and compressed sounding vocals
@TheSwollenOne

As long as people understand their intention that's what's most important to me. But we are strangely putting everything in a box when we have the opportunity to do anything. Saying dynamic vocals aren't important in trap music is limiting. What if we decided to do something different maybe that would be cool for some trap songs. Maybe it would lead to new style in the genre. Let's be trendsetters and trailblazers!

I get what you're saying about compression and i even agree with you to a certain extent ... I just feel like a professional sounding mix/mastered song is not meant to sound as you said, "natural" .. like 2 people having a real life conversation .. i think that would be more fitting for like a movie or something .. but when it comes to most records that we all grew up listening to, most of those vocals sound either squashed or perfectly balanced .. there's not really much "dynamic range" in professionally mixed vocals like most engineers on KZbin rave about .. doesn't really matter to me tho .. if it sounds good, i'm all for it lol

I feel like the beginning of this was nice and informative. The end, however, i would not agree with, just on standards alone. If youre making melodic super dynamic in volume instrumental and all, then yes, he's correct. If you're making any current pop hiphop rock or rnb music i need to hear that vocal at the same volume all the time. But songs like one time by marian hill is a good example of what hes talking abt so there's exceptions

Let's take music out of a box. Just because it's current pop, hip hop, rock, or R&B doesn't mean it has to be a specific way. We are making art. Leave room for innovation and open mindedness. @@SOULSEEKERBEATS I talk about this in the video but I have learned people don't watch entire KZbin Videos. Which is why the title is what it is. Because people have to be enticed to click on it. Which is why another reason why it's difficult to actually learn how to engineer on KZbin. Things that would be helpful to learn are not enticing to click on or are not what someone would even know to search. I'm am working on the balance to change this in hope of helping. But I am still getting better at it.

all in all, know your compressors and tools and train/use your ears subjectively for the results you want. every vocal mixing tutorial you'll ever watch is someone's way of achieving something but just know your tools and don't overcomplicate. treat each plugin on the channel like a physical rack unit and limit yourself to a few good processors, and add or change the chain as needed, and be able to justify the reason for each plugin you're using. you don't have to put everything you own on one channel haha

Some compressors are fast & slow, reacting differently to each other depends on the use but it's needed sometimes, especially with rap when dynamics aren't always wanted, fattening hooks at an even level for example

i always hear people saying that you shouldn't let your vocal go over a certain db with compression but you said in your other video that you should let your vocal have some expression by not slamming compression on it. so which one should i lean on?
@TheSwollenOne
@TheSwollenOne Ай бұрын
I don't want to tell people what they should or shouldn't do. I just want people to know what they are doing and why. I want people to be aware of the side effects caused by what they are doing. There are situations where slamming a vocal with compression is appropriate and situations where it is not. That's where experience and expertise come in. I recommend learning, studying, and practicing the art form so you have a better approach to more situations. Sorry for this answer if it is not helpful now. But if you keep going I think it will be helpful in the future.

Hi quick question. Is it possible to take the audio signature of one clip(movie, radio, soundbite, etc.) and match your own to it. So for instance lets say you wanted to copy a certain scene from a movie, but you didnt know how to make it sound like the movie(because youre not rich), could you somehow look at the audio waveform of that clip and try to match yours to it somehow.
@TheSwollenOne
@TheSwollenOne Ай бұрын
Maybe try SmartEQ. They have a pretty good EQ Match function. Or AI 😅. Or someones ears and experience if they can replicate it. I'm not sure complex the audio is though.
