The big red-headed woodpecker is having issues because of dying/dead tree removals. Now professionals usually only top off the tree and leave the rest-so there's something still to feed on and if it is the fall it won't cause any damage. Every once in awhile I'll see one, once I even saw a pair.

Sounds like those woodpeckers need to start a petition for "Save the Dead Trees!" Maybe they can hold a rally with some catchy beak-themed slogans!
