The fines for spreading LGBT propaganda are very high by any standard. Take into consideration the average income in Russia and it becomes even more costly.

That’s totally true. The same is for discrediting the military. For example banner with just one word “Peace” can be interpreted as a crime

More than censorship sounds like common sense

Well, there are still more cases in Europe where people have been arrested for opinions they shared online than in Russia. Not that it makes it OK for people to be arrested for their opinions in Russia, we just shouldn't be such hypocrites as to think that the oppression of the freedom of speech only happens in Russia, or that it is worse there.

Totally agree. In Russia after the collapse of the USSR we lived in the most liberal society and with the most free state of mind than ever. Last 8 years revealed a tendency of multiplication of restrictions. In official and unofficial forms. It’s gonna go deeper for sure. Hope not for very long.

Censorship in Russia pales in comparison to that existing in most western countries. Suppression of freedom of expression, which includes artistic liberty, should never be tolerated.

Yes, it’s true. Limitations of freedom of speech exist in many forms, the worst one in my opinion is self-censorship, that makes you a prisoner inside your head. That’s something we escaped from in Russia in the late 80s, but slowly come to right now. The pendulum of feeling of freedom is not in the good position for now.

Self censorship is good. It’s the last act of rebellion.

I mean self censorship in the way, when you know that something is not prohibited officially, but you think you will be punished for it anyway. For example, jokes about Putin are not officially banned in Russia, but you will not find a single stand up comedian, who will say it in public. That’s something that limits you from the inside, the first and the most choking layer of unfreedom (not sure if this word even exist).

propaganda is pronounced just like it is pronounced in russian btw. not prop-agenda
