I have an Arc'teryx insulated Gore-tex XCR jacket that I bought in 2005 or 2006 (it's so old that it doesn't even have the model name in it). I've used it pretty hard every year since, but taken care of it, and it's never let me down. Last winter (2022), I was attacked by a dog who grabbed my arm in it's teeth before the owner pulled it away, and the jacket barely had a mark on it. It's like armour! I'm getting up there in age, and it may just last as long as I have left, lol. Arc'teryx is expensive, but damn does it ever do the job, and it'll last for years if taken care of.

I ride my bike to and from work in winter. A base layer, a thick hoodie, and a basic arcteryx shell over the hoodie is all I use and it’s amazing. It’s insanely wind and water proof. I do wear head gear like a face mask and beanie and cycling gloves but that shell jacket is the key to being able to ride in freezing cold.

Just stumbled upon your channel. Used and abused several Arc shells: Alpha SV, Beta SV, Fission SV, Theta SVX during my adventures and travels over the years. Their gear tends to be on the minimalist side features-wise for my needs. But there’s no denying their evidently thoughtful design and the quality of their construction. The Theta SVX is still going strong after 8 years plus and rivals the ME Changabang as my favourite and probably the best hardshell all round imho. Compliments on this instructive review. Nicely done

The thing that destroys the membrane of the goretex are the oils of your skin not the washing. If you regularly wash the jacket (once/twice a year) it will be fine for almost ever. Just use the special washingpowder and put it in the dryer. Thisisantwon has a great video explaining how to do it.

I highly disagreed on washing anything of high-quality and expensive material. Every time you wash something you destroy 5 to 10% of its quality. I have wool sweaters that I haven’t washed after wearing it for six months 24 seven every day and they are fine. I have a lot of fur items and I’ve never washed them in years and they are like new. I went about 9 months before washing my silk bed sheets.

Glad Arc'teryx covered both your jackets with minimal cost. I read many Reddit posts of people who were offered 40% to purchase new jackets after their Arc'teryx jackets delaminated after a few years. Fortunately when my Theta AR delaminated after 3 years, Arc'teryx sent me a Beta AR which I love (I do miss the left upper arm pocket though). Also glad to know TNF Futurelight products don't protect you from rain as well as GTX (I guess its the trade off for breathability). Keep up the great videos mate

It seems they fit you perfectly. My North Face jacket started falling apart (delaminating) after 10 years of use so I can't really say it was a bad jacket but on the other hand, warranty in the States is so much better than in Europe. I'm genuinely interested in Arc’teryx but can't justify spending so much on a jacket.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
That is interesting, TNF warranty in North America is really good. I was not aware that the same level of post purchase support didn’t extend to other markets. That is unfortunate if it is true. I had a issue with a pair of TNF gloves and happened to walk past a TNF store in NYC they exchanged them right there on the spot no receipt no questions asked. So I do feel TNF is a great brand but ARC’TERYX fit my usage and lifestyle a little better.
@shooterchef
@shooterchef 2 жыл бұрын
You're lucky if you get any warranty claim on either North Face or Arc'teryx after 2 years in Norway. They say there's a full 5 years right to "complain" if something that isnt considered a wearable item stops working/ gets broken (except user error) . But this a cacadoodle trickery. My brother spent more than a thousand dollars on a jacket and pants for randonee skiing. His pants ripped after less than a year and Arc'teryx was only willing to repair if he paid it. Then cautioning him that the warranty would be cancelled if he took the pants to another shop for repairs. So he'll go back to Fjällräven when buying the next set. They fix all garments for free for up to a decade.

If you got an Arc'Teryx jacket you are one lucky guy. Everything on their website is sold out. I signed up for their early bird release email (alerted each Thursday) and honestly 99% of the time when I got to the website, everything was gone. I actually called and spoke to a rep and was told they were aware a lot of their products were being purchased and resold but there was nothing they could do. Amazed how much Arc'Teryx stuff with tags is for sale with impressive markup prices. You're right on point when you say they have a great product but you have to be lucky and have deep pockets.

There is something they can do. Porsche had this problem. Investors were snapping up their limited edition models, and reselling. You know what happens now? they search sites looking for car sales, and if they find you reselling a limited edition for more than you paid, they mark you as an investor, and ban you. Porsche said they are not in the business of lining the roof with gold for investors, they are in the business of making cars for people who want to drive. I have mixed feeling about arcteryx. My beta ar has held up fairly well, excellent outer shell. The atom LTs are awesome. I have had problems with their lighter weight shells. I’ve found that they stain easily and oil stains are impossible to remove, that jacket is olive. I also purchased on of there walk around shells and went in to my brothers shed wearing it and accidentally got a nail hole in the sleeve. Had to pay to send it in for repair, first red flag, i thought they would replace to sleeve instead they did a patch that is clearly visible and annoying on an orange shell. For what I paid for the jackets it wasn’t worth it. They are extremely delicate and you’ll be pissed when you spend $400 for shells with permanent stains or patches doing normal everyday tasks.
@MobileAura
@MobileAura 2 жыл бұрын
Well when you are only spending $400 for a jacket what do you expect? This is why I always buy their highest end stuff and I always buy the highest end everything in life because if you buy low or middle end you are just screwing yourself in the long run and burning your money. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever buy middle of the barrel anything from any company always buy the highest quality flag ship model. If you’re buying a phone always buy the most expensive model.

Thanks for the comment, I’ve seen mixed post purchase reviews on the ARC’TERYX website with different items. I am not sure what variables are taking into consideration with these things. I wish I had a better answer, but I have no contact or affiliation with ARC’TERYX to give you a definitive answer. Fortunately or unfortunately I’m just a dude that purchased a jacket and made a review about it.

I have had a rather different experience with the Arcteryx Beta AR. Had two of them (one was a replacement for the second) and on both occasions they started to delaminate after a few years of moderate use. Considering how "bomb-proof" these jackes have been known for, alas it was a bit of a flop for me. For comparison I had a Marmot with Goretex Paclite far longer than these Beta AR and it is still performing as advertised. On a more positive note, my experience with the Arteryx brand was positive. They have stoof by their lifetime guarantee of the Beta AR and once again on both occasions had no issues with replacing the jackets and at no cost whatsoever. Mind you the price of the jacket has gone up exponentially since Gen 1 and they still honoured it.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Жыл бұрын
According to some blogs I’ve read, delaminating is the Achilles heel of these types of jackets. Mine took a decade but it eventually began to fall apart. ARCTERYX replaced it after 10 years of use but I would rather it not fall apart in the first place. So yeah I agree with you. I wish these items lasted a lifetime.

I have a atom LT and it’s perfect for low 70s and also warm up enough for low 40s
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
That really depends on a few factors, intended usage, environment, weather , your body’s comfort zone and intended activity levels while wearing the kit. I think of it like any other layering system. Base layer, mid layer ,extra insulation and shell. The Beta AR shell is going to have the least amount of warmth retention and you would always have something under it (at least a T shirt). So the shell would probably be comfortable for the average person in a temperature range from 80 ish down to the 60s. I have worn the Atom LT with a wool T shirt and been nice and cozy down to the 40s. The Atom Vest and LT ( either or with base layer) are what I use for winter running, cycling or hiking and I add the Beta AR for snow, wind, rain etc. If it’s really OMG cold (Freezing and below) . I do a base layer wool shirt, then the Atom vest with the Atom LT over it and the Beta AR over everything. Wearing that specific combination I have yet to be anywhere that I wasn’t comfortable enough for outdoor activity. Just for back ground, the original reason I got into ARC’TERYX was I learned to snowboard but I hated being cold. I get cold very easily, when I get cold I get nauseous and feel like I’m going to die. So I found what was considered back them the crème de la crème of outdoor gear.. ARC’TERYX and after all these years and adventures it has never let me down! Hopefully that answers your questions.

Temp is irrelevant with the gore as its just a shell, you could go up everest in that jkt, or cycle in a summer rain shower. Depends what's underneath. I use my atom for staggering around ski resorts after a night out with just a LS tee under it, 0 to -5. (is thats 30-40 in American?). As a belay jacket for ice climbing. Im skinny but its too hot for me to snowboard in, unless i'm somewhere crazy cold like finland or Japan.

Would the Atom LT be sufficient for North Carolina winters? It can get up to like 75 degrees+ in the afternoons and then be 25 at night. I work third shift so I’m mostly looking for a jacket to make me less miserable when it’s the latter but I’d like it to not be too heavy to wear when it’s in the 50-60s too. A friend at work recommended this to me. He’s got one and wears it throughout the night at work and and also hiking so it seems like it could work. I’m not concerned about price but if I can avoid shelling out $600 for the higher-end models I’m all for it. I had no idea any of these companies had warranties. I’ve got multiple TNF and Patagonia jackets in my closet that have a rip here and there so I don’t wear them anymore. I’m gonna have to look into that.

They are all designed to be used layered or separately. I would give this system a 8 out of 10, when it comes to fully layered comfort. The TNF jacket was a little more comfortable but lacked the versatility of the ARC’TERYX system. I literally always use some part of the ARC’TERYX system on a regular basis all year long. So it is a better value in my personal opinion/ use case.

Like I pointed out in the video, the yellow North Face jacket I had wet out very easily even when it was new. I tried several times to reapply DWR to it and it never had the level of water repellence I wanted. My old Beta AR never wet out in the 10+ years that I had it but it is made from GTX pro which one of the heavier GTX variants. I think that is the biggest problem with GTX most people think of it as one thing. The reality is there are a few different “weights” of GTX and they have similar but different properties. That’s just my experience.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
The other thing I also take into consideration is the face material on the jacket and how well it takes and keeps DWR. I’m not a textile engineer but from what I understand about GTX, once a garment wets out it can no logger “vent” water vapor from the inside outwards. I believe the issue with your garment and my TNF Dryzzel jacket was more so the facing material and then the GTX, but like I said I’m no Textile engineer so take my words with a grain of salt.
