I miss my OB. I’m certainly going to add another one at some point. An OB with red, yellow blue is pretty striking. I recently picked up a “strawberry” that is a beautiful hybrid. Thanks for posting Paul, love that Phoenix!

Hybrids are not the issue , the issue is mixing up hybrids as pure strain aslong as they are kept well seperate then you have pet fish thats what hybrids are , and the strains are protected , thats all nice fish

I think the Lake Tanganyika Community is far less accepting of hybrids. I recently came across a group of black widow frontosa, a color/ pattern created by inbreeding, and immediately fell in love with them. If I had a large enough Tank I would pick up the entire group. After reading some forums to learn more about these incredible fish I quickly learned the Lake Tanganyika community dislikes these fish. It’s amazing how some fish are adored whenever a hybrid inbred, or selective line forms a new mutation, pattern or color. Take the discus, guppies, and shrimp. I’m with you, for each their own.
@inventoryking6 жыл бұрын
Interesting info. Thanks for sharing it. I appreciate it.
@imnozcR6 жыл бұрын
A lot of frontosa owners dislike any alterations on a frontosa, they also don't like them to be kept in a tank with other species. Only species they like are tanganyika fish, but don't combine any frontosa's. The majority wants either WC or F1, no generations after that.

Hybrids, color mutations, & line bred cichlids are all deemed "Aquarium strain fish" because they're bred specifically for enhanced colors, patterns & shapes for the fishkeeping hobby. There's nothing wrong with them as long as people aren't selling them for other than what they are. "Wild caught species" & "farm raised F1, F2 & F3 fish" can be really beautiful fish as well. I've kept them all. It's important to know what you have or don't have so you can effectively manage your livestock & pass on the info. to the next owner or buyer. IMHO it's part of the fun of it!

Why colors disappear after a period of purchase
@inventoryking6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for commenting. It depends in my opinion. If they fish was colorful and was adding to a fish tank with established dominate fish they new one can lose color due to fish hierarchy. The other can be that the fish was juiced meaning feed steroids that makes the colors bright and when they go into a tank with normal food the color goes away. I hope that makes sense.

Question .. Can I have 15 demasoni and 15 yellow labs 2 to 3 inches sized in a 45 gallon tank? And no I'm not planning on upgrading ..that'll be their home for life ... Is the stocking too much or is it okay .. I have a sun sun 303b pushing 370 gph so I guess that's decent filteration. Pls let me know, some help with the stocking would be much appreciated @ inventoryking Thanks 😄
@inventoryking6 жыл бұрын
With African Cichlids bring big waste producers I wouldn't go with that much. I would say closer to 20. I have a 55 gallon back in the day and I had around 20-25. So maybe that can help. I also had 2 filters. Add another canister would be my advise.
@ThegoatedD6 жыл бұрын
inventoryking thank you for taking the time off and replying 😄 I think I'll get another hob maybe an aquaclear70 cause I'm under a budget .. and I'll get maybe 20 demasoni prolly go for a species specific tank .. Anyway thanks for the help ... Wil let you know how it's going 😄

Hybrids in a controlled environment can be great, however there are far too many unknowledgeable weekend hobbyists that will let fish just breed within a mixed community tank that often end up dumping what I would call “MUD CICHLIDS” into the environment without any concept of maintaining some type of integrity in what you are breeding. These types of hybrids usually end up being very sub par quality and actually hurt the hobby overall. I can’t even begin to count the times I’ve heard hobbyists say I’ll just dump these into my tank and let nature take its course, then they go sell these muddy grey hybrids to a local fish store and the damage is done. When you throw a couple of female mbuna into a tank containing various males you are going to end up with fry and unless you are controlling their activity you won’t know what you have. As a public service to all hobbyists it is probably very important to make it clear to the average hobbyists that these are not acceptable in any form. If you are going to try breeding hybrids you should be aware of what you are trying to achieve. Don’t just breed anything for the sake of breeding fish please choose wisely and be in control of that particular situation. On a side note any reputable fish store should be turning away these types of hybrid fish away !

Awesome looking fish. The only caution I have about the idea of hybrids is IF someone is chasing a particular look or pattern in a breeding group and just starts culling fish like crazy. Hybrids should just be like happy accidents or you should be okay with whatever appearance results in a brood. The thought of some sort of Frankenstein breeder trying for say a seven-striped fish and culling all the fish with the wrong number of stripes just seems sad. I'm not saying anyone in the aquarium hobby does that but it has happened with other pets historically.
