Internet debut of my original composition, "These Blues (Are All I've Got)", performed live on stream at Emmet's Place.
Until recently, I found myself so preoccupied with working as a sideman that I never felt mentally rested enough to compose something earnestly. However, an exception is created when stress or tragedy strikes so hard that I can kind of only think of resorting to the only place I can feel confidence in expressing myself. When thinking about the ultimate loneliness, pondering on what I can always count on no matter what I experience in my life, there seemed to be one area I could think of: the blues.
The blues have an infinite amount of colors within... and I think of the blues in every musical context possible. It's the most powerful and visceral expression I know. I don't think it's as much of a defined/specific sound as it is a general feeling that has a specific intent behind it. With that in mind, I find that I can combine every aspect of music that speaks to me and translate it through the blues. That leads me to believe that, above all else, these blues are really all I've got.
Thanks for watching. More to come from this session.
Patrick Bartley - Alto Sax
Julian Lee - Tenor Sax
Emmet Cohen - Piano
Yasushi Nakamura - Bass
Kyle Poole - Drums

In his notes above Mr. Bartley, the virtuoso on his instrument, indicates that it only is “when stress or tragedy strike so hard,” that he gains confidence to also compose. None of us want him to suffer - but one can only be grateful that he is capable of transforming agony into such great music.

Incredible composition brought to life with these killer cats! And dat alto tone, holy shit. I'm much more of a tenor sax fan, but my jaw dropped when Patrick played the first phrase. Really powerful stuff.

Pat is also the only performer I really enjoy on soprano sax. Normally, to my ear, it sounds like a kazoo but Pat just infuses it with such groove and feel. ‘Price’ from Metagroove is the track.

Mr. bartley is really an improvisation genius and a saxophone goat i have to say honestly. His sounds and musicality are so unique..❤ The only thing that man could criticize about his playing, if so possible that was, is sometimes the ending of his phrases. Sometimes, i feel that he is lacking some air and length in the end of certain phrases. But, really a perdonnal detail😅
