Which city in the world has the biggest variety of tram models in the world? Here is a top 10 of those that I have visited.
This was a tough list to compile of cities that have a variety of different models of trams (places that I have been to)
Is there something in this list that is missing? Does one of the tram systems included in this video deserve to be higher? Lower on the list? Where have you been that has such a diverse tram system?
I love cities that have different models of trams - its a tram heaven for me!
Video clips in this video can date back all the way to 2011 and I did my best to include all the different model trams in each city, although some of them I have not visited in a while. Information comes from Wikipedia and a few other internet searches.
Let everyone know where one should visit to enjoy a variety of trams!

Most European cities have the box-shaped modern trams, but I always choose to ride the vintage trams because you can feel the wheels against the rails on slow turns. That orange and white tram in the rain in Budapest-classic shot. Thank you for this wonderful footage. ❤️

@Chris Ford - Personally, I don't. Considering for years before you could travel over three times the distance for a lot less than they charge for about a 4 mile run now. I hardly call a fleet of mid '30's trams "Heritage" plus a couple of 'earlier' ones that run only on fine days. All it is, is the usual "Blackpool Con" to get money out of the visitors.

@@keirapoppins2514 I don't think you quite get my point. It is the fact that they quite happily ran them the entire length of the route, (approx 11 miles) all day and every day of the year without calling them anything. Then closed the system at the end of November for "track-work" and also built a new depot for these 'new' modern things (which break down steadily), and are a damn sight more uncomfortable. Then after removal of the 'all-over' adverts, (which a lot carried), - why didn't they call them that then? - "Lovely Historic" would have been a good name. They put them back into "Blackpool livery", - and in order to get the money back from the "advert" ones, some "bright spark" came up with that name, - and immediately charged a ridiculous amount to go about 4 miles.

My favourite tram network is the Stagecoach Supertram which operates 3 Lines in Sheffield(Blue Route, Yellow Route and Purple Route). It is also the first network in the UK to have a Tram Train line. My 2nd favourite is the Manchester Metrolink which has the most lines in the UK composing of 6 Lines (Red, Yellow, Blue, Navy, Purple and Pink). We also have the Crich Tramway Museum in Derbyshire near to Matlock.

I agree. The title is cities with the most diverse rail systems and yet in SF the focus is on the vintage trams (and only the four types in the regular fleet, none of the “historics”). A true list of SF transit diversity would start with cable cars (three models) add the F standard fleet (4 models) add the historic fleet of international and domestic cars; then move on to the LRV system with its new Siemens and old Breda cars in operation; finishing with buses, now mostly New Fliers but with some tiny Orions in service as well and of course the NF broken down into 40’ and 60’ articulated with both diesel electric and fully electric trolley buses.

Third place for our city? Krakow is changing rolling stock COMPLETELY! Our newest tram rolling stock are Stadler Tangoes, which are locally designated as Stadler Lajkonik (named after livery, which has a legendary figure, lajkonik (a half-man and half-horse living creature)), are made of three sections and newer ones (2022 onwards) also have more wheelchair and pram (or buggy, depending on nation) spaces than older ones (2020-2022), and have exterior announcements (depicting the line number and destination). These trams are planned to replace the Konstal 105Na's and Lohner/SGP E-class trams (and C-class tram trailers, as former ones are used as motor cars, unless in Nowa Huta, where E-class ones are also running alone (especially on lines 16 and 21)) until June of the new year (when European Games will take place in the Lesser Poland, Subcarpathia and Upper Silesia, but the main consensus city is Kraków) or 2024.

Ok, for Hiroshima: Green Mover is an 800 type made by the Arnea-electrics, (the main Tram now used in Tokyo) as are the 3808 (slightly newer model)... they also make good cash registers & the like 905 (all green or all dark brown) is an Osaka Tramways construction Bureau made 900-Type, or much less likely a Fuji-electrics 750type made in 1940, amazingly, these trams were restored immediately after "The Bomb" and are still running... the cream green and orange is an Anwei construction Bureau/guild made 1900-type, a 1957 model... The Green-Liner is a Toyo-Electric 3900 model ... two more here unfilmed older models of the Osaka Tramways construction Bureau , the 100 & the 300 type occasionally also still run the tracks.

You should spend some time in San Francisco before you finish with such an idiotic conclusion. The cable cars, with waits of over an hour in summer, their heavy loads, and $7. fare are indeed mostly used by tourists (but lots of us locals use them anyway, if not regularly) the F line trams though are very much used by locals, from those who work in the Wharf (when in the mornings the cars are 70% local riders) or those who work or have business somewhere between the Castro, downtown and the FiDi, who get off as tourists then fill the cars. The Milan trams in SF are now painted in all 3 of their original liveries from yellow white and black, to two tone green and the final all orange.

I really enjoyed watching this diverse group of diverse tram systems! I found particularly interesting the systems of Eastern Europe and Russia. I wonder who would win the diversity prize if one divided the number of models in a system by its total of route lengths (suitably normalized). Of course, one would have to have a clear definition of what constitutes a separate model (which would not include merely a different paint scheme--sorry San Francisco). Cheers from Wisconsin.

Perhaps the number of models divided by the number of units would be a better measure. In that case Hiroshima, or some other Japanese city would probably win because Japanese tram companies seem to purchase trams a few at a time, so they end up with a lot of models.

I think it’s cool, although I think it’s too expensive for implementation right now. Trolley buses are cleaner (unfortunately our governments are putting the battery cells buses which isn’t eco friendly as stated)

@@timosha21 how well suburban routes tie into a city’s rapid transit main artery or network, i.e. feeder buses, interurban heavy rail connections, main cross route transfer points, etc. Probably a lot of research involved so maybe it’s a “Big Ask” for just one video but it certainly would define the best transit networks. Maybe the origin of a new vid series 🤔

Most integrated tram system in the world exist only one. In town where live cca 430 000 people, where is also main train station, which is most frequent station with number of passenger trains in 24h. Small nice country in Europe. This city is also one of the best world city with quality of life(many many times on top). Absolutely great integrated whole transport system here(trams troleybuses, buses, monorails, s-bahn, boats, nahverkehr/fernverkehr). His airport have amazing connection with city(trams, lot of trains every hour), many buses lines. Name of city is ...... 😉

That particular PCC is originally from Minneapolis-St. Paul, then in service in Newark for many years before San Francisco purchased it (along with 10 or so others) in the early 2000s when Newark replaced them with modern vehicles. I don't believe SF has any PCCs that were actually in service in Toronto.

Here in Darmstadt there are 3 streetcar types used, the ST12 from the 80s (made by Waggon-Union/AEG, soon to be replaced by Stadler ST15), the ST13 (made in the 90s by LHB/ABB) and the ST14 (made in the 2000s by Bombardier/Alstom), while in Frankfurt there are only 2 types in service: the R-type (made by Düwag-Siemens in the 90s, soon to be replaced by newer Alstom Citadis cars) and the Bombardier Flexity type, made in the 2000s!

of the cities I have not been to... I would say Pyongyang would in it's way have the most diverse system, at least by clips on the internet, it seems they have an example of nearly every type the east block and PRC ever produces, (and I mean, since the 20s) including Tatra's, Volgograd makes, Belarusian "Minsks", Ukrainian USSR period Kiev and Kharkov produced models as well as even Romanian ones, more so, many were converted passenger to cargo and vice versa, both still being widely in use... over all this, you occasionally see a remaining Japanese or even US made tram, from the time of before NK came to be. if you take by the shear insanity of the diversity, this is, it seems, the Mad-max of trams
