I was fortunate to own and fly a Piper Aerostar for 12 years. I purchased her as a 601B and then gave her the Machin upgrade to convert her to a Superstar 700. 240kts straight & level cruise at 12000ft, even faster higher up. She was an absolute delight to fly, To minimise the danger of single-engine failure on take-off I would not rotate until reaching 90kts. She was without question the Hangar Queen wherever I parked her. Ted Smith certainly designed the very best. Mid-wing -- perfect aerodynamics. I got my PPL in 1967. I became a little too old to fly and sadly sold her. I delight in the memories to this day.

What was the Machin upgrade? Was it larger engines? 240kts is pretty fast. I’m glad you enjoyed her!
@GlennThompson5 ай бұрын
@@Tubesmaney The standard 601B had twin turbo so-called normalisers that maintained effectively sea level power at higher altitudes. The Machin upgrade consisted of a few things but the performance came from low-compression engines with twin tuborchargers, intercooler, and larger props. At 18000ft she could get better than 280kts.
Maybe "Here are some random planes and some of them are fast" would be a better title? Because the list makes no sense.

Most of these aircraft mentioned have a VNE of around 200k KTS IAS down hill with the wind behind them. The business jets I flew had a VMO of 350 KTS or more. Nice video though, thank you.

Nearly matching the speed of the Piper Navajo? Give me a break. I have flown both of these aircraft. The Machen 700 Aerostar is so much faster than the Navajo. The 601P Aerostar in stock form with 290 HP engines is faster than the Navajo.

The ONLY one of these piston twins that CAN exceed 250 KTS is the Aerostar 700; good luck finding one, as Piper built fewer than 100 aircraft.

Yes, pressurized with a cruize capability to 30000 feet The Duke can cruise at 250 knots, with a long range cruise speed of 210 kt. The unique engines are the Lyc. TIO 541 with a rated power of 376 HP. etc .
@stevehicks89445 ай бұрын
TIO-541-E1A4 and TIO-541E1B6 engines are rated at 375hp. These engines are NOT known for their reliability or their low cost of operation. I have seen ONE SET actually achieve their 1600 hr TBO; all the others started “making metal” around 1100-1200 hours. Cruizing? Let me guess; English isn’t your first language? CRUISING…

None of these aircraft come even close to rivaling the performance of personal/privately owned jet aircraft. Making the title rather clickbaitish.
