I tow a 6000-pound maximum Airstream with a Jeep Grand Cherokee L V6 3-row filled with 4 adults and a dog. The Jeep has a maximum tow rating of 6200 pounds and 620 tongue capacity. It is nearly maxed out according to the specs for rear axle, GVWR, gross combined, tow, and tongue when I'm pulling a full load. Kind of wish I got the V8, but I'm not towing up the Ike. I generally don't tow up any mountain passes. Temps generally stay within 10 degrees of normal. So far so good. PS - I use a Curt Echo wireless brake controller, which has been OK.

I was visiting a friend once in western Massachusetts (which happened to be mountainous), and he was a little freaked out when I used the transmission to manually shift to lower gears to control the speed. He thought something broke because the RPM’s shot up so high. When I explained what I was doing, he was appalled and convinced I was destroying the truck, and thought that setting the cruise control and letting the truck decide what to do was much safer; this was despite him owning trucks his whole like. It was at that time that I realized that most people figured out how to drive trucks on their own, and don’t understand the basics of how to address situations if no one taught then how to do so. This is why it’s important to test a truck’s ability to safely control things without driver interaction; most of people beside you on the road don’t know what they are doing, and all the knowledge in the world won’t help you much when they lose control in front of you because they put too much trust in a truck that wasn’t designed to be used by an unskilled driver.

Ok I am going to just throw this complaint out there. They allowed an Infinity QX70 on this list after saying at the beginning that they would not include truck based suvs. They even acknowledged in this video that underneath it is basically a Nissan Titan. Not only that but they also compared it to an Atlas which is a cuv. The Atas was also towing its absolute max of 5000lbs. The QX70 towed the same 5000lbs even though it is capable of over 8000lbs. So even if we ignore the suv vs cuv issue it still isnt fair because one vehicle was towing max and the other was towing less than 65%. I bet you if they stuck 8000lbs on that thing it would have had 2 more brake applications and i also bet it would have gotten like 4mpg. The Atlas had 10 brake, and was slower, however, it was maxed out and had no special towing features. Even without those it was more efficient and while they were towing they noted how solid it felt even though it had no active anti sway or other features. In my book the Atlas won. Not saying it is a tow monster but to claim it is bad at towing I believe is missleading. Dont usually get mad at you guys but dang you messed up on this one.

But didn't they want to just illustrate that for the same job a bigger vehicle will always have some advantages? Like, if you tow this much regularly, maybe look for an Infinity, not an Atlas.

@@ldmtag yes but for this video they were talking about non truck based vehicles towing capability. The videos purpose comparing the Atlas and the Qx70 is irrelevant to the information being discussed in this video.

I owned 2 Durango SUV (old gen 2004 and the new one). I had a lot of towing troubles with the actual generation Durango (unibody) with the suspension (NivoMat). The dealer replaced it 2 times (rear) under warranty because shocks were "knocking" at the end of the camping season. The Durango nivomat's was unable to handle the tongue weight (10% of the 4500lbs trailer) and sag was horrible even 750 lbs W/distributon bars. Also, the Durango has a lot of hitch noises transferred in the cab that was quite concerning. After 3 seasons, changed it for RAM Rebel Pickup (that was less payload by the way!) and its perfect since then. I absolutely loved my Durango, but the suspension is just not up to the task for serious trailering.

Roman, if under 5k lb you can go up to capacity. From this channel i have learned a great deal abkut towing and have a viking 17BHS(dry weight 2895 lb) and tow it with a 2011 Toyota Sienna. Ininstalled a brake controller and use a weight distribution hitch and it controls it fine. I leave more space between the person in front on me while towing but am really not restricted with cornering or stabilty compared to without. But i get great comfprtable and reliable vehicle that has tons of space inexpensively and has great fuel economy when not towing, certainly better than most trucks. I really feel like i could step up in size of my travel trailer if needed, but it is the perfect size to accommodate my family and get us outdoors.

Every vehicle controls a trailer fine until it crashes and the driver must live with what they did to those that used to be their family. Best of luck out there.

Traded in my wrangler for a gladiator to tow a new 20’ bass boat. About 3000 lbs. gladiator towed terrible. Trailer was tail wagging at anything above 60 mph. Put trailer on full size truck and no problems. Tow weight rating is bs on short wheelbase vehicles

I believe tongue-weight is critical (not only for stability/handling but for safety as well) to towing w/o any fishtailing, no matter what vehicle is used for towing. I have a Gladiator (Rubi) and have towed a bit more than 3Klbs (between 3500, maybe 3750, but no more than 4K) and have had no issues. I don't have any complaints about how my Gladiator tows and it felt very stable and well-planted while doing it. And this was 3 different trips between 2 states (CO and TX). -- BR

I would love to hear your thoughts. To me, the Lexus GX is pretty much the best midsize truck that isn’t a midsize truck. Over 1500 lbs payload, plenty of power, with a 9000 pound towing maximum, towing 7500 or less pounds like the other midsize trucks would be easy, extremely off-road capable with the over trail, and better rear seat room. You’re really only losing a bed. Feels like a smash hit really

With these vehicles that have the ability to tow the manufacturers should offer or give you attachable extended mirrors, like you guys said the towing is not way up there on a priority list.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail is the best new Off Road SUV overall. If you can't afford you don't have to hate the facts. It has amazing towing capacity too

I think that towing more than 5k with a mid-sized SUV is really pushing it, for no other reason that wheel base and brake size constraints.

Great podcast. However, I really take exception to Roman’s statement that if you tow you should just buy truck. Sure, if you are a landscaper, farmer, etc that tows every day that makes sense. My guess is most people listening to this podcast tow occasionally and have zero need for a truck. Not everybody lives in wide open Colorado but may need to tow their small boat, utility trailer, etc. Buying a pickup truck doesn’t always make sense for their lifestyle or their geography. Generic statements don’t help.

I completely agree. These videos keep getting longer and longer with a lot of fluff chat. That’s not always a bad thing, but there are times when you are interested in the topic/results rather than trying to shift through an hour of babble. It would be the best of both worlds if you guys would add a list at the end or maybe even an executive summary for those that don’t have the time to watch the entire video.

Tow ratings aren’t for altitude. Tow ratings are usually for sea level. Derate the capacity for altitude. TFL overloads vehicles in some tests. If your number one priority is safety, you’ll stop overloading trailers. Once you’re overloaded, you’re on your own.

Cars can tow significantly more than their ratings. There is nothing dangerous or against the law as long as the trailer has brakes and the rear axle is not overloaded with 10% tongue weight.

Toyota has fallen. The new Landcruiser looks nice but is by far the worst of the past models. Not only is Toyota having a lot of mechanical issues globally, they are loosing market share to other manufactures who have been more consistent with their products. I'd take a bronco over a Landcruiser

The Bronco is way worse reliability wise though improving. Toyota is at the top of the reliability heap.
