To break the cycle we have to erase the effects of hundreds of years of slavery, terrorism that caused economic devastation, and laws and regulations created as attacks on POC. I'm not a professional or anything but it sounded a lot like he'd suffered a quite traumatic event and was looking for a framework to place that trauma in. As rational outsiders we can see that the violence done to him and his family was essentially random. But unfortunately for most people most of the time it's borderline impossible to turn that logic on events that happen to you or yours. He needed a narrative to latch onto, some framework that he would be able to look at and say this is why the bad thing happened. 'If I can fix X no more bad things will happen'. It'll be impossible to tear down that narrative and those like it in people's heads unless we can replace them with an equally compelling and believable narrative, which is hard because a lot of the answers the left has are complex (often because the problems are complex). None of this is meant to justify the racism at all just to try to understand it.

THAT is the kind of bullshit jingoism that you get from those people, "white americans are the most oppressed and if you protest your rights around us WE HAVE THE POWER TO GENOCIDE YOU." Like, jesus. We can talk all we want about trying to reach this kind of person but frankly I don't know how compromise works with somebody who says something like that. I don't know how much "reaching them" will accomplish. It really feels at that point more like all the "rational" arguments they have set up for their beliefs all just exist to shield that terrifying core from being detected by the light of day, y'know? I just don't know what to do with people like this. Even if we want to reach them it feels like an impossible fucking task.

He is a victim. He's been deliberately targeted by bad faith demagogues and their online hate campaigns to see his fellow man not as an ally against a greater oppressive system holding them both down but as the true oppressor who is blaming him for being white. When I hear him argue I hear someone doesn't want to be racist but the narrative he's been fed makes him feel like he's been given no choice. In his mind it's self defense.
