In the midst of the UK's deepening social emergency, John Harris and John Domokos go in search of hope, touring England and Wales to meet the new breed of community activists dealing with mounting hunger, poverty, and loneliness, but who are also trying to push towards a better future.
All the groups covered in this video are part of Locality, one of two charities the Guardian is partnering with for its charity appeal.
Locality and Citzens Advice are at the heart of the voluntary response to rising poverty and hardship in some of the UK’s most deprived neighbourhoods. Their vital work delivers immediate crisis support and hope for the future.
Donations can be made online by credit card, debit card or PayPal, or by phone on 0151 284 1126

In the end British people has to realize that the ambitions far far outweigh the income of the nation, the sooner British people realize that a huge cut in public spending is needed the better. Same problems all over the western world. Public sector budgets are higher than tax income year after year, decade after decade, this insane overspending will sooner or later need to stop, that's when the REAL problems start. And no, higher taxes will not work as higher income salaries is seeing a tax rate of 75% already, when you include VAT, council tax, inheritance tax, road tax, CGT etc to income tax, so nothing more to gain unless people are literally taxed to death.

@@truxton1000 Yeah, let's rely on private companies for everything, it's working so well for healthcare in places like the states and even our own energy companies. Sure they report record profits while people are bankrupting themselves trying to stay alive, but they should've thought of that before they chose to be poor. Non domicile status lets many of the mega rich dodge that 75% rate you're assuming, meaning they pay at little as £30k a year regardless of total income.

So ditch all private schools for kids up to 16 years of age, privatize all energy companies and of course nearly everything to do with health. Also make it possible for normal people to buy cheap land they can actually build on, like it's done in many other countries where private people can build their own home without having to pay extortionate money to greedy and inefficient developers.

Maybe it's my math, but that last project doesn't add up. It cost 5m to build, but is only going to yeild 100,K per year for 25 years? At that rate it would have been more efficien to just give the 5m to the community
@100notnews7
@100notnews7 Жыл бұрын
Just about to say that! I thought they must have made a mistake but I checked on their website and it is indeed 5m outlay (actually a bit under) and then £100k per year revenue. Over 25 years they wouldn't even pay off the initial outlay. There must be more to it otherwise why not give the 5m to the community as you say.

I’m from Canada, and I know this may sound like a silly question. But where is the royal family in this?! Are they legally/politically allowed to take action on behalf of their people? Just wondering from a factual point of view. Clearly there is a need for intervention. I’m wondering what is stopping the royal family from taking action, when the government doesn’t seem to have a handle on things 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s a constitutional monarchy so the PM and in general Parliament has the most direct influence now. King Charles and the royals in general are figureheads and cannot engage in political activities because they have little to no power.

Boilers on wall, rads,working pipes, and people can't use it, wiring in the walls and ceiling yet light bulbs can't be turned on, tracks laid, and trains running yet cost a lot of money meaning people can't use then, and people moving from choosing what they want at a supermarket to queuing for a food bank hoping to get something.

In our daily working lives, if something repeatedly fails, you try to fix it by making changes, adjustments, re evaluate and use an iterative approach like Kolb's cycle, to 'seal in' improvements. Not so with capitalist economics. Why? because it works just fine for the few powerful people who benefit from it....
