It's been just too rainy and cold to get outside to fill trays here - Sure wish I had a greenhouse! I may invest in one this year after I get settled in. For now, I'm concentrating on getting my tomatoes up. My seedling mats and lights are in my unheated laundry room, and keeping my soil temps high enough is a challenge. The rack is set up close to a south-facing window - great on a sunny day, but not so great at night when it's cold. I've insulated the window with a couple of old bed pillows and that's helping a lot. So far, I've gotten some pretty steady germination. The real surprise were the Invincible variety - Not only did they germinate two days ahead of the others, but I've gotten pretty close to 100% germination, even with my less than perfect set up.

I had a 100% germination with all the tomato seeds i ordered, i.e., Tachis, summerpicks, Sunsugar, Snapper and Black Krim. The jalapenos, cayenne and tabasco germ rates were almost as good so needless to say i have more plants now than i have space, so i am adding containers and placing them wherever i can add drip to them (also giving quite a few away to neighbors). I just upsized all of them into 18 0unce cups for tomatoes and 8 ounce for peppers and have been fertilizing every 10 days. I will be putting them into their home beds/containers in 8-10 days. Have you ever thought of investing into the vacuum seed planter. Not sure what it’s officially called but it’s a vacuum that you have different size plates that you spread the seed across. Then you flip it over and turn off the vacuum and it drops the seed down into the trays. It works well with the smaller seeds/smaller size trays. Can plant 150 seeds in a matter of 10 seconds accurately.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Those vacuum seeders are certainly nice! But we don't plant enough trays of a particular type of seed to make it worthwhile. If we were doing 10 or so trays of tomatoes, it would probably be worth it.

The snow storms hit me hard here south of Dallas (zone 8). The sub zero temps and Power and water out for 4+ days and my Indoor seedlings are really suffering. Got lights back on Yesterday. Unsure what to do next. Thinking I would step up the fish / kelp fertilizer. Should I increase the ratio and increase fertilizing times per week in hopes to get them to bounce back? They are not dead just suffering.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Fish fertilizer is likely not going to do much for seedlings. It takes a long time to be broken down into the small, inorganic forms that the plant cells need to absorb. Also, that breakdown usually requires some level of soil biology -- and seed starting mix doesn't have that biology because it's sterile.

How does one get involved with the wholesale garden seed market? I have noticed that several youtubers resell seed. How can I get set up to grow seed for companies like yours?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
While some companies may do that, we don't sell seeds that are grown by KZbinrs or home gardeners. All our seed is grown by certified seed producers for the highest quality seed and best germination rates.
@ZachSwena3 жыл бұрын
@@gardeningwithhoss I guess the question is how do I learn about how to become a certified seed producer? I have had good success saving various seeds for my own use in the past.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Maybe I used the word "certified" a little too loosely, whereas I actually meant "trusted." Not sure if there's an actual certification, besides having to be registered in the state you're selling. The best way to get started would be to have varieties that no one else has. If you're selling the same varieties as other seed growers/suppliers, you're probably not going to be able to compete with their price or volume. So you would need something unique to make it.

@@gardeningwithhoss Thanks for the clarification. That gives me enough info to figure out the right search terms to learn what I need to do to get in to this market though. You can't always assume people commenting are just home gardeners, as I don't know any home gardeners that farm over 3 acres and buy inputs by the ton and 30 ton truckload. I do have several varieties that I don't see available elsewhere, but I need to do some germination tests to make sure they are viable enough to sell.

Sounds good. If you're able to grow at least 10-50 lbs of seed for a unique variety, definitely let us know and we can talk.

are the Lola peppers a sweet or a hot banana pepper?

They are sweet. I want to add a hot banana variety, but wasn't able to get the one I wanted this spring. Maybe later this year we can add one.

Incoming vulgar-sounding comment: I bought some Capsicum Pubescens from Chilichump and their common name is...Turbo Pube! I grew them last year and they were slow to produce but had pretty purple flowers and fuzzy stems :)

It seems like the outer edge of you 162 cell trays are showing less vigor than the centers, why is that?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
It happens in a small greenhouse like this. The roll-up windows aren't completely sealed. So the cells closer to the sides of the greenhouse (where it's much cooler), tend to not always get up and going as well.

Dont buy anymore trays. Get you some different sized soil blockers and a masonry tub. Make your own soil mix (if you want) and you'll be baffled on why you havent been using them for years! If you dont know much about them, do some research.. you might find it's an option definitely worth considering ☕
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
We experimented with soil blocking about 5-6 years ago to compare it to our trays. Here were my thoughts: 1) It takes considerably longer to do soil blocks as opposed to planting in trays. 2) The soil blocks are much more delicate and require more "babying" than the cells in trays. 3) The idea that soil blocks have less transplant shock is a myth. We did a side by side comparison with plants grown in our 162 trays and saw no difference. 4) They are much more difficult to transport to the garden for planting. Our 162 trays last forever and never have to replaced. While I appreciate the art of soil block making and it is a neat process to watch, it's just so much more time consuming and there aren't enough, if any, benefits to outweigh that increased time commitment. But if it works for you, keep doing what you're doing! Thanks for watching.
